Faced the haka in a college game against exchange New Zealand students, it feels like a proper challenge being thrown down in the moment and you do feel you can’t turn away because it feels like a stare down after it’s done, our side won by two points one of the toughest games I’ve ever played, they breed their rugby players differently in New Zealand, if even one of my drop goals missed I’d have lost the game, I scored 4 just to keep us in distance and thankfully one of our guys got a try to put us just two points ahead, lovely bunch a lads the lot of em even though during the haka it felt like I was facing a group of warriors ready to fight us

Have to say, always have had respect for the Haka and I see it as one of the defining characteristics of the game, but this one and many of the newer incarnations are very theatrical and over the top. I would say the extent of the distraction goes against NZ teams these days, and it really hasn’t any of the impact it used to have anymore.

As a Maori, you are exactly right about this haka being too theatrical and over the top. They need to keep it short and simple. I've left a comment echoing the same sentiments.

The "first" haka was perfect, giving chills and everything. But bro, the "transition" at 1:37 with the little steps like kids in a school show just ruined everything. You passed from "warriors" to "kids doing a show in front of their parents"

totally agree. As a new zealander, I really feel the haka has lost its touch. It just so over the top now, especially for u20 level. It should be kept short and sweet. It definitely should have ended at the 1:32 mark.

As a massive ABs fan, though it pains me to say, I really think the haka has lost it's touch. Seeing this over the top and painfully long rendition from an u20 team is nonsensical to me. At this level, it should be kept short and sweet, a subtle homage to Maori culture. Not this silly, fully choreographed, dance routine with all the hooting and hollering from relatively unproven rugby players. It was almost... dare I say it... cringe.

I have to agree, especially the chahooing. Back In the old days, warriors were actually judged during a haka based on their cohesion, and lack of individuality. Most people aren’t aware that haka was typically much slower and more restrained in many ways.

I love the HAKA, no matter who is doing it. Polynesian, New Zealanders...very intimidating! For all the naysayers and tradition cops here, change happens. Theatrical, yes, choreographed, ok, doesn't matter. It's still awesome. Look at American football, talk about "theatrics"...

Cut most of it out. Way too over the top. This is how Islanders do a haka. This is a Maori custom, not an Island custom.

The Haka is getting old. It should be kept short and sober. We don't want to see a whole tribal show before a rugby game. Plus, it's not fair for the opposing teams that just stand there and can't do anything. I use to love the Haka and be impressed. I'm old now. Watching guys stomping the ground and sticking their tongue out just doesn't do it for me anymore. The ABs barely made it today against brave and humble Welsh, so maybe less Haka and more game...? Anyway, Go France 🇫🇷😉
