Dandelions are regularly portrayed as a noxious weed that is unsightly and bad to have in your yard but believe it or not these little guys actually serve a big purpose when it comes to the health of your soil and spring wildlife.

Yeah he came up with a lot of malarkey on why to have a ugly yard didn't be a lazy person's delight this guy here they don't Benifit the yard anymore then the grass clippings and you'll have a yellow spotted yard instead of a nice green one that looks good yard without them are so much better looking and the grass seems to grow thicker and more uniformly but he did make a convincing argument to be lazy and not get rid of them didn't he people usually do that when they don't want to put in the effort

@@donnieharness2When I was little, I loved the yellow flowers across the lawn, thought they were beautiful. Not until "smart adults" told me they were ugly did I decide they were ugly. As to your point about being lazy ... I work my a$$ off in my yard and garden to make everything as wonderful as possible (and it's absolutely therapeutic). But why would I work and spend money to destroy something that is actually good and beautiful?

This year I’m not using any weed killers. I’ll still fertilize my lawn. I’m so sick of being concerned of what my neighborhood thinks. I’m 50 and I just don’t care whatever they may think. I find the yards like in this video to be much more beautiful. Yea!

Right on! I’m 52 and I gave up about 7-8 years ago!! I want a natural lawn, not AstroTurf. I keep it “long” and almost never water (I live in Michigan). It looks intentional, not painstakingly manicured. My new next door neighbors have adapted to my way of thinking and I’m hoping it spreads. Keep it up!

I have a huge section of yard that had previously been a horse pasture, and after that, a cornfield. In the last 2 years I've stopped mowing it in May, and seen 1000s of dandelions pop up. The quality of the soil in that area has seen a night and day difference.

In my area (middle Georgia) the Dandelions begin blooming around Christmas and are nearly gone by now. They appear to be a good source of food for the early emerging insects and human foragers. The trees don’t provide pollen for the bees until well after the Dandelions here. We don’t have a large number of the classic Dandelions here though, we do have a huge crop of Coastal Dandelions. These bloom later and last all summer. The flower stalks reach @ 3 feet tall with multiple flowers per stalk. They are also edible, but I don’t find them as tasty.

Dandelions are SUPER IMPORTANT FOR BEES! They’re the first source of pollen to show up early season for the bees. Don’t kill them! Most “weeds” are beneficial to pollinators. Big reason bees are struggling.

I love this info! I just "adopted" a Starling bird 2 weeks ago.... & had heard that they loved to have dandelion leaves & clover leaves (perhaps cuz of the aroma) in their nest boxes... so I went outside & found a few... brought them back to my Star... & she got happy & excited (& it was close to her bedtime, & she'd BEEN settling down for the night...), then she ATE one of the dandelion flowers (AND it's 4" long stem)... but THEN, she had tons of "happy energy" for the next hour... before calming down & going to sleep! MY reasoning, henceforth, was thus: "I have been drinking that bitter expensive Espresso for energy -- & I coulda just ate a free common dandelion or so, instead!" Ha!

The problem with dandelions is the leaves lie flat against the grass and kill the grass, leaving craters in the lawn.

They do this when the soil needs them however, once the nutrients in the soil improve, the leaves no longer stay flat but rise allowing other plants to out compete them. Kind of neat.

Useful for bees for us as a natural remedy and they are so beautiful beside they don't last long themselves so no need to cut them.

Not sure I agree with your take on dandilions. I do agree that dandilions are healthy eating. I also agree that you should not use poisons to kill them. However, dandilions are an envasive species (Europe) and none of our native species reley on envasives to survive. I personally have only seen one species of insect feeding on dandilions and that is the honey bee. The honey bee is also envasive and from Europe as well. Next time you see a native wildflower, butterfly milkweed, black-eyed susan, purple coneflower, look at all the insects that are attracted to it. Now compare that to a dandilion. Nothing is attracted to dandilions, just like nothing is attracted to a day lilly or any flower sold from big box stores. If you want to help nature please plant native wildflowers. They are just as beautiful as any of those big box store envasives.

@@ExpeditionHomestead you can get safe chemicals that are effective for control. I don’t see out of control yards returning to health through dandelion nutrient distribution. Interesting concept but I’d rather plant other pollinators rather than trust my lawn health to weeds. They also tend to kill a large footprint of surrounding grass.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment about dandelions. Dandelions are not necessary for early pollinators. This is a huge myth and you should correct your statement. Bees collect tree pollen well before dandelions and dandelions only serve as a fallback if other things aren't available. If you have flowering trees in your yard the bees will prefer that to dandelions 100% of the time. I pull my dandelions and maintain a weed free turf. But also ensure that there are other early blooming sources of pollen for bees. Maintaining a healthy, green, weed free turf is not mutually exclusive from ensuring the health and population of bees.
@ExpeditionHomestead
@ExpeditionHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
curtlawncare I didn’t say that it’s the only source for pollinators in the spring but it is most definitely critical in case other flowers aren’t available like you said. Unfortunately in many areas there are few flowering trees around. Exclusively on the topic of pollinators the most harm is done by the pesticides and herbicides that are sprayed on lawns, it’s an absolute travesty.
@McScott76
@McScott76 2 жыл бұрын
I think it greatly depends on where you live. Here in Ohio, dandelions are in full bloom long before trees even begin to bud. Maintaining weed-free turf might work in postage stamp yards in the suburbs, but maintaining dandelion free lawns in rural areas with large yards is basically impossible without lots of chemicals. I have 6 acres with about 2 acres that I mow and maintain as a "yard." Dandelions are just part of the natural cycle. It would be ridiculously expensive and harmful to the environment to constantly be treating all that grass with weed killer to prevent dandelions.
@michaelfisher7835

Have you ever stopped to think why having a perfect patch of curated monoculture turf grass is so important to you? Could it be that you're trying to achieve something that has little to do with any real benefits to you or your environment and everything to do with status? Maybe try buying yourself a sports car or something if status is so important. Why so much anxiety over grass? Just sayin'. This guy is absolutely correct about the benefits of dandelions. You just don't like how they look. And that's because you've been groomed all your life to believe that people who "care" about their property have golf-course like grass. So it's about you projecting your worth to your neighbors (and apparently judging your neighbor's worth on the basis of his or her weed control).
