In this video I crush pure sodium metal in the hydraulic press. First I show how sodium reacts with water explosively. Then I crush the sodium metal in the hydraulic press until it is flat like aluminum foil. After that I get the bright idea to spray it with water since it has so much surface area.
Send me things to crush at:
PO Box 482
North Plains OR 97133
*If you do send me something message me so I know it's coming!

Oh my god you're a life saver! It was a regular Monday and I was doing my daily morning routine of flattening my sodium metal in a hydraulic press, when suddenly I thought, "Hey, I wonder what would happen if I poured some water on it!" I was just about to try it when I got a push notification saying that you had just uploaded this video and luckily I watched it before I tried to pour water on the flattened sodium metal. Thank God I saw this video first or I would've destroyed my living room!

No...not a swimming pool. It would actually react more slowly...and having it stick around longer is more dangerous. Swimming pools are cleaned with the addition of NaClO (Sodium Hypochlorite...bleach). This compound is made by bubbling chlorine gas through aqueous sodium hydroxide. The addition of the relatively small amount of sodium hypochlorite makes the pool slightly basic and less conducive to the reaction with elemental sodium. For something as unwanted as elemental sodium, the last thing you want is a slow reaction. Also, sodium hydroxide is caustic and harmful to human skin (even moreso than sodium hypochlorite)...and you don't want to swim in what is essentially lye water.

You actually have a basement? and get fed bleach and crumbs? all that and without having to work for it? you are a very lucky person...why I wish I was in your shoes, over here the 51st year of the 7 year drought has literally killed all plants and dried up all water bodies(and jobs too), also the yearly flooding has taken away all the topsoil so even though we saved the seeds nothing grows. I have almost rooted myself on a hot, dry and barren patch of soil that has been submerged by the floodwaters, surviving on photosynthesis alone, which is very meagre due to the amount of sedimentation of the water..its really hard here.. and so cold....plus its hard to operate my laptop under all the heat and dust and the water is bad for the electronics while the cold saps my battery...I have to hug it close to my body to keep it warm but it only makes the heat even more unbearable.

Yes, I knew that sodium reacts easily with water due to having only one electron in it's outer shell. But I just learned the mechanical process behind the speed of the reaction. The sodium actually melts and forms tiny spikes in the water that give it a lot of surface area then it reacts with the water losing an electron thus forming Na+ ions which repel and that creates the rapid explosion along with the H2 burning. Here is the research that talks about it cen.acs.org/articles/93/web/2015/01/Sodium-Potassium-Really-Explode-Water.html

crushing reactive metals like this should have only been done with a blast shield and proper PPE. Alkali metals can form superoxides on their surface and either pressing that into the bulk of the metal, or friction with organic materials (oils, paints, etc) can explode. And of course they explode when they come in close contact with water while molten.

Robert Szasz The superoxide is mainly on older pieces of sodium and his looked pretty clean. The risk with superoxide is when trying to cut it, it forces that superoxide into fresh sodium and causes a reaction.

ton of questions. If a metal is that so soft and sensitive to water what can it be used for. Why does it react to water as it does, why explodes when gets in contact of an other burning metal, why does it react to oxygen so fast? Thanks for the video, very interesting.

@lajoswinkler
@lajoswinkler 7 жыл бұрын
Nobody will ever collect enough of francium (not even a visible grain) because it has an extremely short halflife of radioactive decay. Even if you could, it would vaporize because of the heat it selfgenerates. We've so far clumped few tens of atoms in a spot. It's also quite possible it would not be more reactive due to some relativistic effects inside its electron cloud. Facts are: cesium is the most reactive metallic element, and lithium is the most powerful reducing metallic element.
