Makiwara training is often misunderstood. Here's a video that helps clarify things. How much time do you have to condition your hands? Is it a priority? If so, how important is it to you? These questions determine the approach you can take to your own hand conditioning.
My name is Cameron Quinn and I am a student of Sosai Mas Oyama, founder of Kyokushin Karate. As his interpreter over a period of 17 years, Sosai taught me many things and shared many personal moments. I want to share as much of that with you as possible.
This is a basic description of the hand conditioning approach I have used for more than 30 years. It is safe if you approach it right and incredibly effective. Please be careful and increase the intensity over a long period of time.
Often students put off hand conditioning because they don't have an actual traditional makiwara. But if you have a tree close by that has the right balance of a reasonably soft outer and a solid core then you can start today!
All hand conditioning assumes you understand how to make a correct seiken fist, shuto knifehand, haito ridgehand and shotei palm heel and how to use the techniques properly so you don't injure yourself. If you are not sure, seek advice from your instructor. Safety is paramount.

This video is first and foremost about honesty and I thank you for that. Secondly I honestly believe that the natural makiwara was a tree. Thirdly hand conditioning is about adaption to change but safe adaption. Fourthly hand conditioning is about consistency. Lastly it is about understanding the integrated application of techniques or how it all comes together. Great video. Thank you.

Nice video. Great advice, especially about haito can tweek the shoulder and elbow joints and keeping fingers separated with the shuto. I have learned both of these over the years with experience. Have sometimes wondered why we teach the shuto with clenched fingers. I guess that if we didn't though most people would have their fingers too wide. Never have trained in Mas Oyama's style but I have often used his books as a guide to workout. Also great advice about going slow and build up.

Hi proper instructions good video,can you do this daily and for how long??
@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate
@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate 3 жыл бұрын
Whether you do it daily depends on age, as well as hand health. It's actually a good goal to aim for, but really take your time building up the volume. If you start steadily and are patient so you give the hand time to strengthen and thicken through the bones, then eventually it is no problem to do it daily. Just rest if you feel you need to. It is also good to keep volume a little lower once you're doing it daily. So instead of building to 100 of each every day, I'd stop at 50 of each every day for a few months. The whole thing is giving the hand time to respond to the training. That takes months and years.

If you want to use an actual okinawan-style makiwara wrap I'm not too sure. Perhaps online martial arts suppliers? But if you want to use what I use here you can eaasily make them clean and dry sand inside two heaviest-duty plastic bags you can find, and that inside a couple of hessian bags. You can also make a frame support for it with scaffolding.

I believe it is the Melaleuca quinquenervia. Commonly called the paper bark tree. Soft on the outside, hard on the inside. Great for hand conditioning. Although the tree I am using in this video is a different species. I think that one is a pine of some sort.

I have a question. I you just wanted to condition your hand for boxing and MMA, would you need all of those different types of strikes?
@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate
@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate 2 ай бұрын
That's a good question because it kind of addresses the core of the point of makiwara training. It is less about hardening the knuckles and more about making the hand, arm joints and shoulders stronger and denser to support increasingly heavier punching. So it is, I think, really important to do all the techniques so that the hand and arm are conditioned all angles, top, bottom, outside, inside. Then work on the correct fist form. Then good fist striking will be naturally better. But if you just work the fist the shoulder, arm and hand can never be fully strengthened for the stronger punches.
@FLMKane
@FLMKane 2 жыл бұрын
Osu shihan, I wouldn't say it's friction that heats up the bag or makiwara. It's strain energy that degrades into internal molecular energy. That's significant because strain energy is also the source of damage in materials. Frictional damage would be akin to road rash. Strain or stress damage would cause plastic (permanent deformation) plus a certain percentage that converts to heat.
@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate
@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate 2 жыл бұрын
Not being a scientist, the first thing that comes to mind when heat is felt is friction. I have to admit, the thought that it was possibly strain energy degrading into internal molecular energy didn't actually cross my mind! :D SO thank you for the correction! :) Osu to that.
@FLMKane
@FLMKane 2 жыл бұрын
@@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate Osu Shihan, I meant that as a long winded compliment. If the makiwara is heating up, that means you're putting in some serious and damaging amount of energy. I must admit that I have a masters in engineering so thats why I quickly figured out why there was heat.

I have been curious/skeptical about this kind of training for a while. In the early ufc they had Gerard Gordeau from a kyokushin background, but he broke his hand on the first round. As someone who has done this for a long time, what is your opinion on the realistic upper limitations of this kind of training?
@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate
@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate 3 жыл бұрын
Gerard had an unlucky break and hit a bad angle with a loose hand. That'll do it. AT the end of the day having a strongly conditioned hand void of injury is always going to be better than an unconditioned hand I think. The degree one wants to take the conditioning is personal. This kind of thing is less about the knuckles and more about the weak links: the bones in the hand, the wrist, elbow, shoulder. I know there are many who have taken it well beyond what I have done and that is not for me. But it DOES suit them and some that I know well who have been doing this training in excess of 50 years have no ongoing injury at all and in fact have very healthy hands for their age. What alternative would you be thinking about?
@joshuabrant3487
@joshuabrant3487 3 жыл бұрын
@@CameronQuinnKyokushinKarate I dono about an alternative. I just know lots of people have an attitude of if they get in a real fight without wraps they will probably break their hand, but the probability of that happening is low anyways. Definitely your hands look pretty normal as do most I think who occasionally do some makiwara. Its the Chinese iron palm guys who have got really mangled looking hands. Some of the traditional Okinawan karate is freaky too punching solid rocks.

The objective is to condition the hands, not to injure. You should find a solid tree to work on and see for yourself that whilst there is a slightly softer outer layer the inner core of the tree is still very solid, so the resistance level is very suitable to hand conditioning.
