From experience the distance doesn’t matter much as long as you have a strong posture to receive or block the strike and counter. A strong posture will prevent you from getting knocked out

I'm nearly a 100 pounds overweight and can't lift my legs high enough to kick above the ankles. and i get gassed out after the first kick. any tips for me?

Keep training and either drop weight by diet or get stronger with more training
