So glad I was there for this performance, catching the Brothers at their zenith, in their prime, at the UC Santa Barbara campus lagoon on a truly sweltering summer day in 1980 (NOT 1982). I remember thinking I couldn't believe John Mcfee wore those tight black satin pants for the entire performance. All of us SoCal locals were in T-shirts, Op shorts, or less. Ha! Just wish Tiran had still been with the band. This concert was filmed for a then state of the art Laserdisc, much like the Kenny Loggins "Alive" show across town at the SB County Bowl from the previous summer of 1979, which I was also lucky enough see.

Someone said today, one concert they would have liked to see is The Doobie Brothers. I said I saw the in Boston in 80. They were solid. In 86, I was working at a major record lable and a Currier walked past my office. I said, Cornelius??? He smiled and said Yeah man. I said it felt like I just saw you in Boston with The Doobies! He said, yeah, well gotta pay the bills. I gave him a bunch of new releases to leave with. Real nice guy! Was a talented man.

McDonalds secret was that his falsetto voice was indistinguishable from his full voice and also learned to slip in and out without it being detectable meaning he had an effective huge range. He put it to brilliant use as we see here.

The lyrics tell the story of this desirable woman, who sleeps with many men but true love evades her. Real love with one special man is worth so much more and feels so very right. So he tells her to lie just a little and say that he is the only man that she ever really loves. This song is so amazing and has such an impact on the listeners. It’s a favorite of many fans.

On this day in 1980 {August 31st} "Real Love" by the Doobie Brothers entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #40; and on October 19th, 1980 it peaked at #5 {for 2 weeks} and spent 16 weeks on the Top 100... In reached #2 on the Canadian RPM 100 Singles chart and #10 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... The California-based group had twenty-seven Top 100 records; five made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, "Black Water" for 1 week on March 8th, 1975 and "What a Fool Believes" for 1 week in April 8th, 1979... They just missed having seven Top 10 records when both "Listen to the Music" and "Take Me in Your Arms" peaked at #11... I've said this in earlier posts, but without the Doobie Brothers, the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame is a joke!!!

I’m a performing musician, Original music and the cover gigs as well. Approaching steely Dan songs and ANYTHING michael does, Very very tricky to pull off even to a proximity of his raw ability. Talent like that is BORN. You can’t attain it otherwise and I’m considered an accomplished singer. I always thank folks for compliments on my voice etc, but in the back of my mind I’m on a chariot riding in my Caesar’s parade while michael Macdonald voice is whispering soulfully in my ear……”glory is fleeting dude, I however am eternal”.

@@Detroit1967 Nah I disagree. McDonald has written some of the finest songs ever recorded, was in high demand as a background/duet vocalist for decades, is a great keyboard player and has also had a successful solo career outside the Doobies. Tommy is a good singer & musician but McDonald is definitely the more talented of the two.

I think I like the Johnston 70s era more just because of the insane and unique songwriting on songs like ‘The captain and me’, ‘Natural thing’, ‘Greenwood creek’, ‘Another park another Sunday’, ‘black water’, ‘I cheat the hangman’, ‘travelin man’, they’re so odd with all the key changes or just the keys in general, they blow me away
@euanelliott36134 жыл бұрын
Even though the McDonald era Doobies were almost over here, they still created beautiful music which endures to this day. They would be gone by 1983, to reform with Tom in '87 and more success. For me, this was the best Doobies music, it's a shame that Johnston missed their huge success, his voice is iconic to the Doobies too.

Amazing how tight they were here. Many other bands disappoint in concert with unusual vocal pitch changes, skimping on guitar or keyboard parts, pre-recording their harmonies, etc. Not the Doobie's though. They do it all live making it sound almost exactly like it does on the record and that's a good thing in my book.

If I understand right, this was shortly before the Doobies broke up, too. One Step Closer was the last album they released before disbanding, and in many people's opinions not as good as the ones they released before it. However, there is some excellent material on that album, including this song, and I agree that they are tight here. To me, it's a testament to their resiliency as a band and to the talent of their individual members, that even when they were in their most divided state, they were still able to turn out great songs like this one.
