The problem with Reno and surrounding area is all the Californians that wanted to get away from calfornia and yet brought it with them

My wife and I were traveling through Reno two years ago and decided, “hey, let’s take a break and walk our dogs down by the river!!!” OMG. OMG. OMG This beautiful rushing river literally playing backdrop to “Night of the Living Dead”. We got the hell out of there and just banged our heads on the utter waste of a beautiful resource

I moved here from Vegas a few years ago. Too many pros to list. I love it here. But there are cons. Yes the wind blew down my wooden fence one year. I feel its based on location too. Friends in Washoe valley get hammered while I sit comfy in Spanish Springs on the same day. Friends in the North Valleys get dumped with snow and can barely drive out of their neighborhood because the city doesnt snow plow their street but I get just a dusting of white powder in Sparks that is gone by lunch time. Reno has pockets of slums and homeless mostly downtown. But the burbs are nice. Sommerset, Damonte ranch, Wingfield Springs/Red Hawk, Galena Forrest Estates area remind me of the bay area. Supper clean, million-dollar homes and looks like a 200-acre master planned community. My biggest complaint is that the riverfront could have been a goldmine of tourism but its squandered by city planners. Yes you can walk or ride bikes on the trails but you better be prepared to see trash and homeless. Its not pretty when it could be. The riverfront trails here are sad. Absolute wasted opportunity for the city. Its slowly getting cleaned up but it wont be done in my lifetime. Ive been around the world and back and I know a sad riverfront when I see one. 1 mile of nice and 20 miles of crap is not good for business. The water literally comes from Lake Tahoe. Its such a waste of resources. Public elementary and middle schools seem good here. I have kids in all 3 levels. HS doesnt impress me. Hardly any programs that live up to my oldest sons expectations being a former GATE student in Vegas. Private school is a must if you have the money. Traffic at 5pm is horrible at the bowl. learn the side streets or take the McCarran beltway or Veterans hwy if you can. And if there is a crash on hwy 80 going to or from Tesla.....enjoy your 2 hours of meditation in your car. There are no side streets. We like sushi and Asian food. Yes they have it here but its not up to our standards. If you get a fork with your meal....its not a real Japanese restaurant. Also if they give you a Chinese spring roll along with your Japanese food....again....they are hoping you dont know anything about real Japanese food. I get it...its Reno....its not a coastal city....but I have to point out bad food when I see it. I still love it here though because there is a long list of good things that outweigh the bad lol.

Agreed, I think for me personally being from the California coast, the biggest con is the weather. I think there is something to be said for the seasonal depression I've experienced here. I will say the snowboarding is awesome however.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my visits to Reno. It's one of the few places in the USA I would enjoy living. Californians are fine: it's the Kalifornians that are a problem. They're screwing everything up where I live, too (Nashville, TN vicinity).

You should spotlight the terrible property management companies that are here from California. There are so many bad companies running apartments and where not to live.

As someone who lives in northwestern NV, my issue with Reno, is that they pushed the idea of the whole city being a giant suburban sprawl. you don't feel like you're part of a town, just a neighborhood of of you and 100,000 other people and you need to drive to get anywhere. Its a beautiful valley, but the growth was poorly managed. You stated that the cost of living is more affordable for you, and yeah, for you. People in Cali sold their houses for 700,000+ and could buy a house in Reno for 300,00 with some left over and so that drove the price way way up. especially since the average family income for the Reno area is 60,000, but according to the housing index, to buy a new house, you need a medium family income of 89,000 so yeah, its a problem for locals with average jobs.

It’s a highland with wetlands. Plenty of green and water in spring/summer. I’ve been here just over one year (NOT from Cali). I’m not in love with Reno, but it’s got everything, including Tahoe being so close. The infrastructure is well maintained. But lacks a real identity of its own, and there is NO big indoor mall with good stores, if that matters to you.

moved out of Reno years ago which was a great decision. Moved to a nice town in norcal (Chico) which is known to be a liberal area but now is a red county. Meanwhile Reno has strangely gotten very democratic since I left. My friends told me how strict it was there during covid which I'd never thought would happen in Reno.

@@jaykwonzzz LOL well if you considered it a privilege to walk around the grocery store that's really saying something. I remember in Nevada by law you needed to sign up and make a reservation to eat out. Coming from CA that seemed a little extreme.
@jaykwonzzz
@jaykwonzzz 2 ай бұрын
@@kalidilerious Did you exist during Covid? Reno was on par with the rest of the nation in terms of lockdown policy and absolutely had less restrictions than California. I’ve lived here for my entire life and since I’ve been voting (18 years now) Washoe County has been blue. Obama won the state twice because of Washoe and Clark, Clinton won the state, and Biden won the state. Hillary Schieve, a progressive Democrat, has been mayor of Reno for a decade and Bob Cashell was as middle of the road as it gets. So, I’m not sure where you’ve been for the past two decades, but Reno has been firmly Dem-run for almost twenty years now.

Pros lots to do like concerts, hiking, food etc etc. 10 years ago, the cost was reasonable. Now it's getting on a California level. And income here does not match the cost of living. Crime has tripled just in the last 5 years. Source RPD and Sparks PD. Yes, downtown has nice spots. But yes, there's a lot of homelessness. Traffic has gone from bad to worse, especially during commute times. But yes there are plenty of nice things about Reno. I plan on leaving the area as we've become Nevadafornia. I almost forgot we have the highest gas taxes in the nation. And the 2nd highest grocery prices.

I have traveled around the country and lived in 3 other states but have found Reno to be the best place to live. I have been hers 28 years and plan on staying here through retirement. Taxes are lower than most states, politics are moderate, weather is great including the amount of days sunny. If is growing in size but would you rather live in a dying city?

Probably around Greg Street. Reno isn't massive, so the areas you're looking at are limited. That said, Greg Street seems to house mostly small to medium sized businesses, including machine shops.

@@FarBear-by6rw Babe, gtfo. Do you live here? Rapid expansion of industry locally coupled with Californians moving to Reno to escape CA cost of living has absolutely contributed to a massive cost of living increase, with demand for housing rapidly outpacing supply. So, where in the fuck do you think these people come from, if not CA? Drive on any Reno/Sparks road and you'll see nearly as many CA license plates as NV plates. What's more, there was also a massive influx of people right after coov lockdowns that were selling homes in CA, then buying in NorNev with cash and they'd price out local home buyers because they didn't have to worry about LTV on a mortgage.

With regards to your gas price piece, you can totally blame Reno/ Sparks for that. As a people we continue to keep voting for increases to gas taxes for everything under the sun. The latest was to help give more money for schools, when we originally voted to ear mark money from the sale of weed to go to schools, which never did. So glad we legalized that nonsense.
