Making games takes a looong time, and you can't just work 24/7. But maybe you get filled with guilt when you're not working on your game. How do you combine relaxation (or time away from the screen at least) whilst still making progress on your game?

Actually I think you need to divide your time in more than two: - Time behind the computer actually implementing things or making publicity, managing etc. - Time exploring to find new ideas, e.g. looking at/playing other games, toying with paper games, brainstorming with team members - Quiet time reflecting what has been going on the last year, months, weeks, days. - Time with family, friends - Time deliberately not-thinking about game-dev preferably away from any screens, e.g. sports, nature, music, books, general newspapers. I think, trying to see everything through the eyes of game-dev may eventually lead to stress (burn-out), especially in a period where there is an unforeseen big negative event in your game-dev career. I think it will be hard to relativize and maybe this could trigger a burnout. (I never had a burnout and I was never close, but I also never released a computer game)

I'll definitely try to remember these when I work on a game, but first I have to figure out how to get to working on games again...

Play the competition 2:40 is in my case not so easy, because I don't know similar games like I plan to make. One of my game ideas is: A 3rd person action adventure - dystopian game, but it would be totaly different than most of the "normal" games ... a beautiful female character escapes for a laboratory without nothing, she got no idea what's going on, she knows nothing (can't speak, can't read, got no idea what clothes are), she learns nothing, she is immortal but extremly weak, she is very clumsy and looses often the weapon while fighting, extreme falldamage would exist, in the game would be no inventory only what she can carry in the right and left hand, climbing would not be possible with something in the hands that means throwing all away, no UI (no menu, no lifebar, no map, no tutorial), the enemies would be other similar like her, zombies, robots, animals and many traps ..... the whole game would be a torture to play, and it would be possible that the game could be banned at Steam. lol If someone knows a similar game ... please let me know

I'd just go around and maybe spend my time in a cafe or shopping for snacks. Working on game dev could be the hardest out there especially when you're a solo dev.

I’m also a Search and Rescue volunteer and have alot of specialized training as well as maintaining physical fitness so I get LOTS of time away from my game dev. I have medical rescue training that I need to keep freah with seperate training and knowledge on dealing with medical emergencies. Non of this is my job either. Very opposite world from game dev.

When you have 1 year left in college to make a game that should prolly start you off financially somewhere before you get kicked into the workforce, the idea of taking a break is very scarce in my mind

My main problem is college. Engineering just takes too much time and for me to really be able to focus on making games, most other things have to go (except for health/family ideally)

Couple truths from the other side: 1- Education is not just what you've learned in the classroom. Particularly in engineering, you'll also need soft skills & time-management. So it's good to pencil in some time to make friends, maybe swap some "dream game" ideas, and get used to working & speaking with your peers-to-be from other backgrounds & disciplines. It is a legit use of your time. 2- Grades don't matter as much as you'd think. GPA can matter if you're on-track for an elite Master's program, or a top firm/internship. Otherwise, the education itself is most important, and an A vs A- is not that big a deal. Good luck though, we always need more solid engineers!

This was actually the last video I recorded in Japan, I returned back to Belgium last week. I actually spent 2 months there, with some special videos such as talking with Japanese press, localization and game studios. -M

Please, I think you're assuming things about your viewers (talking about 'your wife'). You have a range of viewers, it's good to word things so that everyone feels included

That came out quite rough indeed. I'm convinced it was not really his intention and probably also because English is not his first language. Still you cannot talk about people like that when you are an adult.
