Door County Wisconsin is often called the ‘Cape Cod’ of the Midwest with its scenic coastal towns, lighthouses, state parks, wineries, and fruit orchards. Door County Wisconsin is a 70-mile-long peninsula, surrounded by Green Bay and Lake Michigan in northeast Wisconsin.
Egg Harbor is located on the western shores of Door County Wisconsin. Egg Harbor was named one of the best small towns in America and it is easy to see why. Egg Harbor has a wonderful waterfront park, cute specialty shops, art galleries and restaurants. If you visit early in October, the Pumpkin Patch Festival is one of the largest in Door County.
As we explored the Door County peninsula the first day, we made several stops. Ellison Bluff County Park has a stairway that leads a visitor right up to the edge of limestone cliffs that are 100 feet above the waters of Green Bay. Door County Wisconsin also has a famous winding road, that was created so drivers would slow down and see the beautiful surroundings. The road leads to Northport Wisconsin at the tip of the peninsula, where drivers can take a ferry to Washington Island. Next, at the cute little bayside town of Sister Bay Wisconsin, you can visit Al Johnson’s which is a Swedish restaurant and gift shop with grass on the roof. During the summer months, when the weather is good, Al Johnson’s has goats on the roof! Unfortunately for us, the goats were not on the roof on such a windy day. Our final stop for the day was at Peninsula State Park. Peninsula State Park was established in 1909 and is a popular Wisconsin camping destination. Eagle Tower is a popular stop at Peninsula State Park. The tower was reopened in 2021 and sites 253 feet above Green Bay. The Eagle Bluff Lighthouse at Peninsula State Park was opened in 1868 and is registered on both the Wisconsin Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places in Washington D.C.
The following day, we traveled to the eastern shore of the Door County peninsula and stopped at the Cana Island Lighthouse. Built in 1869, the Cana Island Lighthouse has stood watch over the thousands of ships that have passed by the shore on Lake Michigan. The Cana Island Lighthouse is 89 feet high, and you can climb the 97-step spiral staircase up to the catwalk where you have spectacular views of the peninsula and Lake Michigan. Cave Point County Park has been carved out over the centuries by violent waves crashing onto the shore. The main attraction at Cave Point County Park is the limestone sea caves that are visible only by kayaking or when scuba diving. Finally, Whitefish Dunes State Park has 863 acres of sand dunes and forest on the Lake Michigan shoreline. There is an expansive beach at this park and over 14 miles of hiking trails.
