As someone who does not yet know Russian, 3 of those words sounded so similar; I would probably need years of practice to not accidentally call a little girl "grandpa" 😂

As a native Russian speaker, I can tell you the following. You're totally right when you say "Direct translation of words can lose a lot of meaning". But there's a little memo, which can help you to ease the understading of the context: Девочка (little girl) is a definition to describe a female from the birth (yeah, toddler is also девочка) until the first menstruation. But also девочка may be used as a very tender way to call your lovely girlfriend. There's a famous Russian song named Девочка моя (My girl) - and this song DOESN'T relate to a very little girl, of course! Девушка (girl/maiden - and I think, maiden is the closest equivalent to девушка) is a definition of a female who already has menstruations, but she's still a virgin. Also, Девушка is a commom address to any young woman. Even if she's 30 years old. If you see a woman who looks quite pretty and young - address her Девушка and she'll certainly like it, cause it shows you appreciate her good-looking appearence and doesn't consider her being too old. Женщина (woman) is a definition of a female who isn't virgin anymore. Also it's a common address to an adult female, who's obviously not too young. Like in het 35-40. But use this word very carefully - if spoken with wrong intonation and mistaken addressing, it sounds too insulting Бабушка (grandmother) is a definition of a female who has grandchildren or she's older then 60 years. If you see an old woman at the street and you offer her some help, addressing her бабушка - it's a gamble, really, Some would like it (especially, when you address her with softness and kindness at your voice), some would not, thinking you consider them being too old. It's quite safe to use бабушка while addressing very old woman, if you're certain she's more than 70-75 years old. Мальчик (boy) - nothing to add, you said everything alright Молодой человек (young man) - it's typical addressing any male person who isn't too adult (nearly the same situation as with девушка). I'm nearly 29 years old, and I'm an adult, of course, but most likely I'll be still addressed ad Молодой человек, because I'm not so old yet. Мужчина (Man) - nothing to add also. Дедушка (grandfather) - unlike Бабушка this words is used to address the other person less often, even if you're pretty sure this man is really old, but it's quite hard to explain it in detailes in one commentary. Also one of the commentators below said about word Юноша. This word exists, of course, but it's used less usually. The closest equivalent in English is "juvenile", I think. Officially, юноша is a male, who is somewhere between 14-15 ages up to 21-22. There's a system of sport categories in Russian sport, and there're three levels: Childern's, Juvenile and Adult. Juvenale is okay for someone who studies at high school or at the first courses of university, but it's inappropriate for a person of 25 yo, for example. In this case, Юноша is a synonym of someone, who isn't a boy anymore, but he hasn't made the last step to be addressed Молодой человек, isn't considered too mature. And also note the very inportant fact - Юноша is never used to address to any person. It's more like the name of the class of males, but it's not a way to address anybody

Very informative and entertaining, thank you. These cultural/lexical differences in languages are amusing. Hello is an interesting one. In English it is used for a greeting, but in most European languages it is also used to attract attention (but not in English) and in French the word allo is not used as a greeting at all except when you are on the telephone when it is the standard greeting word. I think Привет works like hello in English and notlike hello in many European languages German for example, that is to say Привет is only used as a greeting. It is never used to attract attention, am I right?
