Rivalries are what make racing riveting. Mopar vs. Ford, North Carolina vs. South Carolina, Puralator vs. STP … and today, Richard Petty versus David Perason. Why did they wind up in head to head battles almost every week? How did their rivalry push NASCAR to the limits and save the sport from suffering the same fate as the auto industry during the 70s? All that and more on today’s Past Gas!

A note to the guys about the speedways mentioned early on - Greenville, Pickens, and Spartanburg are all cities in upstate South Carolina, and I'm going to assume Gamecock speedway was somewhere near Columbia where the USC Gamecocks are. I actually saw my first motorsports event at Greenville-Pickens, a demolition derby back when I was like 5

And "Sandlapper" is a term for South Carolinians from the coastal (i.e. eastern) half of the state since it has sandy soil as opposed to the red clay of the Piedmont.

Most of these racetracks still have the same names. I'm from the NC/SC stateline. It's cool to hear of all these places in Nascar history. I watch all y'alls videos and now I've been listening through all the podcasts. They help keep me focused during long hauls in an 18 wheeler. Oh, and idea for Nolan a catch phrase. It's kinda like his Be Kind. Like Racing, Keep it Clean, but Aggressive.

I loved this one, it since I was born and raised in Greenville and live in Spartanburg it was awesome hearing so much if our local history. I bet this is how Nolan feels talking about the drag scene in California. P.S. the outlaw class is awesome in that it's basically crude approximations of cars racing in the dirt.

I like how the swoosh sounds for the ad spots seem to be randomly dropped throughout these audio only episodes. Less work = less quality? I thought cutting out video was supposed to make editing this easier, not just get rid of the process. The stories are still great and a fun listen, just kinda disappointing when you guys don't seem to care as much about this show.
@jah_b
@jah_b 2 жыл бұрын
They spent two minutes setting up this episode with an increasingly intense soundtrack. I'm not quite sure what you're referencing here but the fact we have this podcast in the first place is a blessing. If you want video, look somewhere else. we were lucky enough to get any of it. It's a PODCAST.

@@jah_b It's called feedback, I don't get what's so hard to understand about that. Every time I say one little thing I get some fanboy licking the show's balls. I've listened to/watched every single episode of this show, most more than once. I love it. I'm giving feedback because I'm seeing a show I love slowly slide in quality. If you can't handle some random person on the internet having a minutely different opinion on something you both like, just get off of it dude.
@jah_b
@jah_b 2 жыл бұрын
@@siggy6044 it's not me licking the show's balls 😂 it's me having a basic understanding of the medium and general awareness of how busy these guys are with the other 3 or 4 shows the do every week. Your critique's been said a million times before and I'm sure it'll be said a million times again it's getting old.
@siggy6044
@siggy6044 2 жыл бұрын
@@jah_b A lack of understanding of the medium? Seems you have a lack of understanding of my critique. I complained about the drop in quality, despite a lighter work load. 3-4 shows a week, yes, when at one point they had 7. I'm not saying they don't work hard, I'm saying they cut back on some stuff to make other stuff better, and this show has done nothing but suffer in the editing department, despite a decreased workload. This show may also be a podcast, but look back at how many episodes have had video,and look at the drop in viewership since they've cut it. I know KZfaq doesn't represent 100% of the audience for this show, but it's their main platform. They addressed the reason for not having video, to lighten the workload, and I accepted that. But to have every audio episode have misplaced sounds, like Nolan randomly being bleeped by a wrench in this one, just feels like they rush editing the morning of posting every week. If your boss starts cutting your pay by 5% a check, are you still going to just be thankful for the opportunity to work and get a few pennies six months later? I see a slide, and I'm speaking out against it. Don't come at me just because it's still as good as it's ever been in your opinion.
@jah_b
@jah_b 2 жыл бұрын
@@siggy6044 you're definitely right. People that need pictures to stay interested will and have stopped watching the show. When it started it was the most asked for thing. The reality of the situation is they can't spend a bunch of money on producing a show that brings in almost no money... Or views comparatively for that matter. But the quality of what's being talked about is as interesting as ever. I hear what you're saying but to me I'm here for what they're talking about not the audio effects.
