I know you can cut and weed the vinyl with a Cricut, but how do you cut the iron-on foil (like the lion's head)?
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns 10 сағат бұрын
Same way! The iron-on foil is basically just heat transfer vinyl with a foil layer on it.

Also, you inspire such peace and joy, that just your videos are kind of therapeutic themselves! Congrats for your work, keep it up and thank you so much for sharing your hard-earned knowledge with us! ❤

This is my third comment on one of your videos so first let me say thank you, this content has led me to make three leather bound books of my own and I’m hooked. I’m struggling with the edge gilt though, the plastic keeps on shifting and scrunching up. I can’t seem to get even coverage no matter what I do. Any help?
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns Күн бұрын
I'm so glad that you're making books! If the plastic shifts and scrunches when you touch it with the iron, it's possible your iron is too hot. Try turning it down a little bit and see if you get better results. I know that's super simple, but I hope it helps!

My only question is why did you not just give your archival book a new spin and keep the original cover? The cover is an integral part of the the book edition and replacing the entire cover just reduced the quality of the book. Next time try just restoring the book and not rebinding the entire book, it will retain a higher value. They both look great but now the archival book has lost all of its personality.
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns Күн бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! The simple answer is that I didn't really want to do a book restoration. I find it more fun to make my own covers, which for me adds personality and meaning to the book--quite the opposite of losing the personality! I get your point, though, and respect where you're coming from. There are many first editions of this book available out there, and I specifically chose one with a ruined cover because I wanted to upcycle it without feeling bad about damaging a pristine antique. Hope that helps answer your question!

I'm sure you've answered this somewhere I'm just struggling to find... when you send the design to your cutting machine on the washi setting, how do you get it to cut through the foil only (not the plastic)? looking at your Aslan design, it seems like you've magicked the machine into not cutting through the plastic so that the foil design stays attached to the plastic and you can lift it off the cutting mat in one piece. Hopefully that makes sense... the problem I'm running into is that my machine will cut all the way through the foil quill sheet leaving my design on the mat, so I can't take it off without taking off little pieces individually which wrecks the design
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns Күн бұрын
Good question. The answer will probably depend on the HTV you are using as well as the cutting machine. With my HTV and using my Cricut Maker, I select the "washi sheet" preset and then select "more" pressure. That seems to allow me to get fine detail without much difficulty weeding and without cutting through the backing. I think you must be using too much pressure. Perhaps you can look up some tutorials to get the best results from HTV on your machine.

@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns 15 күн бұрын
Thanks for asking! The issue here is that you're using HTV. I've tried it, and although the heat transfer foils look like they would work, they are too thick and too strong and will just stick your pages together exactly as you described. The product I'm using here is called Foil Quill. Alternatively you can make hot stamping foil work as well. You can find all the products I use on my Amazon storefront: www.amazon.com/shop/ingenius.designs?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsfshop_aipsfingenius.designs_6HR6TDXK24VCGZ7261XF

Hi there! I have a tutorial for the finishing press that features in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLpmi9lqyJzOg6s.html If you're looking for more information on the press I use just to squash the books while glue dries, etc., then it's not complicated at all! Just a couple pieces of particle board and a couple of large C-clamps from a hardware store!

Just as a warning. The acidity of the materials used will one day yellow and eat through the paper. However if using commercial soft cover books that would probably happen anyway.

I tried do page gilding a few days ago and had problems with the foil not sticking. While I sanded I used coarse, medium and fine sandpaper as that was all that was available. The edges were smooth but not reflective and I thought that it would be fine. The foil ended up not sticking properly, and after ironing on about four layers, it did stick but it was very patchy. Next time, I should try to use a sandpaper with finer grit than the one I have and see it that helps. Thank you for this video, I'm excited to see how my books turn out!

Hi! I was wondering (I’m sure you’ve already said this somewhere and I’m not too sure if you use a Cricut machine) but I’m really wanting to get into the cover designing aspect of bookbinding and am looking at getting a Cricut machine. I was wondering if you could tell me if you get your HTV from somewhere else (hopefully less expensive!)? I want lots of colours to experiment with but that is expensive aha. EDIT: Nevermind! I knew you would have put it somewhere! Went through the comments and found you use Siser HTV! I have loved your videos, they bring such satisfaction and are really enjoyable! I hope you make more! (It can be just satisfying and educational to watch you make the books, because I imagine big videos like these would take a heap of time!) anyway, sending lots of encouragement! 😊
