Commander Keen was id Software's first big hit in the early '90s, and it stars an 8-year-old boy called Billy Blazkowicz who fights cartoony aliens and vegetable people with his pogo stick. And Doom II does not start with the Marine leaving Mars. Mars wasn't even in the original Doom. It took place on Phobos and Deimos (Mars' moons), and Doomguy got to Earth through a portal opened by the demons in Hell (after killing the spider mastermind).

2:04 Doomguy wasnt sent as part of a special team, in either doom 1 or 3. it specifically says in the opening blurb and in the manual of the original game that hes on his way to be court martialed for some unspecified crime and in doom 3 hes just basically a PMC working security for the base. also what about diemos (one of the moons) being sucked into hell itself

The protagonist from Doom I is the same as the protagonist in II and 3. In fact, Doom RPG confirms that the marine in RPG is the same as I, II, and even 3. Keep in mind that Carmack directed, produced, and programmed this game and it was published by JAMDAT and id together, making it pretty much super canon. If we are to follow the timeline using this information, then you play as the same marine through each iteration, up to presumably Doom 64 where you remain in Hell for eternity to combat the forces of evil. Where does that leave Doom 2016's protagonist? Oh, right, in Hell where all the tomes point to you being the same warrior who underwent the same events as in Dooms I and II. Doom 3 is a fickle beast, in that it's hinted at being the prequel to the series. I'm not exactly sure where it stands on the timeline, but since RPG confirms it's the same person then we have to incorporate it as such. Doom II RPG explicitly states that Stan Blazkowicz, one of the main playable characters, is a relative to B.J. Blazkowicz III, a character hinted at in the first Doom RPG. Some people think the Marine is B.J. Blazkowicz III, but it's only speculative as the reference comes from a log you find in game. The story resumes after Doom 64 in the new Doom 2016, where exposition reveals your untimely demise at the behest of Demon priests who trapped and locked you up in the sarcophagus, hoping you'd never kick their asses again...until now.
