Should you shave your Pomeranian in the summer? (or any other double-coated dogs). Please watch this before shaving a Pomeranian/double-coated dog. As summer is coming, I think shaving dogs might be on the to-do list of many dog owners. That's why I'm doing this video to warn people of the risks of shaving Pomeranians or any double-coated dogs, and what might happen if you shave a Pomeranian. In my opinion, it's best that you don't shave down your double-coated dogs unless you really have to. For example, you are rescuing a dog with skin allergies/fleas and ticks and you need to shave your dog down completely to get rid of the issues before it starts affecting their health.

Unfortunately my parents have no other choice but to do an annual short shave because he is extremely aggressive when a brush goes even an inch near him so he is unable to get brushed which leads to matting. It's purely to get the mats out for the dogs hygiene/health

This is something I have SUCH a hard time explaining to people we pass by in the summer. So many people think my pomeranian should be shaved! Cannot convince them otherwise. You gave a great explanation!

Trust me I feel you! I've encountered many people without any understanding of the breed and at the same time super vocal and judgemental 😂 Sometimes I try to explain nicely to them especially if they're a Pom owner themselves because I don't want the Pom to suffer but if they're just someone who doesn't even own a dog/Pom, I'll just smile and and keep walking to preserve my positive energy haha!

The other day I was walking mine one and a lady shouted: "Look love! A Pomeranian with ALL of his fur!" It's heartbreaking that so many people don't know about it or don't listen to the vet "because they look better". We cannot take our dog to the canine hairdresser because they will cut no matter what you say. That being said, I've learned not to judge in general. I've gotten across many shaved Pomeranians that were like that because of skin problems or something alike, sometimes they are not capable of fully recovering. Well, you know better. The point is that it is not always misinformation, which I also deem somewhat inexcusable since the vet and the provider should always tell you.

I just shaved my pom mix corgi before I know about the fact that they have double-coated fur and shouldn’t be shaved :( I know it is stupid but I hope you have the solution for me and mine. I am totally regret it.

i shaved my poms and they looked like foxes for the rest of summer, i never knew they’re coat can help them cool down. never doing that again :((

Haha! I'm there with you! ❤️ With the summer coming, the number of people asking me the question with judgy eyes has increased significantly. Sometimes I'm thinking in my head "Do you want the long answer or the short answer?". At least now next time someone ask me that question, I can point them towards my video lol 😂

The lady who approached you hahaha. It's great when people give you advice but sometimes you gotta think about it before doing anything. You wouldn't want anything to happen to Cece 'cause you mentioned about the coat of your dog. You have given enough information about shaving your Pomeranian and I just enjoy it every time I watch your videos. Cece always looking sleepy. Great video! Most importantly, if you shave or cut them down short, their hair will not grow back the same way. You will see no hair regrowth, or patchy regrowth, in some cases balding.

Every summer in Manhattan, I see Poms that have been shaved. I don’t see people shaving other Spitz breeds, so why they think Poms need to be shaved I don’t know.

Oh yeaa you have a very good point there! It’s true that people don’t really shave other Splitz breeds, and yet every summer I come across many judgy eyes, and people that come directly to me to confront me for not shaving my Pom 😅 I try my best to give them the short answer as to why I don’t do it but it does get pretty tiring to deal with the interrogations on a frequent basis 😂

Thank u as always for sharing your knowledge. I always watch even though i don’t have my SWEET Bennie all the time. I make sure my son and his girl watch it. I now have 3 wonderful dogs I SOOO ADORE! My lovable Kai (blue nose pit) who came on the scene first about 7 yrs ago. Bennie who is exactly the same color of Cece and NOW my other child (adult) Michaela who also has the pit with her husband they have since bought a shitzu named Honey. She is black and white and SOOO freaking adorable 🥰 LOVE them all.

Of course everyone make mistakes but it's good because we are learning from there.. OMG sissy you today was a professor that I loved your graphics too and oh yeah.. medical issues.. I agree mine is patchy but due to heat and having fits his fur had to come off. Would not have cut otherwise he has lion cut.

Usually good groomers are aware of this so you don’t have to worry much 🥰 If you want, you can remind them not to trim too close to their skin and makes sure that the guard hair is still longer than the the undercoat! 💕

I don't have my Pomeranian yet and I'm learning a lot of things before he comes, I didn't know that they can't be shaved, I live in a very hot place and I was worried about the heat, I was thinking of shave him, I thought it was Ok, now I know that is dangerous for him, I'm going to buy a cool pet pad.

Aww how responsible of you to do all the research beforehand! Yes keeping them hydrated with access to water at all times, and making sure they stay in a cool area with fans & air-condition as well as keeping the walk relatively short during the summer is the keys to prevent Poms from overheating! 💕

I have come across so many dodgey people online that all claim to be local breeders but they end up being so far away. I refuse to pay for a dog to be sent to me as I dont trust that process & have heard of cases where people have paid money & recieved no dog. Please give me some pointers... @@joditawhai7844 yes I agree that going out there and seeing the breeder and the puppies and their parents for yourself is always the best way to make sure (1) you are not scammed, and (2) the dogs are well taken care of by a loving and responsible breeder. So many nowadays are just in it for the money! 😥 I have an article on “How to find a good breeder” on my website that I just recently published, maybe that could help you with choosing the right one? ❤️

Hi! Common online sources recommend once a month so that it doesn’t dry out their skin too much but to be honest there’s no way my Pom can last that long without a bath. They will be super smelly and dirty if waiting that long :( I’ve done my research and come to a conclusion that dry skin is often a result of inadequate diet not of bathing too often. I have been bathing my Poms every 1-2 weeks, on rare occasions if I’m really busy then it can go up to 3 weeks. They’ve never once had any dry skin problem, and if anything I feel like frequent bathing helps with their coat growth and health. Choosing a gentle and hydrating shampoo would also help! I mentioned the one I use in my “How to groom a Pomeranian at home” video. With that being said, if your Pom is really smelly between baths, you might want to look into dry shampoo to lessen the smell. I hope this helps! ❤️

My pom has all of her hair but she damn near dies of heat during the summer. There's so much bad regurgitated misinformation about dogs on the internet it's ridiculous. I don't shave my dog nor would I recommend it simply because a pom is a pom because of their beautiful coat and I wouldn't want to risk damaging its structure. But the idea that having longer thicker hair will somehow keep them cooler is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. The argument completely ignores the fact that poms are dogs, and dogs are mammals and thus produce body heat, which that giant thick coat traps!!!

well done. We had a friend that shaved their dog and her coat never looked the same again. One of the reasons we got a pom is because we loved the long hair. THEY are also very proud of their long hair. lol

THIS! - I agree with you - they are absolutely proud of their long hair haha! One some rare occasions that I needed to shave my Poms to treat their skin allergies, they did not look happy after being shaved at all! Also the coat might never look the same again! :) Thank you for sharing your own experience so that more Pom owners are aware of the consequences of shaving!

Sugar has Alopecia, she’s losing her hair. I think she is somewhat depressed because of it. The way they prance around and fluff up their fur you can tell they are proud of it. 😂 Kitty does that and Sugar used to do that.

Oh noo I'm so sorry! Well sometimes it's really hard to change people belief about a myth/misconception. Best thing is to wait for your mom to see how your dog's fur is not growing back to normal after shaving so she can see it for herself I guess :(

In theory, double-coated dogs should not be shaved. In reality, some puppy parents neglect grooming and the poor dog ends with a badly matted coat. Not just an occasional mat, the dog's coat has become felt. Dogs who are well-cared for can keep their double coats. I live in Central Texas where any fluffy fur coat can be a problem. Pomeranians come originally from cold areas where all that fluffy fur is advantageous.

I am sure this information applies to My baby boy simba 🐱 .He is a pure bred semi punch face Persian cat and I haven't shaved him down although everyone keeps telling me to do so. I won't listen to them now or ever 😂 😂 😂. I am going to show them your video instead. I love my cat and he is going to keep his bush coat forever.
