Building a CNC plasma table from scratch finally after many-many months has come to an end. After some steel work, fabrication and welding and months of head scratching and trial & error in the software and hardware department I'm glad to say it's finally finished. This video shows you the very first and awful test cuts with horrible results we encountered in the beginning. But cut after cut the machine got tweaked, each following cut got better and better and finally it works as it should. I learned a lot in the process in the making of this table and have to thank my buddy for designing and building it. Cheers, Blackloop CNC!
I hope you enjoy the video! New 4x4 Off-Road UTV video next week and thanks for watching!

Glad you posted this. I see so many that install such setups and show nothing but nice clean cuts and everything looks perfect. But this shows there are a lot of things to setup and get working right before any of those perfect cuts begin. This is more realistic in my opinion.

Hi. I work for a company designing building and repairing large CNC Plasma Tables. First I’d like to say this is an awesome homemade table build. I noticed, in the video, it appears you guys are using lifter stall force to determine your plate height. If future upgrades are an option, I would suggest using ohmic sense. It is supported by most controllers, and natively supported by Hypertherm by simply using different consumables. It is much more accurate and provides better consumable life. Also, in the powermax manual, hypetherm provides cut charts for: arc volt values, gas pressures, material thickness, pierce height, cut speed, etc. These values aren’t perfect, but they are a great place to start from when tuning your machine. Great job guys!

Put plasma mass cable directly to the metal sheet for more reliable result. Add some liquid borium from an agriculture shop into the water to rise pH. It will prevent against rust.

This build wasn't a typical "point and pull" where you easily pull the trigger b/c you knew what to expect. This build was like the others in many respects, but it seems the "tech" aspect was somewhat new. Like you said "I learned a lot..." which is a good thing; especially regarding technology which drives much of what you'll build. Great series Donn. God bless.

About that power source, remove the cover (if you don't care about the warranty on it...) and take the 12v fan off the power rail it uses, and put it on the 12v line it outputs, so it runs when the power source is open. That design (at least 3 different boards so far) always seem to fail after a while, and the fan doesn't work anymore. Because it doesn't always start with the source (it uses a thermometer inside), it's difficult to figure out when it's supposed to work or not. Just my 2 cents, it is after all a fire hazard, since the power source can catch on fire, as a result of that. I never swapped my fans, they were decent enough, but other people also change the fans for more high flow units. Source four 3D printers and a few other installations using that type of power source, in both 12v and 24v flavor. It's a simple modification to make, so i think it's worth the effort.

Make sure that the steel plate does not flex when the torch touches. If it flex you will have misfire or wrong distance. Another tip. As the electrode/nozzle gets older you might need to raise the volts a bit to maintain full THC function. The ground is also very critical for the THC function. Ground to the plate if possible.

And you’d think that a 3 axis CNC machine would be easy to make. My first machine was a plasma table, I feel your pain. The building of the mechanics is pretty straight forward, it’s another world to get it to be running. I would have built a router/mill first had I know lol. Excellent work!

Nice to see Plasma been built and FINALIZED ;) - Our project with my brother has seized for lack of time&motivation I quess... I quess we even have all needed parts even and the table has been used as milling table already so those axis are functioning. Plasma conversion takes just too effort compared to everything else. But someday ;) Nice video of trial and error!!!

little tip, add in curve in to the beginning and curve out to the end of pockets and arcs, noticed the flat spot on the doughnut you cut from the 12mm plate. the curve in and curve out prevent overlapping the code and cut areas so the circle wouldn't have had the flat spot on the outer perimeter and it moves pierce locations away from feature lines so you don't happen to blow through the edge of a shape in a thin sign or body panel

I enjoyed the series. Your build closely resembles my ideas. We have the Hypertherm 45XP but no CPC installed yet and no machine torch either. It is good to see the OpenBuilds controller working with a plasma table. I wouldn't mind going with GRBL/Arduino based system for other CNC tools, but the EMI is concerning for plasma. I may go with LinuxCNC and Mesa boards (if they ever come back in stock).
