I have a 2008 ford focus all i use are motercraft filters. Original engine and transmission i just hit 495k miles. I do an oil change every 5k miles with motercraft oil. So ill stick to the motercraft.

I agree with you, Donaldson. It has more threads because how heavy/big it is. I would have gone with Motorcraft, but that glue is hideous. I hear a lot of complaints with glue coming off. & seeing it in the oil. 👍

There are many instances where a larger filter can be substituted, I will always go for the biggest one possible as more capacity is always better - the donaldson filters look pretty solid, I’ve never seen them before

Thanks, Pete and Mckenzie. The Donaldson is well built and clean. The Motorcraft was just sloppy. I agree with Mckenzie. A bigger filter offers more filter media. God knows that V 10 has plenty of oil to filter. Over the years, I know guys who find larger filters that fit their applications. Ironically, they usually found a larger Motorcraft that would fit their Dodge or Chevy engine.

If there's something I can take from these videos where an aftermarket is compared to an OEM, it's that in most cases with many applications, OEM filter is never a bad choice, but there's several aftermarket filters that offer better for less.

The only reason I use a large version of a filter is for Oil capacity. My car uses the same filter that a Lawn tractor uses, but with 4X the oil. Due to that, instead of a FL910 I use the FL1A or equivalent by Purolator. Cost is exactly the same. I also like the larger filter for lower restriction and higher flow rate with the same micron rating.
@WhipCityWrencher

If it fits sure, the FL1A is almost an inch bigger in diameter than the FL910, and about 2 inches taller. Thanks👍

They changed the number of "points" or flats on the end of the can on the 820s a couple years ago and the old cap wrench won't fit the newer ones, probably when Mann + Hummel took over.

In the "bigger is better" contest, the Donaldson definitely would be the choice. The one question mark is the bypass setting - if the Donaldson is in the same range as the Motorcraft, you definitely get much more from the Donaldson except for excess glue which the Motorcraft wins. Plus the Donaldson has my preference of a coil spring and a thicker can(n)ister.

A lot of folks never knew that Ford/Motorcraft oil and air filters for Ford 6.0 diesels are actually Donaldson made in Germany 🇩🇪 as well. 😏🤷‍♂️👍🏻. Donaldson are for heavy duty and off road use because of all the dirt they hold to reduce field service intervals.

A larger oil filter will offer more dirt holding capacity because it was designed to filter a larger volume of oil. Unless the owner plans on yearly / extended oil changes for 20,000 miles or more, then there is little to no benefit in using it over the smaller one. Great video!

The big disadvantage of the Donaldson filter is that the center core has a straight/vertical seam instead of a spiral seam. Straight seams are more susceptible to splitting in extreme oil pressure situations. The American manufacturers that use steel cores use the spiral seam. We remember gm cars that had faulty oil pump pressure relief springs....

I think the Donaldson is a better made filter. If there is a benefit to that much larger size, double pretty much, should have lower internal resistance to flow because of more area of media and more holes for the oil to flow, which to me means the oil pump is working a little less trying to push oil thru the filter, then the engine. Probably could go 2 oil changes at least on the Donaldson filter.
@Chiefgeargrinder
@Chiefgeargrinder 7 ай бұрын
IMO bigger is not better. Depends on the application. Put your thumb over a garden hose you increase pressure without increasing volume. Too big of a filter can cause a significant drop in oil pressure. A person brought me a 2011 6.0 PPV Caprice that they were convinced the oil pump was dying. They changed the oil sending unit 3 times and couldn't get rid of the oil light. I took off the Napa filter and put the oem pinhead ac Delco on it problem fixed.

All that sloppy excess glue on the motorcraft immediately disqualifies it with me. Dammit, that drives me crazy. I'd use the Doanldson for sure. My only concern would be if the extra long case would hang too low and below the chassis line. if it does not, use it, if it does, you could get it caugh on something and that would be very very bad, and I would suggest finding another brand. I like those filtrons but you can't get them here. But if there is enough clearance, use it with confidence.

On this Particular Comparison I would use Donaldson over Motorcraft. Donaldson has more filter paper then Motorcraft and is bigger. Motorcraft Oil Filters can be a Hit or a Miss. Motorcraft oil filters do have filter paper to filter full synthetic and High Performance Engine oils like Royal Purple, Redline, Amsoil and Liqui Moli. But everything else inside is cheaply made. On 2015 to Present Ford Mustang GT the Ford Racing Filter is a Hit and Motorcraft Filter is a Miss.

That Motorcraft filter sure has a lot of GLUE on it. As i stated on one of your previous videos, Mann and Hummel (purolator) has a problem with quality control in their manufacturing. Employees are not doing proper quality control checks and either people or computers are not applying the proper amount of glue to the product. Might be smart to go with the Donaldson filter, Morocraft is not cutting the mustard any more!

I wouldn't use an oversize in this application because the oversized filters are Heavy-Duty/Application Specific filters that are pretty expensive special order parts that don't seem to be all that efficient, I'd just stick with the standard size since they can be easily found at local department stores and parts stores easily and for as little as a few bucks if you want something better for that application I'd use a Fram FE2.

Whip you are ole so right. The Donaldson is the way to go. I do like the elongated holes and silicone anti drain back valve of tthe Motorcraft. The amount of threads in the base plate goes to the Donaldson. I love upper bypass valves, so that goes to the Motorcraft. Center tube goes to Donaldson for the use of numerous holes verses louvers of the Motorcraft. Filtering media goes to Donaldson because of the amount of filtering media used compared to the Motorcraft. The compression spring definitely goes to the Donaldson for the use of a coil spring over that crappy leaf spring of the Motorcraft. The Motorcraft has a very sloppy glue job compared to the clean Donaldson. The canister goes to Donaldson. The Donaldson is what I would use if it were my vehicle.

Bit confused by these two filters. Is this Donaldson new old stock as the EEC ceased in 1993, became the EC then the EU in 2009. I can’t decipher the date, could be 2021 but sometimes the first number can be the year. The Motorcraft seems so sloppy could it be a Fake?
