Felling dead spruce trees and hauling timber with homemade 4x4 timber trailer (with Forstman hydraulic crane), pulling the trailer with my homemade 4x4 UTV (utility vehicle) and splitting the firewood with my homemade log splitter. The felling was filmed in the beginning of November thus the absence of snow in the first part of the video. I'm also modifying the slide on the wood splitter by adding taller sidewalls so the already split firewood doesn't spill over the edges as much as it did before. It is working almost as well as I want but there are some upgrades that are definitely needed. But all of that next year. Stay tuned for future videos and thank you all for watching. Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

The weakest link in the chain of operations necessary to process firewood is when you are using the chainsaw because that is such a low-powered machine compared to the log processing trailer and your four-wheel drive vehicle. Anytime you are on that chainsaw you are wasting time so ideally you should invent a machine that can chop your logs to length much faster than a chainsaw. A portable lumber mill Maybe?

If you're getting a new motor/pump for this machine, maybe you could use the existing motor/pump to operate a little conveyor belt up that ramp? :)

Everyone seems to be suggesting a conveyor belt. I would design something like the track system of a tank where there is a central sprocket system and then have the slats attached to a chain. You can then attach angle iron "catch" like every 16" to allow for cut pieces to collect then move up the conveyor.
@mikebell9166

I really like the splitter! It's working really well now. I'm not sure it needs a conveyor, not for the 2 meters or so that the wood travels, but higher sidewalls seem likely. All in all, this is a really effective combination, with the UTV/trailer/loader and splitter all working decently well.

@briandolbec37
@briandolbec37 Жыл бұрын
It is possible to power a small sort of escalator by the main hydraulic ram doing the splitting. A small spring loaded flap that pops up to grab the wood, folds flat when newly split wood passes over it, when the ram retracts pull the flap up via cable pushing the wood up, comes back down during the next split... Anyway, that is the basic idea...

Honestly at this point i would just add small motor, one wheel, conect them with bike chain, and weld small tabs/ paddles on the chain every so often to just pull wood up the shoot. If motor is too much, make one way paws, put them on bar and connect it to spliting piston so each time it retracts, it pulls the chain. It can even be similar to pullcord like on small engines to start them.
@famousamoso7
@famousamoso7 Жыл бұрын
I had the same exact thoughts to the conveyor into the piston as it would eliminate an additional motor/power requirement of this.

Make a *small* "dirt berm" [approx 1ft], for the splitter to sit on, and lower the angle of the chute. Get your dirt for the berm from the location where the crates will sit. Should still be easy to back the splitter up onto the berm and to swap out full and empty crates. Just a thought. Btw, Merry CHRISTmas.
@poprawa
@poprawa Жыл бұрын
That's stuupid. He would need to lift every log extra 1ft. Storage crate lowered by 1ft is awesome idea tho, as it is lifted by equipment, that doesn't care or get back pain :>
@DanKoning777
@DanKoning777 Жыл бұрын
@@poprawa // Clearly I'm not suggesting he make the berm the exact width of the splitter, and in the shape of a box. The total berm width should accommodate the splitter and Donn, and be sloped [regarding the side he stands on]. Remember, he made the hydraulic lift that he stands by adjustable so there's room +/- to accommodate this. FYI, "stupid" is spelled with only one U. Before you say: _"I meant to spell it that way, it should've been obvious"_ please understand, the total width/shape of the berm should've been obvious as well. [edit]: Merry Christmas as well.
