At a nominal 1v gpu core voltage, and only pulling 100 amps (pretty low really, can get several hundred running through gpu)- means total resistance from negative to positive rail is .01 ohms. This is solder joints on board and on die as well as silicon resistance. Yes your cpu or gpu is really really very close to a dead short when normally running. This is why a real "short" on either is pretty much not repairable, it quickly burns up traces on and inside pcb.

This was a great video . You should do a small series in individual parts you check to trouble shoot cards. Then when someone ask question just refer them to that series. You get the views and don't have to deal with onslaught of repair questions. There aren't many English graphics card troubleshooting videos available. Thanks for the content!

Thank you very much, you reassured me. I have a computer that fell on the ground while it was working, and when I turned it off after it fell, it did not turn on after that. When I checked it, everything was normal, but the vga circuit I suspected that it had shorts, but after I made sure I found it a small resistance in vga and not outright shorts

Thanks buildzoid I learned this while putting together racing drones. It would beep all the time. So I would unsolder everything and rebuild it and it would still beep. I just said F it and plugged it in and it worked and Didn't know why.

C660 cap (from looks and C-designation (printed on the pcb) I heavily _assume_ its a cap) came off the board (backside) of my 980ti (EVGA SC+ ACX2 - ref design PCB) when replacing the backplate and block. It _seems_ to work, but I've been unable to find information and don't wanna push it until I've talked to someone's whom know what its for. Its situated right "above" the PCIE 16x socket locking tab, a cluster of caps and a few other tiny SMDs, right next to an IC marked "3A 2H 34B". Any ideas what this cap is for? Am I safe to overclock the snot out of it without? I haven't had major success resoldering it to the board, the pad on one of the sides came off with the cap.

I was working on resurrecting a 10 year old Core 2 Duo system with a 9600GT in it. GPU was getting super hot, even though I was only looking at the BIOS. The PCB was heating up. Clearly a short somewhere. I had some spare time so I brought out a multimeter, and found what looked like a suspicious capacitor; there was 0Ohm resistance to ground on both sides. So I found the rail the short was on! I don't have the right tools to fix it, and I was planning to run this system headless once it was all set up anyway, so the GPU went to be recycled.

We tested out our nice 5.5 digit bench meters in my EE class. Honestly, the accuracy of 2-wire resistance measurement is a joke below 100 ohms. I doubt there are many hand-held meters that do 4-wire measurement.

Can I get your opinion please? I was gaming last night and then my PC shut down with no warning. I thought it was the CPU temp protection so I let it cool off a bit and tried to boot. The PC wont turn on. The PSU makes a clicking noise like a relay and then nothing happens. I took the GPU out and turned the PC on and it booted without the GPU in so I ruled out the PSU. I have a Gigabyte 980 Ti. I think the GPU is actually shorted and it triggers the overcurrent protection on the PSU. I took it apart but couldnt see any blown caps or burn marks. Any idea what to test on the GPU to find if it has a short or not?

Qhick question about shorts on smd caps, if i put my meter in continuity mode and put a meter probe on each side of the cap and it beebs that indicates a short am i right. But does it mean there is a short when its in situe on the board. Or can some other componants on the board make some caps apear shorted.?? Or does it mean defo short, ive caps around my ram chips and they apear shorted. Two fets i found bad a got rid of the sgorts on the exr 12v but shorts still exist around the ram chips. Any ideas

Multimeters read resistance in continuity mode also, correct term would be to search for a 40000 count or higher multimeter, don’t really spec digits in electronic test equipment

The only point of continuity mode is the beeping, which is worthless in this case (and would get annoying really quickly lol)

Thanks for clarification, but what would it actually mean if i measure the vcore inductors (LR22) on both sides to ground at 0.5Ohms and the card doesn´t display and the fan spins full blast (RTX A2000). Doesn´t that mean there should be a short in the 3 vcore vrm setup? Is it possible the processor is fried even if the other vrms show higher resistance (50-80Ohms)?
@tafadzwamusekiwa6593 ай бұрын
Fan spin with no display usually is caused by faulty vram on those cards, try testing using mods and see which vram is bad display should be through the iGPU

Do you know how much voltage your meter applies to measure resistance at various resolutions? Quick maths says it's probably not more than a couple hundred mV at this resolution, but I'd still be too scared to touch a graphics card with anything other than voltage mode :
@volodumurkalunyak46513 жыл бұрын
Handheld meters generally apply low curent on resistance mode (1mA on 2kOhms range, lower on higher ranges) and read voltage on the leads to apply Ohms law and show resistance.

This became for me obvious when i instead of just listening started to pay attention to the display of my fluke. Especially when i noticed different resistance readings for different gpus(and other circuits with soldered cpus/gpus) while continuity is always beeps. It can be much more intuitive if only continuity can change it's tone in respect to resistance.

Just like my good old Avo8, you just need to see if the needle moves, who cares about the reading, if it aint supposed to move and it does, then there's a problem or visa versa... took me years to stop getting pissed at my first DVM because I had to actually look at it when doing this sort of fault tracing. I could see the avo on the edge of my vision, which could pickup the needle twitch... ahh the 1980's were fun :-)

And here I were thinking that you were going to talk about how the test voltage for continuity mode of the meter can damage components like the GPU. Since continuity mode and resistance mode on a meter usually operates differently. The resistance mode usually outputs a small current (usually 1 mA) and measures how many volts it needs to push that current, and from that it can work out the resistance, this usually being fairly small voltages. While continuity mode usually forces out more current (sometimes up towards 10-20 mA, this is so you can test LEDs in the field), and more voltage and can risk damaging low voltage chips. (A lot of meters happily output a few volts as to be able to test LEDs. Though the GPU and its less then half an ohm would require amps for it to reach damaging voltages, so that isn't really something a multimeter will be able to provide.) Though, continuity mode on most meters start beeping around 30-200 ohms in my experience. So most modern chips and power delivery systems will look like a dead short as far as the meter is concerned. So yes, using continuity mode is not anything but annoying.
