You do bring up some good points I'm sorry that it didn't work out for you. it really just depends on the franchise that you work for. Kona Ice is not the best when it comes to job security when you are just a driver. Some of these franchises only have two or three trucks and not many ways to move up within the franchise. Primarily the only way to move up is buying your own truck and right now that is very expensive and in most cases you'll have to relocate as well. And to help with not getting hours in the winter, they have recently come out with a coffee truck. Called traveling Tom's coffee truck. My franchise was lucky enough to get one of the first ones and it is pretty freaking cool.

Ive been a driver at a Kona Ice franchise on the East Coast on and off for 7 years now. I love my job. I left one year for a bigger company that paid better and ended up returning to Kona Ice because I missed it so much. However, I do get Winter where I live and thats when the franchise shuts down.... So your point on job security is understandable in a place that gets winter....

Making this video was so hard to do. Because I loved the job. It was bittersweet. I still miss driving the truck late back from a late event, Kona in hand, wind in my face. It’s just not a good job when you need security.

You made some good points. Different jobs fit different people. It does seem that the management you work under may make a difference. For the last 12yrs I had a seasonal job only working 9 months a year but 3 out of those 9 months we made more than half of our income for the year which made it easy to be off in the down times, if you handled your money right. It was straight commission though. The biggest problem I had was the company didn't keep up with modern products and never seemed to keep enough inventory which meant if we didn't have it to sell then we didn't make any money. Also the owners son was a spoiled brat that got privileges well above the rest of us and did only half the work, so that was frustrating.

I feel like this was a very long way to say a job wasn't for you. That's cool, but as a fellow Kona employee - I 100% disagree. I'll concede there is a difference between franchisee ownership mentalities, your respective bosses should have been more open in the interview - But after your first franchise, did you bring any of these concerns / questions up when interviewing in the second franchise? Did you discuss your availability like, you couldn't work on Mondays for example. Regarding pay - it's a different beast from McDonalds that is open year round - Kona, as a small business franchise has different realities - they don't get a lot of demand for ice in winter - They have to really "attack" summer business, they also have to be mindful of things like the weather - McDonald's won't get rained out some day. I feel like some of this is on you for not voicing any of this in pre-season or in interviews (I'm assuming you didn't or you'd have mentioned it) Also - last I checked, McDonald's employees don't get tips - but Kona does. But one last point, the golden rule: if the business doesn't make money, then the employees don't either. If you had two events in a day with maybe 2 hours in-between them, why should you be paid if you're literally not working? Did you spend some time driving the truck through neighborhoods getting some business? Getting some tips there? Or did you just want to be paid despite not bringing in any revenue?

@@QuasiKojack "Time you are dedicating to the business" By doing what? Are you going through neighborhoods or parks selling ice or are you just playing on your phone? I'm just not going to agree that sitting on your butt doing nothing deserves compensation

I work for Kona Ice Lake Travis in TX and we do get paid for breaks. I love the job but the, but they are wishy-washy when it comes to scheduling events and kiss butt gets better events. But the job it self is awesome especially when you have all the supplies and the trucks are in good condition. Here in Texas it is hot as the sun. Communicate isn't so good with one of the franchises I work for so call your event and verify so you don't drive out there and there's another truck or 5hey cancelled didn't call headquarters. And breaks are good for study time for School. You are right though there are dead times it's like being a teacher. But way funnier and you get tips which is a bonus. 😁
