Doc Watson was an American guitarist, songwriter, and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music. Watson won seven Grammy awards as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Watson's flatpicking skills and knowledge of traditional American music are highly regarded. Watson taught himself to play fiddle tunes on his Les Paul electric guitar. He later transferred the technique to acoustic guitar, and playing fiddle tunes became part of his signature sound.
He performed with his son, guitarist Merle Watson, for over 15 years until Merle's death in 1985 in an accident on the family farm.
Directed by Terry Allen Williams, Produced by Thomas Lofstrom
This series features progressive bluegrass and country music performed at the Telluride Festivals, and is available on DVD from TheFestivalTapes@gmail.com

Merle was a monster player, can't imagine what his playing would be like today had he lived. Tragic loss. Long live the memory of he and Doc.

My father picked and sang this version of Don’t Think Twice. Doc was the only artist he listened to who played it. When I told him it was written by Bob Dylan he was surprised. He didn’t like my music, as most parents don’t like their children’s generational music. But he did give Dylan kudos for writing a great song especially when I told him Dylan was a big Woodie Guthrie fan.
