Door Lock Lubrication - are you using the right product?
Unfortunately, during the winter months your car locks can freeze, so conditioning them is key. As many vehicles come with keyless entry and smart key systems, it’s easy to not bother. But when either the battery in your remote or the vehicle’s main battery dies, you’ll definitely appreciate a working lock cylinder. And the mechanisms and springs will gum up easily when the wrong lube is used. You should use a PTFE lubricant, PTFE lubricants allows for smoother lock operation while also reducing key wear and inhibiting corrosion.

Good video thank you 🙏🏼 because I was looking for ways to use it as I want to buy a can but I didn’t know what it would be used for and I would still like to know what else it can be used for but that’s a good start. 👍🏼

Will PTFE sprayer also help break down existing gunk inside the lock cylinder as you're spraying it before it dries? Or should you clean it a bit with something like break cleaner before you spray the ptfe sprayer?

Based on a video I watched by an auto lock expert (Cyclone Cyd), brake cleaner was recommended but only if you replace the legit grease inside with a spritz of PTFE then white lithium grease - all this at your own risk of course! He was pretty thorough and I personally think some silicone could be good in between PTFE and grease to cover that middle ground of spread and staying power. A good compromise could be PTFE on a regular basis and add break cleaner / silicone spray / grease if it starts feeling gunky (e.g. key does not spring back to center when rotated) or in the Fall to prepare for winter. Anything is liable to attract lots of dirt (PTFE is about the best lubricant at not attracting dirt), but I think that is tolerable since it is inside the door. I think water could get in there easier than dirt. Everything is a compromise, and conditions like climate apply. I'm more worried about rust than dirt since that is permanent damage. Good luck!

Is there a way to lube up the electronic lock actuator and all its links? Should I just spray down the lock/unlock thing that sticks out on the inside of the door?
@YourHomeGarage
@YourHomeGarage 11 ай бұрын
It doesn’t hurt to spray that latch - however that won’t reach any of the links that you’re referring too. If you want to effectively reach the links, you’ll have to remove the door panel.

@@YourHomeGarage How difficult is it to put everything back post greasing without ruining what's inside like clips, sound dampening material etc?

It’s easy - if you take your time. Just use the right trim reno tools for your car and KZfaq someone that did it on your make/model so you see an example first.

What if you made the mistake of using regular WD-40?

Likely not a big issue over the short term, but switch to the dry lubricant as soon as possible. If you live in a 4 season or dusty area, you’ll definitely want to use the dry lubricant.

Is silicone spray lube ok to use in door locks?

Yes, but silicon is more prone to attracting dirt

@@SnD340 I see, I sprayed silicone in them about 5 days ago. I'd forgotten that I have a small can of Hudini (I think it's called) lock cleaner and lube spray. I should have used that instead, it's good stuff.

@@bodeine454 if it gets worse, door locks are relatively easy and cheap to replace. But I doubt you’ll have any issues with the silicone spray that you used.

The previous comment is correct; silicone will attract dirt. For the future, A dry lubricant is much better.
