Thank you. It is so rare to get a complete and straight forward answer on the topic of music theory! Very well presented!

I'm watching your video in a really random order but I'm always 100% satisfied by them. Absolutely clear message and always great interpretation

Thanks Carlo. I make them in random order. haha. Although, after this tour ends I'm going to launch an online sax school that has everything thing in order by topic. Keep an eye out for it in March

Thanks Rosemary! I think the written part drives the point home with something like this.

How about looking at Miles' solo on So what. Pretty straight forward. 99% dorian. With the occasional awkwardness (M3 once, some b5 as blue notes, and some M7s as approach notes). Thanks for the good work, Scott...

I recently found your channel Scott and every video I've reviewed so far has been very helpful. You bring every down to easy to understand fundamentals that can quickly be applied. I've recommended your channel to some of the guys in the big band I'm in. Thank you.

Regarding the (non-modal, but functional harmonic) Blue Bossa I first would look for (the II/V/I progressions leading to...) the tonal centres. And there are just two: A Minor in the first eight bars, Bb Major in the following, and then back to four bars of A Minor. BTW: Although the Dm7 looks like Dorian it is NOT Dorian, but the 4th step of the A minor scale (call it minor lydian, if you wish, I don't, because as an improvisor I consider IV much more a temporary tonal centre as a II).

I had no idea how to think about this. I just know i was playing dorian on softly as in and my friend said play natural and it sounded way better. Thanks Scott!! How about meodic minor and harmonic minor? Can you relate these to tunes? Another great video would be how to make sense of the diminished, the diminished whole tone, and the half diminished. I get confused on the whole step half step vs the half step whole step and how they relate to the above.

You almost never use melodic minor in jazz. It's all over the place in classical, but almost non-existent in jazz. Harmonic minor pops up all the time, you can use it on minor 2 5 1s especially in latin songs. Yeah, diminished can be pretty confusing. I'll put that on the list.

Scott Paddock thanks Scott. I’ve learned a lot from your videos! I am a bit confused because in my head - I feel like someone very good told me to start working on melodic minor now that I’m comfortable with the major scales (patterns/stacks/licks). I wanna say I was told melodic minor scales, stacks, modes where important. Now that I think of it I’m sure I was told melodic minor was very important. Still mot sure exactly why. I had been planning to work on harmonic minor next. I read in Mark Levines book, Jazz Theory that its a misconception to play harmonic minor over minor 251s. At the same time a very famous bass player told me to use harmonic minor over minor 251s 🤭🤔😂. (Bob Magnuson) At the same time Bob suggested Mark’s book. I think it highlights some of the frustration in learning and is a reminder that this is music theory - not music law, so to speak...Maybe I need to focus more time on improving time and transcribing rather than scale work. One other topic on learning I am thinking about is- playing by feel rather than thinking about each beat as you develop a line. It’s a poor habit I started to just play lines and not think about each beat and how the lines fits exactly with each beat- I notice this is why I have poor time and need to address this big time. However sometime playing by feel sounds ok. Its something I’m wondering if you deal with when working with students. For example- often I will out ireal on and just play a line without thinking “ this note is a down beat the next an upbeat- etc. I feel like need to do that more to keep my place better and have better time. Thanks again! And i was wondering who are you influences sound wise.

You don't do this on the fly do you.. while you are playing that is?
@ScottPaddock

Yes, but in the beginning it takes awhile to recognize the patterns. I can see them as soon as I look at the tune.

Do you look for any particular notes to land on while improvising. Like the 5 or 7.

??? In the Blue Bossa example, you said the E7 should be played as a Em(b9) but that means a b3rd as well, just for clarification?
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 5 жыл бұрын
I mis-spoke. It's definitely an E7(b9). I referred to it as an E7 (mixolydian) a couple times, but when I was wrapping it up I accidentally said Eb-7b9

@@ScottPaddock Your important point (that I must not distract from) is that the 2 is flat, although not written. Since you said that I've realized that it is fairly common, and a nuance of jazz, where the context (chords surrounding it) will tell you where an alteration should occur. Your dynamic playing and teaching is inspiring; please continue...
