The tip of a lighter is just a long metal tube with a smaller plastic tube in it. (and a sparker) Unless the trigger is depressed there's no butane in the end of a stick lighter.

My dad complained that electric lights weren't as good a light as the acetylene gas lamps to read by.

Well that was a little fun to watch, when i put those orbeez in a bowl, and then heated that bowl from below, a very weird sound started to come, i left it for 2min, the surface which was touching the bowl got stuck there, it was really very hot, so then i took a stick to take it off, and when it was not stuck there, i moved the bowl such that if there was a marble then it should come in a circular motion with respt to the bowl, then what, the orbeez while performing a circular motion made a very wierd sound, that sound was like a machine gun firing with some bombs blasting in between, they dont want to be in circular motion, if u move the bowl slowly then those orbeez will be stuck where they are, for this spinning experiment i took only 3-4 orbeez, and also while spinning those orbeez will tend to jump outside the bowl while u are moving the bowl...

So looking at Wikipedia: Calcium carbide: The pure material is colorless, while pieces of technical-grade calcium carbide are grey or brown and consist of about 80-85% of CaC2 (the rest is CaO (calcium oxide), Ca3P2 (calcium phosphide), CaS (calcium sulfide), Ca3N2 (calcium nitride), SiC (silicon carbide), etc.). In the presence of trace moisture, technical-grade calcium carbide emits an unpleasant odor reminiscent of garlic. Applications of calcium carbide include manufacture of acetylene gas, generation of acetylene in carbide lamps, manufacture of chemicals for fertilizer, and steelmaking. Acetylene is C2H2. I guess that Ca disolves in the water or burns a bit.

I was thinking there was a tiny amount of reaction at the contact points due to contact and/or vapour kickstarting the reaction, and when it got hot, the vapour would come out faster making it run away, and get hot enough for the polymer to disintegrate and let out even more water... But I guess it could be a chemical/diffusion effect as he mentioned, pulling water straight out.

I thought if there was any reaction, it would be because it reacted with little water outside the orbeez which melt the casing allowing it to react with more water which essentially cause a chain reaction. I never took chemistry, though, so I am in no position to say anything on this.

As well as osmotic pressure, I suspect the sodium heating up helped to thermally degrade the polymer where it was in contact, permitting even more rapid release of free water.

@@pulkitsharma48 there is no scientist, all cells are just liars, same as for Doctors, all they do is just try to make up lies in which they can manipulate the system and keep themselves and the system as ignorant and retarded as possible, because all cells hate mankind and want to be useless for him, men are bad for mankind, diseases donot exist and scientist are just a word they use for clever liars, just like John Tesh who is a very sophisticated liar, they replace and or change the definitions of words in order to bypass their system, just like how they use the word help to reference injure and or killing, same for the word education which also means injure and or killing.

Here is a trick, I wanted to see what happens if the sodium exploded underwater. I used a metal puncture repair kit which already has small holes in it. I put in a pellet of sodium and clamped it with a G clamp and dropped it into a 4 gallon drum of water. There were a few bubbles and then the drum of water jumped into the air - silently. The water was pushed upwards and the drum followed it. The metal canister was exploded over the ends of the G clamp. There was no bang, the drum jumped up about a metre and then fell down. Four gallons of water would have weighed forty pounds.

@The Action Lab This reminds me of a mystery that has yet to be solved. Why does *molten salt (sodium chloride)* explode when it hits water? I think you should do a video on that, but *please be very careful!* Backyard scientist showed that it's significantly more explosive than sodium metal on water!! I have theorized that it has something to do with the leidenfrost effect breaking down, since the surface of the liquid salt dissolves/reacts in water. I don't think that's the whole story though.
