Newport State Park, in Wisconsin's picturesque Door County, is regarded as one of the Midwest's best destinations for backpacking. This Wisconsin state park features around 30 miles of hiking trails, 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and 17 hike-in campsites.
On this trip, I arrived late morning and hiked the southern half of the park (Fern, Lynd Point, Newport, and Rowleys Bay Trails), before setting up at Campsite #3, on Duck Bay. The trails provided some scenic views of Lake Michigan, and my prime campsite essentially had a private beach (shared with Campsite #4)! This is one of Door County's most scenic camping spots.
The hiking weather, on both days, was absolutely tremendous (I did this trip in early June), but there were thunderstorms the first evening. Unfortunately, this meant I didn't get to take advantage of Newport's designation as an International Dark Sky Park (probably the only downside of my visit). The wet weather did, however, bring some visitors to my campsite in the morning. You'll have to check out the video to see who dropped by!
After enjoying some coffee on the beach and drying out my tent a bit, I took on the trails in the northern half of the park (the Europe Bay/Holz Loop). These trails were a bit more difficult than those in the southern portion of the park, but were still very manageable. All of the trails I hiked in the park were well-maintained and in great condition, even after the rain. I finished my hike early in the afternoon and grabbed a burger at Husby's, a Door County institution in Sister Bay, before heading home.
