I can see that there are a lot of angry people over this! wow! Let's clear something up. To "rotate" the hips or "open" the hips IS NOT the same as "pivoting". It's a big difference. On the jab when you rotate slightly your hips will open, as opposed to when you pivot they will close. This is critical key point. Don't pivot to turn your hips on the jab. That being said, I'll change the title of the video so it makes more sense.

Hey coach..question, is it also your opinion that in your boxing stance, your weight is more distributed to you rear leg/foot..let's say 60/40? That should make the jab more powerful. Please you're thoughts on this subject. Keep them coming coach!

Hey coach, you are 100 percent right. I've boxed for a number of years and you taught it perfect. There are always "experts" in the comments. I always leave positive comments and people will look for a debate and I don't even waist my time with know it all's and haters. I've got nasty replies and I don't even respond to them otherwise I feel like I'm just as much of an idiot as the person that has nothing better to do but go through the comment section to look for an argument. You do an excellent job and I've learned so much from your videos. And you taught this video perfect, I don't care what the haters say. Thank you and I appreciate you bro

Yep perfect content on the correct jab form. In boxing sometimes you can sacrafice correct form in order to set up something else, but this is a personal style and advance tactics, which alays from a correct techical point are considered as mistakes and people should start to change their style only after they have very solid basics and know them. Great content!!!

@@kennethduff248 Hi Mr. Duff! Im sorry to bother you and chat you up like that - but you stated that you have years of experience in Boxing.. - could I ask you a question maybe? Do you have also like experience with "striking injuries"? Im a newbie to striking - did mainly wrestling before - and while I did some pad work the other day at class - i threw a quick jab - I misjudged distance- missed the pad and snapped my ellbow right in the opposite direction of the joint. Of course I laughed it of , I trained on and even now it sounds like a sissy thing - but since then my ellbow joint seems to get stiffer and stiffer everyday - it hurts and it like collapses to the tiniest form of resistance. (14 days till now) Obviously I am going to the doctor tomorrow - but wanted to check out if there is some anecdotal tipps by really experienced guys out there.. Any tipps would be very highly appreciated since my arm feels completly useless right now :/ I hope I didnt steal much of your time!

I agree that the hip shouldn’t rotate as it would on a hook BUT the shoulder should rotate forward for maximum extension and snap. The chin should also be down and will be tucked behind the shoulder when the jab is extended.

The jab has many many variations, I use the hip rotation in the jab, but is a little rotation with the back foot and I can get power with it I think each person have a particular way to throw punches in an optimal way. Thats why the practitioner have to know and train a lot of variations as it´s possible (sorry about my english but it´s not my lenguaje) Thanks for your videos!

Good tips. I think various distances call for different jabbing techniques though. If we're already fairly close, "riding" the jab even closer to the target might be counterproductive to what we want to do in the situation. A hip-pivoted jab (non-exaggerated) lets us maintain our distance to the target, while still outputting decent power, which might help during certain combination setups.

the rotation of the hip with the jab is for maximum extension not power and as such is a much better punch for a taller, longer fighter than a shorter fighter who should keep his foot planted for better power and combination speed.

It is a subtle difference between pivoting your hips, and popping your hips forward. They look very similar, but have different directional components. The Russians have been teaching it this way for years. So yes, don't pivot, but DO open your hips so you can pop them and give slight extra range and snap. Your thoughts?

I think there are many jabs, and rotation on the hip is one of them. Especially if you jab to the body and bend the waste. Frolov boxing advise for turning the hip, putting the step inside on the jab for 1-2,because this gives momentum to load the 2.

It helps me to hold my jab out against a wall and tweak my footing and slightly lean back a bit more and i feel way more power, naturally a lean a bit foward too much for stability. Its less of a lean back, your upper back doesnt lean back rather your lower back comes foward, really throwing your hips into it. You can perfect the point of impact for all your punches against a wall just find a corner for hooks or a ledge for uppercuts

Read Jack Dempsey's book. It is the best straight punches guide I have ever seen. Then you will be able to comment on/verify the information given to you online. You will also be able to distinguish between a jab and a left straight punch as both use slightly different mechanics. Try analysing the follownig combination: jab (to close distance) -> cross -> left straight. The last left straight punch relies on the centrifugal force generated from untwisting your body from the cross into your forward facing stance.

I remember about 15 years ago I was taught to throw the jab originally with the 3rd example you showed. I was told to shift my weight to the ball of my foot on the lead leg. Then I developed a more powerful jab by pushing off the back foot just the way you explained. I agree with everything you said in this video. I also see many people using there hip rotation on the jab and when I tried it it felt unnatural and uncomfortable, and slower it felt more like a lead cross than a jab. So I always wondered should I start getting use to using hip in my jab? And thanks for this video you cleared up alot for me. I appreciate you JT. Thank you for all you do. I wonder if you can comment on Muay Thai jabs here. I come from a boxing background, and I was taught to jab as you show. Now I train muay thai and they tell me I don't jab right. The stance is a bit different, sure, but they tell me to use my hip a lot more for the jab, and not to take the "shuffling steps", or "drop step" you're showing. I feel the power comes from the step as you describe, even in the muay thai stance.

I feel as thought this video might've been met less apprehensively if you'd framed it as "ways to strengthen your jab" as opposed to "don't _______!" It took me a bit to get to the "a-ha" as to what you were getting at. Your stance seems to be pretty bladed too? (This is the first time I've seen this channel; it just popped up based on the algorithm.) I think your advice definitely benefits your stance, so I don't want to detract from your clear experience with this method! I follow more of a squared stance, so it might be cool if you make a video touching on jabs for that as well (again, you may have already; I'm just going off the cuff here.) Anyway, always nice to see self-defense education videos! Keep it up!

@kennethduff248
@kennethduff248 2 жыл бұрын
I don't mean to side bust in your question, but that was how I was taught, and your supposed to land with weight on the ball/toe of the foot. There is Many variations of the jab. So learn different varieties. When you can throw the same punch many different ways you will find more success. But always land your weight on the balls of your feet. And move on and off the balls of your feet. ( Front of your foot) in anything you do. Never put weight on your heals at any point, that will mess up your balance and it is slower to move from. Anytime you step, your step off the balls of feet and land on balls of feet. Even if you plant your feet, you still move on and off balls of feet Hope that helps. When I was a beginner that was one of the 1st fundamentals I learned and is taught.

I think this is great and mostly true.... but as coaches some athelete will always find a way to make what we say is wrong viable because each fighters body and bone structure varies so much... I've found a slight hip rotation on the jab does take from its power for me BUT.... it adds to its speed especially if I do it last moment. Not only speed but trajectory, and we all know the hardest punches to avoid are the ones that change speed and direction suddenly

Watching different channels in boxing is overwhelming…. One coach sayed push with back leg so you don’t telegraph the step and here the coach say step with in front foot..

I get you. You can actually do either depending on what you're trying to do. Don't think of Boxing in terms of right/wrong or only this way/that way.

They're Asics indoor court shoes. Indoor court shoes are some of the best for training on hard surfaces.

If you transfer the weight to the front foot you have no weight left to transfer when you throw a rear straight as part of a 1-2?

Good question. Short answer is you don't transfer all the weight on the front leg. Regardless of what punch you throw, you must be in position to move, adapt and change based on your opponent. This is a good short breakdown of *basic* Jan setups

"rotate slightly" is not the same as "pivot". It's a clear difference.

Do you twist your ankle, though? That's what my boxing coach told me to do, and if I'm not mistaken, I should do both when punching

Hey you Boxers out there! I could use a little help by an experienced boxer! :/ Do any of you guys have a experience with "striking injuries"? When I did some pad work the other day at class - i threw a quick jab - I misjudged distance- missed the pad and snapped my ellbow right in the opposite direction of the joint. Of course I laughed it of , I trained on and even now it sounds like a sissy thing - but since then my ellbow joint seems to get stiffer and stiffer everyday - it hurts and it like collapses to the tiniest form of resistance Do any of you guys have experience with that? I am going to the doctor tomorrow - but wanted to check out if there is some anecdotal tipps i could use.. Thank you guys in advance! Any tipps would be very appreciated since my arm feels useless right now :/
