I'm kinda glad we're moving away a bit from the 'launch Steam page immediately!' advice. You need something reasonable to show, and a basic trailer I think.

There at least needs to be enough to establish your main hooks (or USPs). Things can still be buggy, or half-implemented, but the core fundamentals - incl genre, gameplay loop, artstyle, and overall story/theme should all be locked-down and clearly conveyed. If you're still asking yourself the "5 W's", then it's still too early.

As english is not my native language i often get to see the translated steam pages. Those can be a disaster. Recently in the discord i saw a steampage linked that used the term "blast off for glory" which got translated into the german "Blasen für Ruhm" which is like "blowing for glory" and disappointingly the game is not about making your way to the top in the adult industry by sucking a lot of schlongs, it's about space. Other than these funny anecdotes, what's the impression about the game you, as a customer, get if the text reads like it's made by someone who lost half their brain in an accident? Well, it is not exactly convincing. There's a google sheet with common game related terms, that may help. Can't put links here but if you search for "Polyglot Gamedev common strings" you will find it.

Trailers are overrated, you need polished gameplay for a trailer. 1. Launch your page with varied screenshots 2. "Announce" your game with a trailer to 'shock' Steam alg. to start showing your game (that's actually an important step that Chris Z. talks about in his course, Steam won't show your game unless you bring the audience first)

Yes, but on the other hand, just launching the page gives you some increased visibility - Chris said it's probably people who watch for all new pages or something like that, since it's not Steam giving you that. But I guess launching with everything else polished might be good enough.

Concerning the screenshots, Chris Zukowski recommended in a recent video that you shouldn't be afraid to "fake" variety in your screenshots. Obviously don't be misleading but if you know something is going to make into the final game and it just isn't ready yet, you can still make it look nice for a screenshot without actually implementing all of the mechanics.

ah yes The Day Before marketing strategy 😂 but yes you have a good point. I've added some lighting effects by just drawing on a screenshot before cuz adding it to the game is a bit more complex

there is a small indie dev who faked the gifs. He animated stuff that is not yet in game that will be in later. But he knew that having visually pleasing gifs was the way to go (iirc he was aiming for releasing demo on next fest and wanted to have steam page up few days or weeks before).

I'm watching this a second time... and re-writing my comment. The Free licenses are how many people "purchased" your demo. It doesn't necessarily mean they didn't play the game, it means Steam isn't aware of whether or not they downloaded the game, only that they pressed the button to accept the demo and now have the demo in their library. So you had 9 thousand people add the demo to their library, and around 1600 of them played it which would be 17%. That's what the Unique users means. Having only sold 104 copies of the game though, is almost exactly 10% of the people who played the demo. That's where your conversion data comes from.

A thing to add about controller support, it's not just controller. It's basically accessibility support. Many disabled gamers out there with their own controller setups which is what allows them to game at all

Nothing wrong with making an indie RPG... you just need to streamline the heck out of it. You can have a simple character follow a simple story and focus in on, say, ~one~ core game mechanic, like an ability system for ~one~ weapon. You dont need all these multiple classes, and weapons, and cities, and horse riding, and swimming, and merchants, and day night cycle, and open world, and yada yada. Just because you are progressing a character through a story doesn't mean you have to create a whole ass functioning world to set up a whole ass second life in.

Thanks for this helpful and informative video! I attempted to do some marketing for my first Steam game and wasn't able to get much traction. I definitely did a lot of things wrong (like releasing in Early Access with no marketing/wishlists) and am trying to learn from my mistakes for my newest game. One of the biggest issues I ran into with emailing KZfaqrs was that I actually got blocked by Google for sending out too many emails. I think it's some sort of anti-bot tech and it went away eventually, but I was wondering if you've experienced something similar.
@bitemegames
@bitemegames 2 күн бұрын
I haven't experienced that yet, I've sent out emails through our own email servers (not gmail), but even when using gmail, you can normally send hundreds of emails without being marked as spam. If that is the case though, you can look at using a service like mailchimp to send the emails for you. -M

I’m currently in university and am using Phaser3 through a course. Simple description is it makes creating an HTML canvas game on the web slightly easier. You treat it like a frame work just import it in your JavaScript file and you get some useful methods to call upon that make stuff slightly easier. If you are wanting to learn core mechanics related specifically to the programming side of game development I would recommend it. Other than being a tool to help learn it’s doesn’t even belong on a list like this lol.
