It does make me sad when people are like "you can't have this disability you're too young." Disabilities don't care about your age, they just happen.

This seems to be a common issue I see people in the disabled community bumping into and it makes me so sad D:

Yep. I get that with my diabetes and back pain, but age doesn't really matter - it's how it affacts your day to day life that's important and it needs tackling.

I hear this so often about invisible disabilities. Such as nerve pains that make it difficult to stand for long periods of time & people saying they don't need a wheelchair/disability sitting since they were standing fine just a bit ago or are too young to have problems.

I started having hip problems with I was sixteen. I was in a lot of pain and asked a woman in her mid-to-late twenties if she would allow me to have her seat on the bus because I have an invisible disability. She called me a liar and gave me this huge speech about how I should respect my elders.

I understand being weirded out by the name "Essential tremor". My anxiety is called "General anxiety disorder" which sounds like it would mean "a pretty normal anxiety disorder" but ACTUALLY means "Everything generally makes you anxious". Oh my gosh I relate so much to the "most nervous looking person ever" I was at an event the other day and I THOUGHT I was doing fine until an old lady leaned over my shoulder and whispered "You're doing great, hang in there" 😭Omg, I remember hearing about Steph's hallucinations! My heart was breaking for her at that time! (I think a really popular video would be "Drawing my hallucinations"... But that's pretty dark, ignore that thought!)

Oh no, I know that lady meant well but it sadly doesn’t help. I once had someone point out to someone else (while I was there) that I laugh when I’m nervous. I mean it’s true but don’t point it out. That doesn’t make me suddenly less nervous but now I’m also feeling self conscious that I’m smiling like a loon.

I have asthma medications that make me tremor. I was working as a floor Nurse and went to start an IV on a male patient. He had lung problems also, ans saw my tremor and didn't want me to stick him. I told him I was on a lot of the same meds that he was on, and we'd just have to coordinate our tremors! I got the IV in one stick! 😂🎉😂 Also, as a disabled Registered Nurse who did a bit of Psych Nursing. If ever you see something and Adam isn't there, or asleep. It helps some people who have visual hallucinations to take their cell phone, and take a picture. If what you see is not in the photo, it's a hallucination! Much love to both of you and scratch the Guinea Pigs for me!!

I can't relate to Steph's exact situations, but I am dealing with my own things. Idk there's something comforting in knowing about other people dealing medical related things and disabilities!

so just for anyone that might be helped by this: its totally cool to take a notepad into your appointments with you so you can note important things down. also asking your doc to go slow or repeat or spell stuff out is totally cool. this is your appointment and its best for you to go away from it feeling like you know what is going on. theres plenty of reasons a petiant might need/want notes, no one should bat an eye. also also the pharmacy is a great resource so dont overlook it. so many situations relating to medications or minor ailments can be solved with a quick call to the pharmacy instead of half a day on the phone to the GP. this is becoming a bit of a PSA but i think your video accurately shows a common healthcare experience. until you experience it, the perception of what healthcare SHOULD be is that you simply go to a doctor and that doctor will diagnose you with one condition that neatly explains every one of your symptoms and then you get your medicine and go home. the reality, as you know, is so messy and complex with years of appointments, referrals, multiple conditions with no relation, trying different medications and never coming away feeling fully satisfied. i've met so many patients clearly exhausted by it, who just want a resolution. i hope you, at your point in this journey, dont feel too worn down or overwhelmed. its a slow process but you arent alone. -catkins, from jail

My dad actually got DBS! A brief side note before i get into that though: Steph inspired me to finally try crochet after years of considering it only to back out. Making granny squares only at the moment, but it's made me really happy. So thank you for that inspiration! I've been watching your channel for a long time and have truly enjoyed every moment of watching both the old doodle date videos and art projects, as well as these new vlog style videos. Both of you have helped keep my own creative spark going at times I've really needed it, so truly, thank you both. I hope you always keep making art that makes you happy and inspired, and at whatever pace is comfortable and sustainable for you in that moment. [Content warning: DBS experience details below] My dad, who was in his mid-60s at the time, actually got deep brain stimulation surgery. He had Parkinsons disease, and had a pretty significant tremor for my whole life. It did work really well for him for a while! For the first while, while the battery was on it actually could stop his tremors, and he was able to sing like he used to again. A few years after, he developed a dementia related to Parkinsons, as well as some pretty severe mood swings (probably the dementia, but i dont remember.) The VA said that those changes were in some way related to the DBS. And when we turned the battery to half power and eventually off, my dad was much calmer again. I don't know how much it really is related, or how things would have gone differently with his dementia had he not gotten the surgery, but I'll say he never regretted it, and the first year for him was such a positive change that he never could have dreamed possible. I dont know it would affect someone with ET differently than someone with Parkinsons (especially considering he was over 20 years into a diagnosis and taking medications for it) but that was my families experience.

Thank you so much for talking a out this Steph! You're looking so well in this video, you deserve so much light and strength! I hate that it still is so stigmatized to be young and disabled. Even though I was diagnosed with my disorder when I was 18, almost ten years with it and 4 surgeries later, my family and some doctors don't like to lable me "disabled" when an adult, like 50-80yr old with the same history, is disabled. It's so frustrating! I am sending you and Adam and your little guineas happiness and health!!

Hi Steph, I also have essential tremor (& agree that’s a horrible name for it!), was diagnosed at a young age (15ish), deal with several other health issues, and I’m also an artist. So, I completely relate to what you’re saying & dealing with. It’s so frustrating at times, especially when it’s doctors saying stupid things like, “ Do you always shake when you’re nervous?” Of course, I’m not always quick on my feet in the moment, but later figure out what I should have/wished I’d said. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that you are definitely not alone. Thank you for talking about these things so others can feel seen as well. ❤❤❤

Steph is so strong and brave to deal so well with her health issues and to talk about them with us. I struggle with several health issues as well, and it feels lonely sometimes. I definitely relate to the wonky wrist because my elbow bends back awkwardly even since I broke it when I was in first grade. Sometimes it hurts a lot when I’m carrying groceries or propping myself up in bed. I also broke my neck in a car wreck when I was 16 and now I get pain when I bend it certain ways and sometimes I get dizzy. I have loads of other health issues. Oh! My mother had schizophrenia and she had terrible hallucinations. One day we got home from grocery shopping and she came out of the house coughing and shouting the house was on fire so my dad dropped the bags he was carrying and rushed in but there was no fire. She said she even felt the heat on her skin and the smoke made her cough. She once saw and man running at the car with an axe in a restaurant parking lot and scared my friend so badly she started crying. They can be so real.

Hi! I just got this video recommended to me entirely coincidentally, so it’s the first I’ve seen from you, you both (and the guinea pigs) seem lovely! I have essential tremor, and I’m 18. I’ve had it for around two years now? But I only saw a doctor about it in the past year or so. I know there’s actually a lot of young people who have it, too. It’s actually one of the, or even *the* most common tremor disorder there is. There’s probably a lot of people who don’t even know they have it, I know it took me a bit to figure out my shakiness wasn’t normal, and even then I noticed pretty quickly since I was already disabled and thought “actually, is this a symptom?” Nope, but a whole thing on its own! Essential tremor can also affect the vocal cords, so that *could* be another reason people think you’re nervous, if that happens for you, too. My tremor mostly affects my left hand, the right when it’s particularly bad, I get the leg shakiness too sometimes, and it affects my vocal cords rarely but it’s definitely noticeable and nervous-sounding when it does. My tremor isn’t bad enough for me to really want to go on medication (I hope that sentence doesn’t need a “yet” lol), plus I’m right handed, so there’s that. I’ve definitely been lucky on the tremor side of things, but it’s still so nice to see someone else who is young and works with their hands talking about it and bringing awareness to it! It’s wonderful that you feel comfortable to share these things (though do take your time if you need to, and know you don’t have to share something if you don’t want to!), it seems like your community is very supportive! Much love and well wishes to you both and your guinea pigs :)

She had surgery in both wrists to cut the bone bc it caused her significant pain, but maybe it's different than the one you were offered? Luckily my wrists don't cause me too much pain as long as i don't strain them carrying heavy things, but when I was still growing , like 12-14, i had to wear wrist braces sometimes

As someone who has a hypermobility spectrum disorder of some sort and who only learned about all the other medical conditions that can come when shabby genetics basically result in getting your connective tissue from TEMU (such as IBS, migraines, anxiety, wonky blood pressure shenanigans, etc) in my 40s, I can absolutely related to the "every time I go to the doctor we find something new." Except for me, it was more like every time I do a bit more research on hypermobility, it turns out that another random medical issue I have or once had turns out to be related. So I'm not a rusty bucket full of random broken bits. I'm a cohesively rusty bucket whose contents are the standard state for said rustiness. 🤣 But also, it's been great learning more about the condition and finding others with the same or similar conditions, because I don't feel like I'm just a "difficult patient" anymore. Nope. I just was born this way and it has and is going to have these impacts through no fault or "hysterics" of my own. Plus I get to educate all of my docs, because it's not something most of them learn anything about in school, other than maybe a brief section in one chapter in one class describing that it exists and that's about it.

Man this resonates so much with me. I’ve been trying to get a diagnosis (or even just an acknowledgment that something is wrong) for ten years. Migraines, joint pain, extreme fatigue. I looked at some diagnostic criteria for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and I have many of the ~ bendy ~ ones, particularly in my hands and wrists, so I suspect I, too, may have gotten my connective tissue from TEMU (your comment made me cackle!). Every doctor I’ve seen in ten years has shrugged and told me they don’t see anything wrong and my bloodwork is great so it •must• be psychological 😞 I did manage to get a diagnosis of GAD and start medication for that and I can’t believe how much it changed my life. My crusty joints and headaches didn’t change but at least I’m not terrified all the time anymore; gotta be thankful for the help I did get!

I find ladybugs in my room frequently and they bring me joy, my granny always said they were because I was lucky. 😊 I am looking to buy dogs with jobs soon, I will be very excited for your next coloring book. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia recently and seeing a specialist soon to deal with the pain, I understand dealing with disabilities and being young. It really sucks when no one understands how bad it can be and you try to explain, especially when it is invisible. The million doctor appointments and medications it can be a lot at times! We are here for you Steph!! ❤ Edit: my history with surgeries and things is always get second opinions! Bring the MRI to another doctor and ask as many questions as you can. Then do your own research! I had a foot surgery to get an extra bone removed to relieve pain, I went to 3 doctors to get different opinions. I did my own research before deciding to go through with it. It sadly didn't help as much as the worth of the surgery but I'm glad I did all the research before.

Tremors were the reason I switched to digital art. Got them when I was in middle school and found it difficult to draw on paper! Might be a fun challenge to try to create an artwork without the stabilizer and seeing how it turns out tremors and all!

I can understand the fear of getting the rarer sides effects from medications. I was put on 5 medications for my anxiety and depression and ended up with serotonin OD(aka serotonin syndrome). I almost died. After being in the hospital, the doctor I had took me off of 4 medications out of the 5 I was taking. Now I only take one and I feel like a completely new person! The doctor couldn’t understand why I was prescribed so many medications that interacted poorly with each other! I just wanted to feel better, so I didn’t question it. Now I see a different psychiatrist from a whole different practice and things are going smoothly now! Thank you so much, Steph, for sharing your struggles and your journey thus far! I didn't know it was possible to have a Tremor without having Parkinsons so I always thought mine was from being hungry or having low blood sugar, but when I checked my blood sugar it was always "perfect". So, thank you so much for sharing this it really has helped kind of push me to talk to my doctor about this instead of sweeping it under the rug. You have also inspired me to let go when it comes to my art and not worry about every line being straight to hide my shakes. Talking about my own disabilities is difficult so I understand your hesitation to post videos about it. I also feel you on the hallucinations that stuff is terrifying. I had spiders on the ceiling, but fire sounds worse. You are not alone in the younger and shaky group :D I'm 33.

Always happy to hear Steph be so forthcoming and honest with us, we love and care about you both so much!! I'm trying to hype myself up to go to doctors for the first time in years and try to get an autism diagnosis, and some possible hormonal issues sorted, and hearing that Steph has been able to find so much out in her own journey is really encouraging!! 💙 Would Steph be willing to talk about her autism/adhd (since they're usually pretty comorbid) in a video like this? If she's been through the diagnostic process it would be so helpful to me I'm so nervous 😭 And CONGRATS ADAMO ON THE SUCCESS OF DOGS W JOBS!!! 🐶💙💛💙💛💙

Oh man, i really connected with the hallucinations part. Since last year I've been on medication that also is treating neurological issues, and there was a period of time back in February that I wasn't sleeping properly and was super stressed and it caused me when I'd wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom to hallucinate stuff, the worst was when I thought a little shadow girl was in my bedroom, and also when I thought I had sliced my big toe in half (i did hurt it but not that badly). It's the craziest thing to go through, especially when it affects who you live with and it was hard to explain to my family why my brain thought it saw/felt what it felt. I can't change the dose of my medication cause the benefits it has outweighs the crazy shit it can do to me at night/when im sleeping, but I'm glad you guys were able to get it changed out/adjusted so that it isn't so bad :)

I have a cousin who got a surgery to put a thingy in his brain for his epilepsy when he was around 13-14 and it seems to work pretty well. It connects to my aunt's phone via a local signal and she can send his data to specialists who adjust the device to treat him accordingly. The only concern I have is that the battery wears out after 10 years so he has to get a surgery again to replace the battery. Hopefully 10 years from now they'll get a longer lasting one in there!

Thanks for sharing, Steph. I was diagnosed with essential tremor when I was just over 30. It's remained stable for 20 years. I also have it in my head which is kind of entertaining because people think I am disagreeing with them lol. I know you'll find a way to make the most of your career despite the tremor. Ps I can't tolerate the medication for the tremor, although sometimes I will take a benz⁰ for it. I am so proud of you!

I was diagnosed with juvenile onset epilepsy when I was 15. With that I had hand tremors/jerks for about a decade and mine were called cortical hand tremors and myoclonic jerks. Weird names but people think they sound so dramatic and worse than it really is with those names. LolI don’t know if I ‘grew out of it’ or it was finally finding the right medication but due to lack of sleep or stress (my triggers) the jerks and tremors come back but not the seizures. Everyone asked me why I was so shaking all the time so I learnt to be a statue around people and anywhere in social situations til that didn’t really work well so I learnt to not give a shit.

@doodle date Thank you Steph for being so transparent about your disability and experiences with doctors, referrals, and specialists. I was born with my disability so I am not sure what type they said I have or what studies and scans were done at the time. I used to have tremors in my legs, but now they rarely happen. I have to change doctors because my doctor had a health issue and will be using a company to provide services through virtual appointments. I don’t know if insurance will cover that. Have you had any trouble getting specialists or MRI, exams, or testing covered by insurance?

ladybug with so many dots its just Harlequin ladybirds, theyre not native to europe as far as i know and they arrived to europe from Asia. Sadly they're becoming more prevalent which means they do in fact keep fighting our native ladybugs. (and theyre winning xD) Ofcourse not all ladybugs that have so many dots are the ones from Asia, so its best to be sure before you try to "help"

My grandmother had an essential tremor since she was a child. Her mothers treatment was to take her to a funeral home to touch a dead person so they could take the tremor with them to the grave. This would have been back in the 30's. Traumatizing!! I am just now starting to see signs of ET in my 40's. Seems to be hereditary as many in my extended family also suffer.

I like having my husband in appointments with me too. But as he works full time it makes it harder. So I decided the best thing to do is to secretly voice record the appointments using my Apple Watch haha (perfectly legal to do btw you don’t have to inform them either - UK is a one party consent country) you could do this with your phone too. And this helps me remember things much easier (I have brain damage from nhs negligence and it affects my memory quite a bit which is why I do this).

Hearing about the many health issues... it just made me think, have they tested your thyroid levels? I assume they have since it's a simple test to take, but sometimes it gets overlooked. It can cause things like tremors, muscle weakness, difficulty of healing injuries, increased heart rate.. the list goes on. I only say this because I had this condition and it caused all of these symptoms for me and I had to go through and entire army of doctors to find out what was wrong with me. Edit to add: Thyroid stuff is generally not very scary in the grand scheme of things, so nothing to be spooked about in that regard.

I knew a person who had this "antenna" thing in their brain for Parkinsons and idk I guess it helped them a bit at least with that kind of tremmor, but obviously they had other stuff other than just the tremmor going on because the parkinsons. Later on they could sometimes walk by themself but nlt realiably, so had to use walking help and ppl to help walk short distances.

Thank you so much for sharing and posting this video! I have "ET", haha oh no the alien is I can see now!! My tremor has halted a lot of what I share online, I know it shouldn't but every video id get comments about it and thats ok I just get really self conscious when people notice my tremor, which in turn makes it worse. Especially in real life too. Nervousness certainly plays a huge part with mine, and like Steph - I'm nervous nearly all the time! Especially when it comes to videos and people etc... But again big thanks for sharing this video - I really appreciate it as I'm sure others do!!

1:05 that's an Harlequin (Harmonia axyridis) also known as Asian ladybug, which is different genus to the ladybug species that are common in Europe (Coccinella). It has been artificially introduced to Europe and its population is growing like crazy. Unfortunatelly they are a threat to our native ladybug species and their biodiversity, as they compete for the same food sources. You can tell harlequins them apart by the size of those white spots on their anterior abdomen (on our common European 5-, 7- or 11-spot ladybugs the diameter of the white spots is about the half of the anterior abdomen's height and covers the lower part of it, but on harlequins those are huge and cover most of the anterior abdmen) and the shape of their black spots on their elytra (spots on harlequins are far more irregular in shape). Harlequins are also more... globular, I'd say - coccinellas have a more pronounced "waistline" indentation between their anterior and posterior abdomen.

It’s kinda funny how you were talking about thinking of ET and a possible fix is to have an antenna stuck into your head while awake, like an alien brain probe lol. It all points to aliens! But seriously, it’s brave of you to share all that’s happening and it must be helpful to other people going through similar things. I personally think your art looks amazing with or without your tremor, your style is so distinct, I love it! Also anytime I see someone with a tremor I just assume it’s a medical issue related. Unless their face looks scared or they’re shaking, I’m ignoring it.

The surgery option is always scary! Much like Steph I had a condition where I was the youngest person on the ward by a solid 50 years. Disabilities and illnesses can hit you pretty much any time! I had surgery while I was awake, implanting a pacemaker. Most of the procedure was bearable but it's definitely not as easy as being under is.

I occasionally get hand tremors, I didn’t think it was that bad but it gets worse if I’m hungry or have done a lot of exercise and customers would ask me if I’m okay 😂 so I guess it is noticeable haha. I’m only 28 but I’ve had it for at least 13 years (more I think) that I can remember. And I was talking with my dad and he was like SAME! And our right hand is worse for both of us. Ironically I wouldn’t say my dad is the most constantly upbeat person but he seemed quite happy like a good bonding moment 😂 we both have a history of depression and anxiety so I do wonder if that’s at least part of the cause. But neither of us have got it checked. I mean he’s had his for like 40 or more years so I’m sure it’s fineee 😂
