I respect when channels take different creative directions, but I don't know about this. I still love James, Nolan, Jeremiah and the whole crew, but ever since they left the "schedule" they had with b2b, wheelhouse, money pit, up to speed and D-List, the channel seems a bit lost.

The Trust SSC will always be my favourite land speed record car because it introduced me to 3 things 1. land speed record racing events 2. jet powered cars 3. the first car to break the speed of sound The car was so iconic that there were pictures of it on my Physics book when we learned about speed

First "car", sure. A heavily modified F-350 broke the sound barrier back in the mid-80s. It was disqualified from the record because it crashed into a mountain and never made the reverse direction run.

Kyle G, get yourself a copy of Speed Duel: The Inside Story of the Land Speed Record in the Sixties by Samuel Hawley. Thi8s exceptional book covers the LSR duel between all of the drivers and teams of the 60's with deep dives into Art and Craig's efforts to outgun each other. Its a riveting book, one you won't put down. That your grandfather worked and drove for Art almost asures you'll learn more about him from this book. I got to meet Art during his tractor pulling days in the mi9d 80's, a company I worked for made ballistic composite body panels for BigFoot (we are based in St. Louis) and Art wanted to meet us to see a sample and discuss its use on his pulling rig. I always suspected he also wanted to see if the composite would be useful on his final LSR project that never came to fruition. Fun night at the old Checkerdome, got to meet a motorsports icon and get an inside look at pulling rigs, something totally off the wall for our team as our primary focus was SCCA road racing work at the time, besides the BigFoot stuff. PS: You can find the book used or via interlibrary loan at your local library, which is how I read it. Give your connection it might be nice if you can find a new or near new copy. Happy Reading!

Hitting over 140 sounds so easy, but it's a huge thing. Having no aero, I hit 140 and realized I lost massive amounts of traction, and I was actually encountering lift. Those that are pushing anything beyond that mark are amazing, but they're legit risking their lives. So massive props.

@trashrabbit69

Yep, similar to why trains haven't really been able to break the 180 MPH mark for the past couple of decades. Whilst possible, evidently by speed records; at such high speeds even something as heavy as a bullet train starts to slowly turn into an aerofoil and become unstable, difficult to maintain speed and traction, etc. Only rare and highly advanced examples like the Shanghai Maglev can achieve insane speeds with relative stability. Air is quite the finicky fluid.

I was a kid in the 60s when the jet cars came on the scene and the Beach Boys had a song about Craig Breedlove. The Blue Flame was my favorite land speed record car and the last one to set the LSR at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Minor quibble: the driver's name was pronounced Gabelich, gab rhymed with cab, not gabe. And the Blue Flame used a rocket engine, not a jet. This was the only LSR record holder that was rocket-propelled. (The Budweiser Rocket came later and never set an official record.) I sketched up a model of the Blue Flame I planned to build that would've used an actual model rocket engine. I planned on tethering it with eyelets onto a length of monofilament fishing line between pylons set some distance apart on an empty, level parking lot, like my high school's on a Sunday. I figured that might keep it on the ground and pointed straight. I drew the sketch over 50 years ago. One of these days...

Its important to separate out thrust vehicles, turbine powered and piston powered wheel driven vehicles. Danny Thompson who holds the piston engine/wheel driven LSR in Challenger II at 448.75, set in 2018. This is the same car, updated to modern standards that his father Mickey drove to the piston engine/wheel driven LSR back in 1960 at a speed of 406.60. That record had stood for 58 years! There has been a single run by Don Vesco in the Vesco Turbinator (turbine power/wheel driven) at 503 also in 2018. Vesco holds the current wheel driven (not the same as piston engine as his car was a turbine engine/wheel driven vehicle) at 4458.444, set in 2021.

9:00 + 9:50 I can't help but think these inspired the 1989 Batmobile. Maybe there are just limited ways you can design a chassis around a jet engine; but throw some fins + black paint and I'd expect to see Michael Keaton climb out. 🦇

I love the ssc, even though it’s run was decades ago, I remember in school seeing photos of it in text books when talking about physics and such. An iconic piece of machinery to be sure. I can’t wait till I’m finally able to live through the next record, hopefully reaching that 1000mph goal

I was at Daytona 500 a couple weeks back, and at the Daytona Hotel lobby they've got Bluebird, one of the more famous landspeed record cars. And after admiring it for a good few minutes, and thinking about what it must have been like, and reading the plaque about the car and it's designer, Donald Campbell (guessing this vid is about him), and it's the same guy I was reading about several years ago who died while setting the water speed record. Dude was just a brilliant, fearless engineer. There's a museum up in the Lake District in the north of England about him and his vehicles. Man was real life Sonic. Gotta go fast.

clearly just an effort to stretch the video out for more watch time by including ""records"" that are far below the actual records just because it is performed by a person of a different gender
