One thing to keep in mind regarding these safety ratings is that the standards have gotten much tougher over time. A 5* car in 1997 would be a 2-3* car today.
@jsquared1013

This is what I was going to comment. ESPECIALLY with the small-overlap frontal offset that wasn't one of the main tests until around 2012. And I say this as someone who owns both an E36 and an S13 😅. It's also why the daughter-hauler is a 2018 Subaru Outback.
@TheGoodChap
@TheGoodChap Жыл бұрын
@@jsquared1013 front overlap was getting big as far as a consumer rating pushed by insurance companies at car manufacturers in the late 90s but yeah it wasn't the main standard but most car manufacturers were seriously figuring it out by the 2000s just to be safe. Now theres an even more extreme small overlap test which tests a car hitting a wall almost directly on the wheel well which is probably just as common as a small overlap but manufacturers weren't beefing up that part of the car resulting in terrible intrusion into the cabin but now most car companies are figuring that out pretty easily. The IIHS has done some good work, modern cars are incredibly safe, i think one downside of small overlap designs is I've seen footage of what should be tiny accidents turning into rollovers because of how beefed up that part of the car is now

@user-bt8xr5si9y
@user-bt8xr5si9y 2 жыл бұрын
No. Insurance Companies often see cars as "Economically Totalled" which only means that the Cost to repair the car is more then the car is worth. Them claiming a car is "totalled" doesn't automatically mean it is actually not saveable anymore just that it wouldn't be worth repairing the car. In modern cars very small damage can be Economically Totalled. My friend drives a 2017 Opel Corsa and he got into a rather small accident which damaged his rear bumper pretty badly. The problem is that the car itself isn't really worth all that much but in the back bumper where he was hit there were a lot of sensor and electrical stuff that got either destroyed or damaged beyond repair. Even tho his car basically only had a few cracks and scratches visually, internally there was a lot of stuff that was destroyed (nothing that would keep the car from running it still drove fine it's just not legal anymore) and thus his car was considered "Economically Totalled" even tho it still drove fine.

I was quite impressed with the results of the 86 despite it's small size. On two separate occasions, there have been large trucks that have hit me, one from the front and the other from the side, and all I got was body damage as a result for both. The Tacoma I have also did well in the IIHS testing. On another note, I once had a 7th gen Corolla that I loved, but after seeing it's crash test, I'm glad noone ever hit me (from the front). The dash was completely torn apart during it's crash test.

That Camaro would get no higher than a 3 nowadays. The A pillar collapsed and would definitely impact the driver space. It would be better if they added stars than redefined the whole thing. First thing I did when I found out my wife was pregnant was sell my 1978 XC GXL Ford Fairmont and buy an almost new 5.7l Holden Statesman... I loved that big bad Ford, but I (sort of) understand a thing called physics and wanted my wife and child alive. That al×ays bugs me, when people look at a car that doesn't crumple, and think that means it's safer. "Ah, look at that, it went 40mph into a wall, and you can drive away from that!" Much better from this perspective to watch than being in it. The new rating system between NHTSA and IIHS for new cars quite annoyingly factors in things like auto-stop and collision warning. Like even if the crash didn't even dent the car, it would be an automatic 3 because it didn't have pedestrian alert.

I completely agree, why should the safety of the driver if hit by a drunk driver be worth as much if not less then the safety of something stupid enough to get infront of a moving car. Any driver worth their salt should be able to also stop the car faster and sooner then an unreliable ultrasonic sensor.

Well I guess technically the collision warning and automatic braking would be under safety features so it kinda makes sense, but then again it would be nice to keep it the same and score all cars under the same conditions, because from what your saying a car could be really safe in a collision but if it doesn't have the sensors it could have a lower score then a car that has them but not be as good in a actual collision.

What? There have been and there still are separated numbers for driver, passengers, baby and pedestrian safety. The "EuroNCAP 5 stars yada yada" thing is only because of course we need an average sometimes. During commercials and stuff, would be hard to show off the whole chart with a dozen data points, so manufacturers want to show off the big number. But safety is a bit more nuanced than that. You can go to the NHTSA, IIHS and EuroNCAP sites to see every single test and number with notes from the engineers and all.

In high school I took an airbag to the face when a classmate ran into me (him: Jeep Cherokee, me: Chrysler Acclaim). Both cars total'ed, pretty dangerous thing, but that airbag punched the crap out of me. Had a little gasbag burn as well from the chemical stuff inside, and it pushed some glass from the driver side window into me. Good times. Thanks, Brandon.

Yeah, people talk about airbags all the time like they're the hero of safety, but IMO they're probably the worst of all modern safety devices. Seatbelts, crumple zones, soft/flexible interior panels, etc. do way more than airbags and unlike airbags they won't injure you worse in some cases.

I had a bad crash in my e30 last summer. The crash was a frontal offset impact on the driver side going about 30-50kph into an opel astra J going about the same speed. My car was a 1990 318is with a fully loaded trunk and 3 passengers which suffered minor injuries. I experienced memory loss probably from hitting the steering wheel with my head and a 2nd degree burn on my right foot because hot coolant spilled on it I suppose from a heater pipe breaking. Somehow walked out of the crash with my own legs after a passerby helped me open the door and recovered fully after about a month only experiencing mild knee pain for a couple more months. I think the car held up surprisingly well considering that it was developed in the late 70s - early 80s with no airbags. We were all wearing seatbelts and it seems like the engine and transmission did not enter the cabin. By modern standards it is very outdated and dangerous but that little box did well and i’m glad it was able to take the hit and save me. ABS alone would have prevented the entire crash from happening in the first place. Old cars might be well built but they are not safer like a lot of people think and as my crash demonstrates it also comes in very handy to have electronics preventing the crash from happening at all.
