When I was little we had neighbors with a great Dane, they also had a little girl my age and we became good friends. I'm 47 now and I still have vivid memories of us pigtailed 5 year Olds playing outside while Hermes watched over us. He had his own room in their house, lol. Most amazing, gentle creature. He was all black and looked pretty intimidating to everyone but us, he was the size of a horse in comparison to us half pints, I'll never forget him.

Great vid, always know the commitment you're taking on. I've had my dane for 3 years and thankfully havent had any issues with him. From my experience they need an hour of exercise minimun a day, once fully grown they need a lot of water omg they need so much water haha, but he doesn't jump on people. They are very scared of random things like a cell phone or a plastic bag will cause my dane to rocket out of the room at mach 3 for whatever reason. They will follow you everywhere you go, you want a glass of water? He's coming with you. You want to grab a take out the trash, hes gonna stand at the backdoor waiting for your ass to get back. Just be patient, gentle, and kind to your dane and they will be the most loving and relaxed dog you have ever had.

I grew up with German Shepherds, rotties, pit bulls and a cocker spaniel. I was always around dogs as a kid. My wife had never had a dog before. We decided one day on a Doberman, but when i took my wife’s sick cat to the vet 9 years ago one of the nurses was a Great Dane breeder. We took one of her pups home. Last night I watched the World Series with my Great Dane. This morning I went to go pet him and he was no longer there. Perhaps the biggest reason not to get a Dane is the amazing attachment you get with them. A unique breed to say the least, but they’ll love you with all of their heart right up to the very last moment.

Luckily I kept my old SUV strictly for my dogs to go to the vet and the dog parks . Danes must rest atleast 45 mins after eating prior to playing!! Also do your research prior to any breed!!

Thanks for the nice video! The information is good for beginners and will prevent that the Great Danes end up in shelters when they are two years old and difficult. I would like to add five more. That´s maybe more people-related points but it just happens more often with a GD. 6. A day in town with a Great Dane makes you feel like a moving "freakshow". People forget to behave and will try to pet, make "funny" and rude comments about you and your dogs size. If you dont answer or laugh at their joke, you are a bad person. You will attract lot of "Karens" with different issues. Sometimes sobbing lifestories or just plain meltdowns. I didnt had that with other dogs. The Great Danes often seems to be the triggger. 7. A small dog constantly barking and biting is cute, if your Great Dane bark ONE time, he is agressive and you are a bad person who should not have dogs. 8. If a dogfight occure in the park, your Great Dane is to blame because its the only dog people perseive. No matter if your dog is inocent. 9. People think that they can feed "everything-everywhere" to a Great Dane because of their size and because their "dog-back-in-the-days" did that. You will end up in lot of discussions with people about that. Some people get rally pissed off because you ruined THEIR joy to feed your dog. Even your own friends and family! 10. One of my Great Danes are getting older now, she cant sit in one place to do her buisness because of her bad hips. That means you must search a long pooptrail every time to pick it up. Also she cant wait too long, so you will need an open access to the garden and only carpets who will fit in your washingmachine. I´ve just started training a GD for work with a boy with ADHD+, so im searching for different aproaches to meet his special needs. He is in a program where we use animals instead of heavy medication. They are now bonding very well and the boy gets calmer. But the dog have his own resting places and private time. Otherways the dog would go nuts too. There ist lot of information about servicedogs, but with Great Danes, its different. Some things they do better, some things, they cant. I would be greatfull for videos and ideas on that topic. I´ve heard about Cortisol-training but i think that our Danes allready does mark it naturaly. They "nudge" me with the nose if i get weird or upset. The best help the dog gives, is to just exist and be a dog. He really dont need to do human-stuff.

I adore Danes and have had them for well over 35 years. We always have 1, usually have 2, and sometimes have 3. Our car and camper were purchased with them in mind. They need their space, and I am happy to give it to them. I just love them!!! Most of them have been rescued, or someone needing to rehome the Dane they weren't quite prepared for. Some have come from horrible situations and some from families with busy lives and busy children and the Dane lived in a crate, or a basement, or a garage. SAD! We have finally adopted a puppy after many years of adopting adults. She is a 90-pound tornado at 6 months and an absolute love. They truly aren't for everyone, but I can't imagine not having a velcro Dane at my side, ever.

Had a great dane for 4 months now. She is 6 months old. Full of energy a little bit stubborn, but she's super intelligent, she's amazing with my 3 kids 10,9,3. She bonded immediately with my 3 year old. She does chew on stuff. Food isn't expensive at the moment 40-60 bucks a bag every few weeks
@ArealMrsSmith

I have 2 Danes. He has the food quantities backwards. During the first 1-2 years while they are growing they can eat up to 14 cups a day during growth spurts, but once they are full-grown that reduces considerably- especially if they are kept indoors and are the “lazy” gentle giants they are known for being. So food costs go down. Our smaller female (120 lbs) eats 3.5 cups of dry food, while the 1 year old pup eats about 8 cups a day currently (at growth spurts we’ve been up to 12 cups), and she is expected to reach about 150 lbs and settle in at 4-6 cups a day as an adult. And the slobber isn’t so bad. Its mainly after they eat. We hung command hooks in discrete places and keep bar-mop towels on them in the places we are the most, and ours learned naturally pretty fast to come get their faces wiped after eating/drinking. The baby tolerates this, but the big girl demands it- she HATES he face being left wet or slobbery. All that said, cost is your biggest factor, and what is “expensive” is entirely relative to your resources. They are a million times cheaper than a kid, but you do need to be financially stable and responsible so you can handle any health emergency that may arise. I’d say the best advice I’d have for a first time great dane owner is- ADOPT AN ADULT dane. We are glad we did that with our first because baby Danes are are baby BEASTS. They have all the same puppy behaviors as any dog, but they have those while the same size as an average full-grown dog- or bigger. 1 year old and our pup is 100 lbs- and has no idea how big she is. She’s still a baby in her head and won’t be full-grown until she’s at least 2. Having a full grown one first let us learn the breed and know that come of her more challenging puppy “phases” are worth it, because she’ll be great when all grown up (with proper time and attention and training).

My 10 month old female is eating about 7.5 cups right now! She was eating up to 12 cups when she was around 7 to almost 9 months. At 9.5 months she started to eat a lot less, so we’ve adjusted her meal size with her. She’s an unusually big girl (about 135lbs) and the vet expected her to weigh in between 150-175lbs for her final weight. Not sure how much she was eating between 2-6 months because we free fed her then (no such thing an obese dane pup!). If I could guess, I would say starting at 5-6cups to 8-10cups.

Hello! I just came across your channel & I'm so glad I did! My 11 year old, male Dane, Sterling Archer (he's a beautiful mantle merle), is getting up there in age, & I am not nearly ready to let him go! I can't even bare to think about it! SO! I've been considering another Dane pup! But my life is much different than it was when Archer was a pup. I was dating my husband when we got him. I bought Archer for my husband. He was originally his dog. However, my husband passed away in 2017 when our son was 7 months old. So, now my son is 4 years old. I am a busy single mother & widow. Sterling Archer (we call him Archer) has been the best family member I could hope for, and I'm hoping to carry on the tradition with a new Dane pup member soon.. However, I do have some hesitation. We did puppy training with Archer when he was young. For the most part, I believe I am fully capable of training our new pup. BUT! Danes can be stubborn to train. My husband was stubborn also. I fear I may not have the wherewithal to properly train the best behaved Dane without some.. help. Any way you all would like to chat with me throughout this new adventure with me? I would be happy to upload some content for you, to help walk me through any processes or issues I'm having. I anticipate looking for a reputable breeder & hope to purchase a pup at the beginning of 2022. If not, do you have any recommendations for someone who might be up for the adventure? I can't tell you how happy I am with Archer. He's the best dog I could imagine. Literally part of our family and one of our closest friends. I am looking to purchase a male (red black or all black?) Dane & name him Bullet (as we are Pokes, Oklahoma State, fans!). Archer could have participated in agility competitions, had he been trained (I believe). He could jump 8 feet (his nose would tough the ceiling) in his prime! He really is the best dog in the world.

Something else that can happen is something to add on the medical bill stuff they could also get tumors on there hips which gets them more fragile, And we had to give my GD a shot for her to sadly pass away and it was about 1 grand for a paw and the shot which is very expensive like you said.

If that does not deter you then keep it on your list, for sure! Truly!! They are clowns, a bit needy/dependant, and a lot goofy! The risk of losing them too soon, and the cost of nurturing them (if you're emotionally and financially prepared) is far outweighed by the absolute love you will give and receive. All dogs are amazing but there is something special about the relationship, the affection and tender even the sounds a Dane makes. Their yawns could melt steel. Their paws stretching lazily just to know you're near, well, what more can I say? They are a bit more than dogs, they truly value you in a way that cannot be described. If you choose a Dane, please know, a puppy is still a puppy....but a VERY large one. They are babies who come into themselves in a very tender way. They want to be your everything, which can be challenging with work schedules, etc. Suppose what I'm trying to say is they're not simple in any way. Even the arrangement of your home may need to adjust. Still....well worth it If you are ready to have your world changed!

I had a Mitsubishi Mirage. Buddy fit nicely in the back seat. Fed raw, $62 every 10 days. His issues were chronic ear infections. And growing pains in his front legs, no dysplacia though. He did a partial bloat on this 6th birthday last August, we had to put him to sleep in December, his heart gave up 😢😭 204 lbs, over 3 foot at the whithers; he never jumped, nor did we encourage "shake" because of the size of the paws. Perfect exercise dog for us, 20-30 min walks, or even not some days. Drool ... yes, that IS a pain! Big bark, but that also kept unwanted solicitors away.

As an owner of a Great Dane, I couldn’t agree more. My Great Dane is very stubborn and lazy, one time I pet his stomach when he was sleeping and he launched up scared and accidentally hit my forehead, instill have a small dent in my head. There very good dogs but can be easily startled and accidentally hurt someone or break something
@hothotheat3000

That applies to any dog. There’s a reason why there’s a saying about “let sleeping dogs lie”. You shouldn’t be bothering sleeping animals. They don’t know that it’s you that’s touching them, and the first reaction is to defend themselves.

Serious question here.... when it comes to whay breed , with bigger vs smaller breeds the larger breed u always hear how expensive they can be, yet does anyone else feel strictly finically, small vs large lets say a breed tht lives 15-20 vs 5-12 for big breeds, the price essentaily is the same for the value of life compared, owning one breed for 18 years may cost the same as a big breed for 5-8 years, so to me if the connections is what matters most, the money i spend doesnt matter relating it to the life span, if that makes sense?

Price definitely varies by breeder and specific coat patterns, such as blue, brendel, black... specific traits raise price but here are some general average prices, keep in mind you tend to get what you pay for when it comes to any animals that being said you can usually find a standard black and white dane male for 800 to 1000, females tend to be a bit more at 950 to 1200, brown and black males (scooby do colors) tend to start at 1000 and up, 1200 to 1500 for females. When you get into the rarer colors is when the price starts to really go up fast European blue Danes start out at 2k and up and the prices can get really crazy depending on the bloodline of the animal you would be interested in. I suggest getting to know your breeder before you buy, see the animals and how they are kept, how they engage with you and other animals ask questions a lot, the more you know about your specific dogs traits the easier your go will be (allergies dogs have them too, ask about it, red eye a health risk to Danes that isn't covered as much as bloat or dysplasia, ask about it, any concerns at all do your due diligence) all this being said Danes are an excellent breed for most owners given enough excercises, good diet, training and socialization they make wonderful companions just be ready to share your home with essentially another adult human sized animal that will need their own personal space for feeding and sleeping... the size of your home isn't very important as Danes tend to be very social and want to be near you constantly, just be sure to give them plenty of exercise and a small space with a "quality dog bed!!" For periods of rest.

Agree with the other reply. Making food is often more expensive and less certain your dog is getting a balanced diet than a high quality food. High quality food, while it may be expensive, can help to prevent unnecessary medical issues and expenses down the road.

Our first Dane, Yasha, was 11 when he died...we had him put down - old age, joints... no quality of life. We then had Dino and Diana, a rescue, who had a cerebral incident when she was 6, and had to be put down. Dino, named after my Italian drycleaner! died of bloat 2 years ago, juat under 7 years old. We were so careful, followed all the rules. A week before he died (in our arms) I took him to the vet - who said there was nothing wrong with him., but he died of bloat nevertheless after a walk in the nature reserve. Apparently there's something called slow bloat - does anyone know anything about that? We are not over his loss, and I doubt we ever will be. After the Danes I could never have any other breed. Our hearts are broken and will remain so.

Then again, our girl is 80cm at the whithers, but only 50kgs. She's fussy about food and i'm lucky if I can get her to eat 3 cups a day. She's not underweight, so I just call her our budget Dane. She also fits easily into our Camry despite being above average height for a female Dane. Can't dispute the vet costs though, and we're always anxious about bloat.
