ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 29, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other topics I come across in my everyday life in the States. Went to Oktoberfest in 2017.. being from a village in Kentucky, naturally I went with a hillbilly twist.. “Denimhosen”.. lopped off the legs of a pair of denim overalls , flannel undershirt… it was better received than I anticipated.. great time!

Definitely a traditional garment is not some offensive Halloween costume. I’m mostly Scottish ancestry and I have a proper Scottish Kilt. It’s not a dress or some Halloween costume. Always be respectful when wearing a traditional garment of clothing that is a traditional garment of clothing to a region and nationality and ethnic tradition of a group of people.

Not wearing a Trachten is totally fine because the Octoberfests in Germany are originally meant for the working class where people could go wearing their work clothes. So people from the country side used to visit the fest in traditional garments. Lederhosen were very common to be worn at farmer‘s work due to their sturdiness.

Biggest mistake is to believe that wearing Dirndl and Lederhosen at the Oktoberfest is a tradition. It only started in the 1990s. It was more common to wear a suit and nice dress in the beginning or later to go casually. The Dirndl and Lederhosen is just a new way to make more money. Actually as kids n the 1970 we wore Lederhosen all day to play in and they lasted forever.

Yes and no. You're completely right, that wearing Tracht was not as common as today. In the earlier days no tourist or northern German would have lost a thought on wearing that style of garment. But: It always was a thing for real southern Bavarians to come to the Wiesn in Tracht. And the beer brewer march was always in Tracht. The Bavarian tradition was always a thing at the Oktoberfest (as it was all over southern Bavaria, you only had to leave Munich a couple of kms and you would find people wearing Tracht e.g. on sundays in the church and/or the Wirtshaus after).

Our club's plattlerhosen are from Chiemgau, and are smooth and thinner, allowing for a sharper sound. There is no embroidery on the leg. Even more comfortable to wear. We treat them with beeswax and the get shiny. There is a club in Cleveland. Look up Gauverband Nordamerika.

@RoguePhysicist
@RoguePhysicist 7 ай бұрын
The earlier you get, the better as far as crowding is concerned; I found that German locals go in the morning for breakfast, and the tourists begin trickling in as the clock advances. Which is the best? I don't know. It depends on which beer you prefer. Of all the times I went to at Wiesn (Oktoberfest), I wanted to go to the Hofbräu tent, because that is my favorite beer. But it was always too crowded to get into. Last time I went to the Löwenbräu tent, and I enjoyed it (the festbier, aka "superlager", or "Oktoberfest beer" was good-it's a lager with more flavor and higher alcohol content, around 6-point-something percent). In fact, I enjoyed every tent I visited (Paulaner, Augustliner, Hacker, etc). In my experience, one tent is as good as another, so like I said, it really depends on which beer you prefer. And although I never ate in any tent (other than a pretzel, sold by dames walking around within the tent), I believe there are variations on the food that is served. So you might want to check that out ahead of time and go to a tent which has the food you want (although it will be similar amongst the tents). There's one tent that serves wine, and it's called Poschner's. The beer there is Hacker-Pschorr (which is good). It's one of the smaller tents. You might not have a problem finding a seat in that one.

The only mistake one can make about Oktoberfest is to go to it... at least the one in Muenchen. It is overprized, a cliché of the culture, full of (sorry) Scandinavians, Japanese and Chinese who all have one thing in common: they can not hold their liquor (or in this case beer) although it is poorly poured and of the most miserable, i.e. thinnest quality available. Go to the Dult in Regensburg or any of the celebrations held in small villages around Germany, Winefests in Baden Wuerttemberg and Rheinland Pfalz, especially up and down the Mosel river (I love Cochem) Aeppelwoifests in Hessen, and yes the beerheavy fests in Bavaria but NOT MUENCHEN.
@jurgenwilhelm5412
@jurgenwilhelm5412 8 ай бұрын
Come on. The Festbier may be sometimes poorly poured (depends on the tent and the time) but it is definitely not the thinnest quality available. In contrary it has a little bit more alcohol then the every day beer, so you really have to be careful ... There are many reasons not to go to the Oktoberfest (for me, many of them you would also find at every festivity you recommended), the beer is not one of them.

Not specific to Oktoberfest nor even Munich, but I saw a video about Austria. Before the war, in Austria most Trachten were sold in Jewish-owned stores but Jews were not allowed to wear them. In Bavaria too, it was made popular by two German-Jewish shop owners, they were from more North of Germany, but moved to Bavaria and fell in love with the local traditional clothes, so they opened a shop selling them and they became popular. You can also see many German-Jewish people wearing trachten before the war/Nazis came to power. I have family photos like this.

I have only been to Oktoberfest in Williamsburg Virginia the Old Country Busch Gardens, and in the Germany section of Epcot Disney World which has a really delicious German Buffet. That's as close to a real Oktoberfest that I have ever been.

I am German, when i was a little kid, my parents and me went to Orlando FL to the Disney Parks.. There was a German section and my dad tried to order his food in German.. Needless to say the waitress didnt understand any German at all and he had to order in english language.

@@fredflintstone1109 Yes I recently read that it was $50 now. The last time I was there at the German buffet in Epcot which was around ten years ago or so it was only like $24.99 a person. But I don't think I would pay $50 either.

@@ClaudiaG.1979 That's because the United States is an English-speaking Nation. You could find some German people in Pennsylvania that speak German but it's far less unlikely in Orlando.

My town, Helen Georgia, has the Longest Oktoberfest in the world, which lasts for 2 months. My Brother works at a coffee shop and this is the busy season for them, and it is a huge revenue generator. That being said, it isn't as authentic as it is in the Motherland, but it's Americanized.

The Lederhosen reminds me of the specialized clothing the salt miners wore. I had some wonderful tours of the salt mines in Austria and Bavaria. Regarding Oktoberfest, before drinking the beer, have a good dinner first. Feli, wonderful wishes for your travels and a 🤗 from me.

I did my first Oktoberfest about 5 years ago and it was a wild time for our group. My advice: 1) don’t do 5 days in a row like we did, drinking non stop from opening until closing not only nearly killed my wallet but it destroyed my liver and sanity. 2) don’t stress when you see people snorting white powder, it’s not coke it’s menthol and sugar! 3) don’t stand on the bench or climb on someone’s shoulders with your drink, having to drink the equivalent of 1 litre of beer in one go is a slog. Trust me there is a video out there of me doing it. Actually I’m lying do all of that as the place and atmosphere is amazing, so many people, so little trouble and everyone is pretty much drunk. Also the chicken is superb, just make sure you take lots of money as nothing is cheap. It was around 25c everyday when we went so it was perfect. Also the tents have such different atmospheres, Hofbrau tent is more where the tourists go and very lively but awesome. I recommend everyone to do it once, it’s an experience and I still order Hofbrau to have at home here in the UK. I can’t wait go again.

Did it , stayed 45 min and left. Our planet is way too overpopulated to do events like this anymore.. I'm sure octoberfest was fun years ago but... I think we're at the point where anything that says fair, fest Just means you're going to be standing in line all day long event We left and went to the English Garden instead. Less people no lines,

Grüß Di, Feli. I will definitely go to Oktoberfest this year (for the first time) but I will take the train, from where I live in beautiful Tyrol, it is not very far. I know that I will be drinking some good beer and certainly don't want to drive! 😄 so, Viel spaß and who knows? Maybe I'll see you guys over there in München.

Just saw an article saying Tulsa, Oklahoma Oktoberfest voted top 5 in the country. What??? I moved here a few years ago but Covid kept it from happening for a couple of years. Ours is still more than a week away. Oct 19-22. This will be my first in Tulsa. If you want to try a great Oktoberfest up in some gorgeous mountains at a ski resort, put Snowbird, Utah on your bucket list.
