Fast cars and big movies are as American as Abraham Lincoln. From the Delorean to the Batmobile, superstar cars and the badasses who drive them have been woven into the fabric of American culture for over a century. What made Steve McQueen a legend in both film and autos? How did he come to love cars even more than movies, and what were his greatest moments, both on-screen and off? All that and more on today’s episode of Past Gas.

These new podcast non-videos make me regret all the times I got high and just listened to the video while I'd take apart the microwaves for my time machine. Clearly I should've waited for these ones.

The Great Escape really isn't that slow. I watched it like 10 times when I was a kid and remember the plot pretty well. If it can hold an 8-year-old's attention, it's not that slow. I think it's more exciting than Bullet, Dirty Harry, or 2 Lane Blacktop. It's just not a modern action movie. It's more of a drama, so the focus is writing, not excitement. But yeah, for sure worth watching.

bullitt is one of my favorite movies, i can definitely agree that outside of the car chase, the great escape is a lot more exciting

I think they’re really just stating that all movies of that era were written differently and when compared to the new constant-action action movies today, they aren’t quite as captivating for our millennial attention spans.

I have so enjoyed watching High/Low, and the D-List for years, but these podcasts have made me like the cast member's so much more. I always thought James was hilarious, but I have gained so much respect for Joe and Nolan. I am having a major back surgery in 4 days, and I'll be in the hospital for about a week with nothing to do but hurt. Now I can lay there, and be completely entertained and educated on car history. Thank you guys in advance. Keep it up, and I will always be a fan.

Great show as always. You quoted a guy from the Great Escape named David McCallum. Did you know he’s still alive and plays the Medical Examiner “Duck” on the long running show NCIS? The guy going on 90 and is a badass in his own right.

If there was a American Bond movie back in the day Steve McQueen would of been the perfect fit and he would drive a 67 light blue stingray.

Patrick Dempsey comes close. He plays the romantic lead on TV and in movies but his passion is racing. He has even raced the 24 hrs of LeMans several times and runs his own racing team. My wife and I met his about 20 years ago at a vintage race. He just wanted to talk about the cars and was excited to show off the race car he had with him that weekend.

I've been thinking about the Fast and Furious equal punches fragile masculinity claim. Consider this: Every actor of this caliber is a multi million dollar business usually including some personnel and agents. I'm no expert, but I imagine an agent has a difficult job landing good gigs, avoiding bad ones and preventing the 'brand' that is the actor from decaying because that'd eventually cost him his Job. It might be a real concern to someone in that position that the actor that is portrayed less badass in such a big movie might take a hit to his public image. So maybe the actors didn't insist on those rules out of fragile or toxic masculinity but the Agents out of economic concern?
