I’m so afraid somebody will steal my idea - a co-founder, a developer, an investor or somebody else is going to steal my idea.
In this video, we talk about ideas, probably the most overrated subject in Startups. This is one of the most requested videos, the comments on KZfaq are full of questions about this - so here it is.
We talk about what you can and should do and finally in the video we look at what you can do to protect your intellectual property legally. We look at Non-disclosure agreements (NDA), Patents, and Trademarks.

One of those days I feel like I can take a breather because this person really knows the mindset of a lone wolf, lone developer who is working on an app, and his contents are just damn amazing. Every single one of his contents are hitting me home, esp when I am just doing some pre-launch marketing stuff. But still, I gotta stop binging his great content and start working on my website content. Thank you sir, for all the great advice. If I could be your disciple, I would.

NOT how the world works? You said in the video, everyone steals from everyone. Trace the origins of Shark Tank, it's an idea a friend and I pitched to someone from Mark Burnett's production company. She told us they weren't interested and, a year later, my friend called to congratulate me on the show. I had no idea what he was talking when he said my show was on the discovery channel. Guess who was listed as a producer? Yep, the same woman we pitched the show to. It's morphed 3-4 times over different networks and is the same show as Shark Tank. It's happened 2 other times and, each time, someone "in the know" says not to worry about it.
@RawStartup

I can't your full story and sorry that you've had some bad experiences. I will say though that Shark Tank launched in 2009 so you must have pitched them in 2008. The original Shark Tank is Dragon's Den from the UK and it launched in 2001, 7 years before you spoke to them.

@@RawStartupThat's awfully presumptuous, to simply assume you know when we pitched based upon some random production date of another show. We pitched it in the mid 1990s and, as I said, it was at least 3 other shows in the US prior to resurfacing as Shark Tank in 09. I didn't mean to imply that SHARK TANK was my show but the first one, produced in the mid to late 90s, absolutely was and I believe the second show that resurfaced under another name at another network also had the same woman listed as a producer. Maybe research that while you're in such a hurry to prove that someone else had the idea first. Perhaps someone else did, but the producer who was involved in the first 2 iterations, did not.

Something like that also happened to someone close to me. Network producer and exec took a meeting, said they weren’t interested, 9 months later that exact show was on tv with another name. His advice on this channel is overall great but not for the entertainment business. It’s ugly, cutthroat, and everyone is out to secure the bag, legal coverage is an absolute must.

Actually to over-execute is the most honest what you can say about enjoying startup reality. Iterations/time is important indicator from our experience because pace is crucial for really innovative products. Even “eureka” ideas are just a base for whole product development journey with witch you will be able to create a competitive option for Users. Thanks for those words about “coming out”! I found them at the best possible moment in our project! Real and honest insiders sight is priceless and it’s more than fair that you share it 🙋🏻‍♂️💪

I'm a small insignificant Artist and have been working on a new collection for about a year and plugging it online since the beginning of April, yesterday I found out that 6 days ago a local gallery, that I have even had a show in, has taken my title and used it for a competition and invited every artist from the area to paint what my new collection is about for themselves both collections are due to be opening in September. I know many of the members at the gallery and we belong to the same on line art groups etc and I just don't know whether to try and out advertise and over shadow theire comp or confront them. I know I will come off as petty if I aproch them but stealing my idea was way more petty. I'm quite heart broken about the whole thing, months of work and money just trampled on by people I know, I don't do emotion but I really do feel like crying which is strange because I'd usually prefer to punch.

Will that suffice??🤔🤔 PS- can't afford patents, already got a trademark & i understand that ideas are not unique and am ready to risk it all, but i just wanna make sure everything is being done within legal framework

Dear Heini, congrats for your channel. I just subscribed and it's helping. In my case, it's a bit different. I'm bootstrapping and my two awesome ideas will go to market in about a month. I still have some budget for a little bit of marketing, but obviously not to bring them to their real potential. As the potential users of my 2 apps are practically every traveler in the world and practically every driver in the world. The potential is huge. And yes, I fear that my existing products will be copied as soon as they hit the market and become public. As you say, I need to make sure I out-execute my copiers. What would you do in my shoes? Thanks in advance.

I disagree with you here. We are not exposed to the same ideas at the same time. This is because everyone has their one unique perception of what they are experiencing. That perception is combined with the persons own life experiences and learnings and that is how they create their thoughts. 10 people could watch the same movie. 5 may think "I want to be a firefighter" 2 of them know fire fighter. 1 of them has read enough information to come up with a GOOD idea. Ideas are common just like execution is common. GOOD ideas and GOOD execution is not. You can't turn a pile of garbage into a spaceship no matter how many elons you have in the room who execute very very well because the idea is a bad idea. This is also why a fantastic idea doesn't need a rocket scientist to be able to execute it, while a bad idea needs someone exceptionally skilled to do so. Another example is a new driver can drive a self driving car (the car is the idea, the driver is the execution skill), but you need a very skilled driver to drive a bad car with lose handling.
@RawStartup
@RawStartup Жыл бұрын
I just think we disagree here, I believe great execution can turn a mediocre idea into something good and bad execution can't even make anything out of the best idea!

@@RawStartup this is my perspective: Terrible Idea + great execution = okay results Great idea + terrible execution = good or great results (the idea can sell itself if it's good enough) Terrible Idea + terrible execution = terrible results Great idea + great execution = great results Everyone can execute. Only some execute well. Everyone has ideas. Only some have good ones. Good execution on bad idea = big fish small pond. Good execution on great idea = big fish big pond. If you look at a lot of the various successful startups vs the ones that don't make it you see it's generally a great idea at the forefront. Even the best executor in the world needs a market for the product. When the idea is terrible then they have to pump more money to try to make it work. If there's no market the idea itself is terrible. 20 Elon's can't sell a pile of trash to people willingly. This is Also why it's hard for the best executors in the world to make lightning strike twice. You would think if it was purely the execution over the idea then the best executors in the world would never run out of work and consistently turn terrible ideas into unicorn companies. The idea itself is paramount first in my opinion otherwise there's nothing to execute on.

It's been really interesting watching your video's - lots of good stuff !!! - I actually do have a unique idea haha - I've owned my own ad agency on and off for 30 years however i have an amazing concept that i have not been able to tell anyone about, I have spent about a year on R&D went to many countries to test this business model and it's so successful I had to take video of people reactions as my case study - I've spent $250k from my agency developing air tight marketing strategy branding and everything ready to go to market. It's a B2B company not B2C hence reason I actually think i do need a NDA before telling anyone. I also need seed funding to purchase a business asset ( this asset also does not depreciate in value it actually has a growth rate YOY of 18% i currently read on Forbes economy. I'm also going to be launching in the fastest growing business sector growing 27% each year and it's still in it's infancy.Also this ties in to the 2nd fastest new industries Globally, with an audience watch of 300 million viewers every week I'm ready to go to market should i take a NDA but explain to them the industry sector - I'm sure as soon as they realise what area i'm in they will understand. What do you suggest ? Thank you in advance Graham
