1. Wash: 2:1 vinegar (pre-soak) + detergent (disinfects/preserves color/fabric softener) 2. Rinse: 1 unit of baking soda (quenches reaction > NaC2H3O2 > neutralizes odors) 3. Dry: Outside. Don't skip steps like others.

@@shamirsaborio9324 Yes, cleanliness is next to godliness. May see staph/MRSA infections otherwise. I suppose one could just use detergent, but not all are created equal. Persil is the best. Warmth + moisture = Bacteria's best friend. Shower before and after grappling too. Tea Tree soap/shampoo has anti-infective properties.

I wash my gis with distilled white vinegar and baking soda with a light amount of detergent because a lot of detergent actually makes your gi absorb sweat and bacteria and might smell worse then I just hang dry it after and my gis never smell bad.

Turn your gi inside-out when washing; it protects the colour and will fade less over time. It will also protect the fabric, especially if you're washing your gi with garments that have zips, buckles, etc. (Those garments - in fact, all garments - should also be washed inside-out.) And yeah - definitely wash your belt. Wash it with like colours though, so don't stick a white belt in with a black or blue gi... or vice versa.

Plain soap and cold water always worked best for me. You can always bleach it, as well. For others, Oxi-clean in addition to your laundry detergent works well. Of course, if you train on dirty mats, you’ll have a heckuva time keeping your uniforms white. In which case, I would recommend wearing colored ones. Often times, when I am teaching at other schools, I’ll bring a blue or a black one. I don’t want to potentially embarrass the school Owner if his mats are less than tidy, nor do I want to risk staining a nice white gi.
@soloban81
@soloban81 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve got a method that works really well. Wash you white GIs with OxyClean Whitening in Hot Water. Every so often use Mrs Stewart’s liquid bluing. Here’s where you gotta be really careful. Start the wash with hot water and the oxyclean and detergent. Add 1/4 teaspoon (like 4-5 DROPS) to 1 QT of water (an empty Gatorade bottle works good). Cap the bottle and shake it up. Slowly add the diluted bluing to the wash. If you have a front loader you can pull out the soap tray and dribble it down into the drain hole to add it to the wash.

I live in a barracks and lack the ability to hang clothes on a line. I stick my gi in the dryer with heat. I been told that they will shrink if you dry with heat, so I check them after about 20 minutes to see if they're dry.
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 4 жыл бұрын
If your gi is not preshrunk, it will DEFINITELY shrink in a dryer. Even if it IS “preshrunk,” it will STILL SHRINK in a dryer, albeit somewhat less. What I do is get a gi that is a “size up” in some way. For instance, I am a “big” A1, meaning that a brand new (unwashed) A1 fits me just right. When I wash it, it won’t fit me anymore. So, depending on the brand, I’ll buy an A1L, A1H, or A2, and then wash normally in cold water with a hot dryer and dry it all the way through, so it typically fits me well enough after the 3rd (or so) wash.

There's probably no advice for this. But my BJJ school requires that students only wear gear with their school's brand to class. So I have ONE gi that I bought from them. Their gis aren't crazy expensive, but they're not cheap either. I don't have the money to buy 5 of them at their price point to have new gis every time I need one. So I have to just wash this one to death.
@c0mputer
@c0mputer 2 жыл бұрын
A little late, but there are gis you can get that are pretty plain. Then you can have a patch sewn on by a tailor for cheap. The school should allow this. Unless they only allow you to buy gis from them, but I've never heard of that. I would bring it up to your instructor saying you need more gis but it's not easy for you to afford their's. Been advancing in rank these past 2 years?

@@gibbacool2009 yep. Good choice bro. I recommend watering down some disinfectant in a basin and then just let it soak for a little bit. Don't need to scrub it or even shake it. I also recommend sunning it if you are not concerned with fading but if you do that once every week or two thats 1000 times better than never washing it.
