A look at some of the reasons why you find so many baby graves in these old Cemeteries through out these mountains. These people had some tragic times before modern medicine came in. My husband and I were talking this past weekend about our ancestors and all the sacrifices they made to build this country. The hard times that this country was built on. If our ancestors could look a hundred years ahead they would be shocked and sad I think. I’m praying for our country and really appreciate this video that shows us how far we’ve come and how thankful we should be.

I remember watching my Grandmother take a teaspoon of turpentine ... yes turpentine! She also crushed asprin and mixed it with lemon juice and put it on the rough patches that were on her elbows and heels. Tree sap for cuts, which actually does work. Nettle tea for arthritis and gout. How many of her remedies worked I have no idea but she swore by every one and lived until she was 97 and saw a Doctor maybe 3 times in her life. I miss her ✌

❤ The turpentine was ingested to kill internal parasites. I believe some people still do that remedy nowadays, but instead of taking it straight up, they soak sugar cubes in it and ingest it that way.

Donnie Law, the white man's Story Teller. In the Native American culture, the Story Tellers are held to such high regards and have high standing in the community still to this day. My grandfather always said even the Chiefs and War Captains looked up to them because they were so valuable to Native cultures. Their stories kept our history and culture alive... without our stories no one would remember our history and culture. And naturally, without knowing our history, we would make past mistakes over again. I hold you in high regards my friend Donnie Law. Thank you for your stories. Aho!

A very sad subject indeed, Donnie but you covered these wonderful but tragic folks well with the gentle respect that you always give them. Women would have ten to fourteen kids and maybe three would make it to adulthood. I don't think modern women can even fathom dealing with that! Smallpox, typhoid, cholera, German measles, malaria, and yellow fever killed many young kids all through the US, but the mountains were hardest hit. Dr. Walter Reed, the man who figured out how to deal with many of these diseases was a southern man too! But he was born too late to save the first kids that helped to settle there. Look when you walk through a southern or mountain forest. Stones don't stand themselves upright, especially if the ground in front is sunken in a little! Or maybe it just looks like the ground is sunken. That's one of our ancestors buried there from long ago. Say a little prayer for them before you leave. Thanks again Donnie for this little walk through the Appalachians. I always enjoy them!

I remember remedies that would get a parent arrested now! Lol! I used to HATE the whiskey, honey and lemon juice! My mother would pour that crap in my mouth too. I remember one time I had a cough and I couldn't have been more than five because I wasn't in school and it was one cold, winter afternoon. This was a extra good up load today Donnie. We just might have to know these herbal medicines, and we should learn as much as possible about ginseng , yellow root, Mullen, self heal, and blood root to name a few. It’s sad about these graves unmarked or no names on them, so people could know. Like you said the Lord knows where they are and who they are. I have walked the Appalachian trail and walked or bicycled hundreds of miles through the small communities in West VA Tennesee and NC. Beautiful country. I Seen your comment just after I had commented about how people are so cold these days and how I wish we had more people like these. They had compassion back then. These days people don’t care. I seen it last week when we took my two year old to the doctor bc he was sick. Just bc one nurse was having trouble swabbing my sons throat another one thought she wasn’t being fast enough and she was going to do it. I got between her and my child. No way was I letting someone like that near my sick child. Especially when I heard how cold she spoke about doing it. I could feel the frustration emanating from her. Me on the other hand I try to be nice to everyone. We need God again. God bless us all.

Thank you, Mr. Laws, for all of your beautiful stories. Many of us, as adults, forget the importance of continuing to learn. The saying, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”, is attributed to the American philosopher George Santayana, and is very important to remember. Many of us forget that lesson. In your videos, you bring back to life, the importance of the lives of those who have gone before. I enjoy your videos immensely! I would like to see ine about family life and school life on these "chear" mountains. It makes me sad to thunk about the toughness of 4he lives they lead trying to raise and provide for their children. These people were very much in need but had to learn about going to bed hungry every night abd not being able to sleep due to the pains. It breaks my heart whenever I see ir here of these precious souls.

Another great story. So many of us take things for granted. It is great that there were some doctors who had the compassion to practice in the remoted areas. People today do not realize what the average life span of people used to be and the mortality rate of children just a few generations behind us. Had a lot of friends who were avid "sing" hunters

Great video , our Ancestors had a tough life, whether they were coal miners or farmers or just trying to live. I don't think a grandfather or Grandmother on both sides of my family didn't have at least one child die. More so on my Dad's side in Appalachia. Thank you for covering this, most people don't realize how long it was before doctors and nurses started coming into the mountains to treat people and bring the new medicines to help.

Wonderful presentation Donnie! Hey Donnie have you ever had Ginseng tea? You scrape a bit of the root into small shreds and place it in the bottom of a tea cup and pour hot water on it. Let it sit for a minute or two then enjoy! Ginseng is a wonderful tonic for the lungs and a mood lifter. It is a wonderful herb! I now have a little Tennessee woods in my backyard and I look all the time for the Ginseng to pop its little leaves up! Speaking of plants, I have so many little plants popping up on the property and I don't know what they are yet. Maybe some are medicinal. It is so cool living here. I love it.

Hi Donnie, this is a good video on Appalachian illnesses and medical practices. While doing genealogy research. I found a Dr. Moses Clemons in Jackson, Kentucky. His mother was a Cherokee Indian medicine woman. She taught Moses about Cherokee medicine starting at age 11. When he grew up he started a medical practice in Jackson. He was unlicensed, but practiced Cherokee medicine. This was in the early to mid 1800's.

Another good history lesson. Thanks for keeping the history alive, Donnie. A lot of those old natural medicines work better than some of pharmaceuticals available today. Back in about 2010 or 11, I had pneumonia. The medicine that the doctor gave me wasn't doing much for it, but when my sister gave me some kind of herbal stuff, I finally started getting better.

You are right! I got some good salves from the Amish that I use regularly. Knowing how much I use them, I have gotten the recipe & will be making some as soon as I collect enough of the herbs. The Itch-X worked on poison ivy with one application. Plantain on a dog bite that wasn't healing, looked better the next day & completely healed in 2 weeks. Amazing!

They come through the North same thing people sometimes try to get stones from these graves and more than many a times I have been fortunate enough to find folks doing this and I just say you don’t want to be removing them stones they’re graves they’ve been blessed and I sure hope you pray real hard for first my dogs here will be following you and never mind the disturbance of the folks trying to be continuing to be at rest. Mind w you these days it’s harder to get about but word travels fast and so do the dogs. So many of us have taught our families and well some folks run but the grandkids and family dogs surely have kept them the done their best sometimes even bringing the rocks back and giving it a blessing for those to continue resting on in peace. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻💫
