Man, I would love to see you guys talk about Steve McQueen. He raced anything with wheels. Motorcycles, cars, and his biography talks about how he modded a switch on his dash to turn off his license plate light if the cops showed up to one of his street races. He even drove the mustang in the famous Bullitt car chase.

I can get used tires, with 70-90% life left, mounted on my jeep for 30 bucks. Or free, if I call my friend who works at the competition from the place I get my tires and he finds the size I need. Doesn’t matter how much better new tires are, those prices are unbeatable.

I wrote an article about this a long time ago when it just happened. one of the most interesting things about it was that the differential looked pretty much brand new. Btw, before the fires and fall off of the stand, its engine and suspension was used by that doctor and a friend of his to race in the scca. both of the two cars that used the parts crashed and ended up killing the doctors friend.

I've known about the curse for a long time and also kind of took for granted and thought that everyone some what knew this story when I saw the transmission make the list for bring a trailer's top sales for 2021. I didn't know the car was partially parted out. Appreciate the info.

A little known fact is the car following Dean was driven by Bill Hickman. Hickman was the first to pull Dean from the wreckage & would later go on to drive the infamous black Dodge Charger in the movie Bullitt.

I only saw it was a 550 Spider Transmission and thought to myself, could only be the James Dean Spider. No one would pay that much for a normal 550 Spider Trans not even crazy people.

My first guess is that is the gearbox from the James Dean spyder. I remember seeing that thing on eBay in 2002 go for 25000! Edit: 1959 550? Max is slipping! Edit #2: It's a matter of time before Lil' Bastard resurfaces. Multiple people have seen it suspended vertically behind a false wall in the Bay Area. We all know what a Bullshit Artist Barris is. I'm guessing once a statute of limitations expires, Little Bastard will surface again. It's also noted Dean Jeffries (who built the monkeemobile) painted the stripes and 130 logos on the car. I have an idea part of the cars disappearance also has something to do with the feud between them as well. Both men are gone, but I'm guessing some sort of trust Barris has is also keeping the car hidden.

I've always been a fan of James Dean. When I was a kid, my grandfather had a lifesize stand up cardboard cutout of him that he got as a gift from a friend. It was later bent in half by my younger cousins about 15 years ago. Turns out it would have been worth alot of money today. I remember looking at it and just admiring how handsome he was (no homo). It was in black and white he had on a leather jacket was walking down the middle of the road with his hands in his pockets head turned about 60 degrees off camera. It was really cool. Wish we still had it.

Bill Hickman the famous stunt driver, The Seven Ups, The French Connection and Bullitt (driving the Charger) was driving the vehicle pulling Dean’s trailer. Mr. Hickman pulled Dean out of the wreckage and saw Dean breath his last. A video about Bill Hickman his life and career would be fascinating.

I would have like to have seen more about what evidence there is that the one sold was the actual transmission from the car and not some other transmission from the same model car. Was there a VIN number on transmissions back then or how was this one authenticated?

The transmission is actually In Zac baggins haunted museum in Vegas, saw it a couple months ago. I believe Porsche verified the serial number on the trans. I'm surprised they left that part out.

It is a very similar variant. The 550 and the Carrera used the 4 cam engine. Also, the 550 is an RMR layout, like the '48 356 Typ 1. The subsequent 356s had the same RR layout the beetle and 901/911 had.

I paid a mechanic to work on my truck since September. This past Thursday I went to find this guy and went to the location he sent me. Found nothing went to drop off location found nothing. Then tried calling no answer. Message him on how I wanted my truck back. He responded saying working on it. But now all contacts have been cut..... I'm so sad idk I'm out a truck and some money. Guys always go to a reliable company. Don't trust small people. Update month later found my truck, he was using it to his advantage, it's in worse condition than I left it but at least I have it. Now I will just do everything myself.

The story of where it ended up is interesting. I do not think Barris ended up with the Spyder. The wrecked vehicle ended up with a physician who raced Dean! Interesting.

Damn that’s crazy. When I used to work in the oilfields in Bakersfield, I used to drive past “James Dean’s Last Stop” which is an old gas station on the corner of Hwy. 33 and Hwy. 46. It’s a Texaco now, with a huge 30ft (I’m guessing) cutout of James Dean outside, if I’m not mistaken, and it has a bunch of cool things inside. I’d go in to use the restroom and SUPPOSEDLY they had James Deans’ pair of goggles or glasses that he was wearing during that crash. They were yellow-tinted. This is pretty interesting because he died in the backroads of my hometown. And when you said “Bakersfield” I kinda got excited lol

The car was not called “little bastard”. This was Bill Hickman’s nickname for James Dean. That is why it is in quotes. Hickman was mentoring JD into racing and away from his OTHER thrill seeking, well documented in “Joshua Tree 1951”. Bill was in the Country Squire following at a normal speed towing the empty trailer. James Dean died in his arms. Bill Hickman can be seen driving the Charger in the movie “Bullitt”.

Did anyone else notice that the car James Dean Purchsed was a '59 Spyder (3:51) and the transmission is from a '55 Spyder which either a small error on donut's end, a error from the reporter of the article, a scam by the seller or some how the brand new '59 spider had its transmission swapped before the engine break in.
