Donna Summer: The Queen Of Disco Music
Donna Summer had an indisputable groundbreaking career which rightfully earned her such titles as “First Lady of Love” and “The Queen of Disco”. Although most modern music fans know little about the personal mental anguish caused by her record label induced sexualized public persona. Faith and her undying willingness to survive in the music industry allowed Summer to evolve beyond her original disco origins and maintain a diverse musical sound that claimed her a US Billboard Top 40 hit every year from 1975 to 1984. She would go on to earn a total of 42 hit singles on the US Billboard 100.

@@ebonix33 Whitney was not the Queen of Disco, it is hilariously ignorant to say that. Whitney is a fantastically talented singer no doubt. She is "The Voice" and the best selling female artist of all time. I love Whitney. HOWEVER: Whitney is NOT the Queen of Disco. Her music DOES NOT infuse denotative Disco elements. Donna's whole career was built upon disco music and her music ACTUALLY reflects the style of disco. The word "Disco" doesn't even show up on Whitney's Wikipedia page, for example. She is overlooked because most of her hit songs are from the 70's. Most or 95% of people hate music from the 70's. I'm one of the few people that loves music from the 70's. Everyone says how great 80's music is, which I don't really care about. I prefer music from the 70's, any day over music from the 80's. Example: Donna Summer co-wrote most of her songs, Bad Girls is one of the songs that she wrote. It came out in 1979.

@@josephvalenzuela311 It really depends on which groups one looks at. Can safely say that over 75% of Baby Boomer and early Gen-X (born ~1963-1966) music fans are crazy about music from the 1960s-1970s. They don't much like the synth and formulaic pop sounds of the 1980s. As for disco, many/(most?) music fans turn their noses down on this music genre and dismiss it totally. Which makes it all the more remarkable that with this factor and today's scenario of very little physical product is sold, Donna's massive and quite pricey CD box set was sold out well before release. Shows that there is a dedicated fan base out there - not quite as large as the fan bases of 1980s pop 'divas' of course but it's there. Plus, Donna has had exposure to the young audiences, such as being a guest artist/judge on the highly popular show American Idol (finale season 3, 2008).

She was known as the Disco Queen and she never really got away from that monicker. And music moved on. She just never had that same level of fame and success again. And I don’t think it’s really because of anything she may or may not have said. Like he left out that there was a huge backlash against disco music and people who sang disco.
@halo2d

Red Velvet I’m old so I know all about the disco backlash. I also know how much this country doesn’t like people who are openly religious. And they like their women sexy. She had moved past disco to pop and had success. That lie is what kept her out of the Hall until she passed. And that when the same people who blacklisted her “loved” her again. We can agree to disagree but even mark twain said “the lie makes its way round the world before the truth has a chance to put its pants on”

KtG I don’t think being openly religious is a problem. I also think thats very different than what they say she said. It was a double album so she really just moved a million but in those days you didn’t have many formats in music. For her, it was LPs and 8 tracks. The inclusion of CDs and cassette tapes in the early 80s led to a big sales explosion in which albums such as Whitney Houston’s debut took great advantage of.

Here's the conclusion - we still don't understand her impact and greatness. I also wonder how she transformed from sexy disco Diva to religious housewife. Is it wiseness or desperation? Do a video on Lisa Fischer! Her backstory almost brought me to tears. That woman... her voice is just so rich, like it sounds like rich chocolate. I spoke to her over Instagram dms and she’s honestly such a sweetheart. She’s 61 now, and her “peak” was in her early and mid thirties. She’s one of the few backup singers who somehow found the way to fame, but ended up choosing to be behind the scenes, as a backup singer again. She’s a jazz queen now, but started off as a classically trained opera singer. She chose the way of R&B, but many people say that if she’d followed the opera highway, she would’ve been one of the most amazing, talented and famous opera singers of our time. She’s amazing, and I absolutely love her.

Donna Summer deserves to be recognized as a legend, she is just remarkable. I’ve been lip syncing “Last Dance” for about a week straight now.

The Summer Musical on Broadway was really great. It told her story and played all her wonderful hits. She was an amazing artist. Gone way too soon. Such a talent!

A shame that these tributes don't mention her writing skills. She wrote or co-wrote most of her hits and albums. She wasn't just a singer. She also recorded almost every album in 1 or 2 takes. They called her the one take wonder.

I was 14 when I first heard "Love to Love You Baby" & instantly loved it...not so much for the overt sensuality but because it was just so different from anything I had ever heard. I enjoyed each hit that followed during the next 3 years but when I heard "Hot Stuff" it sealed the deal. It was so rare to hear a lady rock that hard! Fast forward to 2020 & I still rank Donna as one of the top 3 most influential female artists on my musical tastes along with Stevie Nicks & Pat Benatar.

If I could be an artist, it would be Donna Summer. My debut concept would be Donna Summer inspired. She just oozes glamour but hedonism. Rihanna gives me the same vibe for some reason. Ugh I stan.

I feel a lot of people sleep on her post disco material that she done in the 80s, but imo “this time I know it’s for real” and a bunch of tracks on Swhftm deserves much more attention
