So far, there’s too many scenes of an actress portraying her that looks nothing like her. I hope this entire documentary is not mostly reenactment with this actress. She’s pretty, but she looks nothing like her and it’s too much like unsolved mysteries style docudrama.

(Comment edited) after a lot of reservations that this was going to be a standard documentary, I’m pleasantly surprised that DONYALE LUNA SUPERMODEL (Nailah Jefferson 2023) has a much stronger second half, and it is a meticulous look at the first female Afro Futurist 🪐🌟 A woman who challenged racial constructs in many ways . A MINT original. As was said of Janis Joplin, “She was a casualty, not a victim. The difference is important.”

@@MissBartira The verified ancestry is her mother was half-German. Her maternal grandparents met in Detroit and her German grandfather's last name was Herzog. She was multi racial And most importantly that's how she identified herself. She was very clear about that and that needs to be respected over the one drop which I can scarcely believe is still alive in the 21st century.

Racial PTSD needs to be acknowledged. When your race is always used against you, it forces you to figure out ways of surviving and navigating through other's perceptions of you and the consequences that that holds. Her way was to avoid talking about her race. Really, the focus should be on why Yt ppl were obsessed with her race and how that impacted her. I don't blame her for how she handled her racial PTSD, I blame Yt society for making non-Yt people have to create ways to survive that mental torture. They other-ed her by making her a side show freak, then chastised her for the impacts of that racial identity torture.

Throughout her life and career, Luna claimed to be of various, mixed ethnic backgrounds, often playing down her African American ancestry since being a teenager in Detroit. Later on in her life she insisted that her biological father was a man with the surname Luna and that her mother was Indigenous Mexican and of Afro-Egyptian lineage. According to Luna, one of her grandmothers was reportedly a former Irish actress who married a black interior decorator. She would also claim to be of 'Polynesian' descent in high school as the common practice at the time was for immigrants and minority groups to 'give themselves makeovers to better assimilate into modern [American] society. She often made up tall tales to make her seem more grandiose, part of the character of Donyale Luna she began in her teenage years, including beguiling stories designed to shock or amuse such as losing her parents in a car accident and being adopted, or replying to the question of her heritage with the line "I'm from the moon darling"

It’s so funny when some non-Black people say a Black person looks “like they are not from earth” when they are beautiful - as if it’s so hard to believe Black people can be stunning and beautiful as well. I personally am shocked that these people have “never seen” a beauty like her. It highlights just how much their segment of society did not associate or overlap with black folks because they would have definitely encountered beauty like this many times over. That is really more indicative of their ignorance because I’ve seen this level of beauty my whole life across many shades of blackness. However, what I will say is that her lines, movement, and facial expressions absolutely made her exceptionally and uniquely adept to being photographed in a way that highlighted her beauty unlike many others much like a ballet dancer. That’s what I think made her stand out as a model.

Nearly ten years ago, I first gazed upon this goddess's face; it was one I could not turn away from. She took my entire breath away. Learning that she was the FIRST Black woman on a VOGUE cover and not knowing her name until then was astounding. Who was Miss Donyale Luna? The more I searched for answers, the less I found. Pictures were my only means of transportation into her life, but of course, they were only glimpses. I prayed that someday her story would get captured and brought to life beyond search engine collages. I nearly hit the ceiling last year when HBO announced that she would FINALLY be the subject of an overdue documentary. I wish Donyale was here to tell her own story, but I'm sure she wouldn't trade the Moon for Earth again if given the chance. In any event, my eyes will be glued to my device watching this come next week. I'm so excited!!!!

She made up ethnic heritages that weren’t fact. She was, basically, a liar who downplayed her African American heritage. Her mother was mixed black, her father full. The story I think we need here is a psychological analysis. Why did she live in a dream world? Why was she known for telling tall tales? Was their self hatred towards her race? What was her psychological diagnosis? That would be interesting to find out, as that was what made her so intriguing to others.

I watched the documentary and it was surprisingly heartfelt. It felt more like a love letter and an apology than a historical document but it’s better for that quality. Tragic what racial terror can do to a person. Also underexplored was the way her in-laws contributed to her premature death because of their rejection of her.

Agree - the documentary is overall quite a sad one, and leaves out many questions and answers, more like an exploration by her daughter to help her come to terms with her loss, growing up without her mother. Understanding how racism impacted on her life is important, and certainly it did, there is also the fact of her witnessing her mother shoot her father dead as a teenager and how PTSD would have played a part in her re-inventing herself and basically running away , this is understandable. Eventually it seemed to become a burden for her, I found the whole thing sort of heartbreaking, her life and role as a loving mother above all, cut short and wasted.

I watched Fellini's Satyricon years ago and was absolutely mesmerized by her singular beauty and magical movements though her appearance in the movie was brief. I tried to find out as much as I could about her which wasn't a lot other than some stunning photos. I am so glad this documentary was made and finally tells the story behind her tragically short life.
