As an Aussie I've been a Ford man all my life. The demise of Holden saddens me greatly. In Oz, Ford, Mopar and Holden people put shit on each other all the time, but if anyone of us break down it's always the Holden guy helping the Ford guy or Mopar guy helping the Holden guy etc. Aussies love performance V8 cars. Yes we are loyal to our brand, but we are street machine supporters first. We relate more with the U.S than Europe. Call it a colony thing.

I know this is a year old but... I reckon it was probably if not the best thing about our car culture; Just putting shit on each other and having a laugh. With my parents growing up as "Aussie tuners / street racers" With my grandpa owning a 71 torana and grandma owning a 82 falcon it was always the shit talk amongst the family that made us a family. We're all gear and rev heads. When I was born, My mother had a really nice clubsport with my father having an AU falcon and well we all know how that goes (Which he now owns a mustang) But at 16 (now 22) I got my very first VY II Commodore and my sister well... she got a nissan silvia and that broke my dads heart HAHAHA but I'll always remember watching the Bathurst and all the V8 series screaming at my dad and sister that ford sucked and Holden was always superior HAHAHAHA I think myself as what they call "the future generation" will miss the most is having my kids not have the same experience with what I had. Shit sucks :(

Few figured this out, but I had a father that worked ten years in GMH Elizabeth. He raved about working in secret rooms to design the headlining of HQ's and all sorts of probable bullshit. Anyway, what I did learn from being in the army and travelling across the country was that it was easier to get Holden parts in SA, and easier to get Ford parts in Victoria.

As an Australian, and someone who lived near the plant, and talked to a number of the people there (from the floor, to upper management), I'd have to say that this video is about 30% of the story, and about 1/2 correct. There's so much more that happened, but I don't expect you guys to know any of it. Thanks for bringing at least some of this story to America, I really appreciate it. Some of the 5,000_ people who called the Holden plant their lives would thank you too. Even as someone who's more in to Hondas than Holdens, I would have fought tooth and nail to keep that factory there, employing Australians and producing unique and useful vehicles til my dying days. Those people deserved to be there, and GM had no fucking idea what the Australian market wanted, which was proven after they axed the Elizabeth plant and started importing the Opel Insignia, calling it the "New Holden Commodore". Imagine if GM axed the Camaro and imported some random European sedan, and rebadged it "Camaro" and then expected every American to welcome it with open arms. That's what happened to us in Australia. It doesn't even matter than the car was more powerful, or fuel efficient, or had the same towing capacity. The Commodore wasn't a spec sheet, it was an Australian designed and manufactured vehicle, made by and bought by Australians. To feed us some Euro car with the same name was just rude. Even Ford had the decency to axe the 'Falcon' namebadge after they stopped making the car in Australia. It really makes you realise how poorly managed GM is, and how the faster they fold and pull out entirely, or just completely bin their management and rehire, restarting from the ground up, the better America, and the world will be.

fredmackay Many Americans were pissed off when GM got bailed out in 2008 and proceeded to do the usual corporate bailout gig of laying off thousands and giving the executives. Their quality has increased since then but I won’t ever buy a GM car simply because they’re not worth my business. Perhaps Holden could have better survived if they were allowed to spin off as their own domestic brand. Let Holden live as a domestic only manufacturer in Australia until they gain enough capital to start exporting again. Although that would mean competition from a former part of GM and American exporters of cars only really care about their domestic divisions and to them foreign markets only exist to make their domestic products better

I love Holdens and when your buying a Holden people want a rear drive V8 with a manual not a tt V6 like the “new” commodore, GM fucked Holden with changing what we had to what they wanted. In the commodores Australian built life it never had a 4cyl engine because people don’t want them. Also the union party were demanding higher pay for people on production lines and some cracked over $100,000 a year for putting a car together. This is for donut

One thing that wasn't mentioned was how GM had the profitable (at the time) GM Holden purchase Daewoo, aka GM Korea, which took up a lot of Holden's resources. Then the influx of relatively low-quality Daewoo vehicles to Holden's lineup like the Barina (Chevy Aveo) & Viva (Chevy Lacetti -- aka the reasonably priced car) did little to boost Holden's reputation for quality.

@tmmtmm
@tmmtmm 4 жыл бұрын
@@Cammac8 Commodore Utes are pretty compromised from a utility perspective - can only handle 500kg in the tray due to IRS, and if you get one with a hard lid they are even less practical in most ways than a hatchback or wagon. Falcon ute is better due to live rear axle (1200kg load), but trades some of it's sportiness away for it. The biggest sell of the Commodore/Falcon ute isn't actual practicality but rather bogan street cred.

@tmmtmm
@tmmtmm 4 жыл бұрын
@@dukeboreham2782 The limitation is not the rear springs compressing under the weight, it's the strength of the suspension arms and monocoque chassis. The suspension design is exactly the same as what is in the sedan/wagon and not designed for carrying heavy loads. If you put >500kg in an IRS commodore you risk buckling/breaking the suspension arms and chassis, even if you fit super stiff springs. There are a few funny pictures floating around of Commodore utes with hectik camber on the rear wheels and laying chassis on the ground after the suspension arms gave up under the load. Holden made a '1 tonne' version of the ute that came with a box tray/bed, live rear axle and leaf springs if you wanted more load capacity (>1000kg as per the name) - sporty it was not. The girlytruk crewman also came with live axle and decent load capacity if i'm not wrong.

Thanks so much for the post. I have a 2007 HOLDEN CALAIS HSVi VE V V8 ... lots of letters, I know. I purchased mine on special order and it is a one-off. It is badged in the engine bay [HOLDEN SPECIAL VEHICLE INDIVIDUAL]. It cost me $75,000.00 brand new and I have never ever had any trouble with it. My model also won the prestigious Australian car award in 2006, WHEELS CAR OF THE YEAR. Your post, and many other reviewer's posts on the demise of HOLDEN, makes me angry every time I see what GM in the USA had done to our national icon. It took away around 200,000 jobs from Australians and as you stated, now there are no cars at all being built in Australia. There are so many Australian billionaires in this country that I have no idea why they just all couldn't get together and save HOLDEN and give GM "the flick". I look forward to the day when HOLDEN will come back. My own car was serviced today, I spoke to the staff about this issue and one Lady told me that HOLDEN had been in her family for over 70 years. Her Father worked for HOLDEN for over 40 years, she's been working for HOLDEN for over 20 years. She has 2 HOLDEN's and now all they are really doing at my local dealership is servicing Australian made HOLDENs, they are hardly selling any of the American and German imported and re-badged HOLDENS. Australians do not want other country's cars calling themselves HOLDENS. I think that this is a great "kick in the teeth" to GM in the USA. Mess with Aussies ... we'll show our disgust by not buying any of your re-badged cars! My car has now increased in price as it is not only rare, but also a one-off. I will never sell my HOLDEN. Again, thanks for the post mate. DM

Being a Aussie and a owned my share of Holden’s, I can tell you that to me Holden started its slump when in 1979 it ceased product of 2 iconic lines. The Holden Torana and the mighty Holden Kingswood, here in Australia there was a tv show show called Kingswood country, the Torana was the launch platform for a few Aussie race driver. One of biggest was a guy named Peter Brock or as sometimes referred to as Peter Perfect. The Torana was a mid size car which could be purchased with a range of motors, from 4 cylinder to the 5litre V8, I owned a Torana for 12 years and wish I could of kept it, so for me GM decline started in 79.

I've thought about this, and I think one of the biggest factors of Holden going out of business was that for many years, they were a one car company - the Commodore company. Sure they pretended to have cars in other categories like the Barina, Astra and Colorado. But it was obvious to anyone who cared that those cars weren't real Holdens. Did people think the Land Cruiser wasn't a real Toyota? Of course not. Did people think the Territory wasn't a real Ford? No. But nothing Holden made that wasn't a Commodore was ever really given the same kind of respect as they were just other cars rebadged (though at least the Captiva had a real Holden Alloytec V6 engine in certain models - kudos for that). Holden didn't do anything about this for years because Commodore was king and while it was paying the bills, the rest of the line-up was just a distraction. But in my opinion, Holden should have been using those good years to create some decent real Holdens in other categories. E.g. An Australian made hatch that took on the Corolla or Golf. Or an SUV that took on the CX-8 or Sorento. Then in the future when Australian car buying tastes changed, they would have been able to pivot. But what happened was the large sedan / wagon category fell out of favour for SUVs and Dual Cab Utes. What could the Commodore car company do? Tell Australia they were wrong and to please come back? I know there were plenty of other factors at play, and probably the biggest killer of all for Holden was their lackluster export market. But even if all that was in top shape, the lack of diversification would have got them in the end.

For those who don't know, the downfall of aussie cars essentially came from 1990s Labor because they removed the tariffs, citing "there being too many car manufacturers in Australia" as a reason. If the tariffs weren't reduced into the ground then we could still have those awesome cars and a good economy.

the fact if you didn't need the acres of space you could buy an Accord or Maxima or even a BMW OR Audi for about the price of a Calais or a Fairmont Ghia might have had something to do with it and the fact we made crap.Why unless you carried three kids in the back would you have bought an XR6 Falcon when for similar money in the nineties you could buy from 1997 onwards a WRX Subaru with Automatic or a 200SX Nissan or for about 10 grand more even a BMW 318is Coupe comes to mind or for the same price as an Aussie Sports Sedan whatever Saab Coupe Turbo 900 later 9-3 or a Volkswagen VR6 Golf(when those existed in the 1991-1998 VW Range).A calibra,probe or celica would have been better as well or even a mx6.

It's mentioned that all the other car makers in Australia closed up before Holden, and while it's technically true that the Holden production line was the last to shut down, Toyota was actually the last to announce their closure after Holden said they would be closing the Elizabeth plant. Toyota didn't actually want to close their plant, but without the Holden and Ford plants also operating to keep enough volume for all the parts suppliers in the supply chain, it just wasn't possible for Toyota to stay open. The death of Holden overall was when Opel (and by extension Vauxhall) was sold off - Opel/Vauxhall were the main supplier of the right-hand-drive cars Holden needed for the Australian market (because the UK is also RHD and a larger market). No RHD GM cars to sell = No Holden.

The Falcon was a dinosaur that should have been given the bullet a decade ago. The FG-X was based on the same platform as the fucking AU from the mid 90s for God's sake. The XR6 Turbo was a hoot, but only in a straight line, and only in the dry.

Old Man In A Boxster lol get mad. The reason they were better was because they didn’t have engine technology that would date back to the 70s yet u whinge about how old the Falcons are? Ok then. Plus I think the whole point of an Australian car is for it to have a good motor (being ranked the highest on the list because that’s what actually drives the car), be fairly cheap to run, do long distances, sit a load of people, be reliable (unlike the pushrod princess’s over in the Bommodore camp) and a car in which u can have fun with like chucking it into a corner and kicking the rear end out instead of being all serious captain Bogan with lap times. It’s not a Ferrari mate. Besides that, Ford ticked all of those boxes all the way up until the end. As a matter a fact it sounds like you’ve never driven a Falcon. No wonder. Must be one of them lot. The crowd follower. I’ve driven an XR6 Sprint and it shows that they still knew what they were doing in the end. After all they sold out immediately.

The SSV was also available as wagon (estate), I think that was my favourite version, I owned one for a few years and genuinely regret selling it. (Sold it before I knew Holden was on its last legs, used value sky-rocketed afterwards).

Owned 3 Holdens over the years. A V8 VH was my first car when I got my license, a VL HDT about 6 years later, and eventually a VE 6.0 Calais. I'm not a car head by any measure, I'm objectively a nerd working as a weapon systems engineer for the MoD now, but there was something about Holden cars that was just epic and I never imagined while growing up in Oz that the Holden badge would be a thing of the past. Unfortunately I don't own a Holden now as I'm living in Europe, so an M3 was dirt cheap over here and I couldn't go past it for the price, but they're quite similar to top spec Holden's in many ways. I'll miss my old bombadoors, I got a lot of stick at uni from my other nerdy mates who drove their cheap and economic Asian cars, but not a single one of them got out of my VL without a big sh!t eating grin on their face. Holden were never meant to be world beaters, they were just meant to be good old Aussie hoon mobiles and they delivered in spades.
