In this video, I demonstrate a Toshiba Libretto subnotebook from 1999, and explain why I love it and why it makes for a very good DOS and early Windows gaming PC.

I see one on eBay right now (MacBookPro4,1/A1261) for $75+22.50. It can run Big Sur unofficially with graphics acceleration, and Monterey without.

Lol I have the 70CT... amazing, it's like the size of a handheld console with a powerhouse 486DX, it's quite unheard of. Remember back in 1997, every classmate has a pentium / 80486 midi tower, keyboard, mouse and 15 inch CRT... Lol it is a delight to see it run Zsnes emulator in dos.

Hey, I perked up right when you mentioned recelling the battery, I actually own a 100ct, it uses the same battery as the 110ct I believe. I'm doing a recell on it, it uses 17670 li-ion cells. I plan on using 17500 cells because they're the same diameter and have a bit more wiggle room for soldering the pack up (I don't have a spot welder). modern li-ion cell shave a bit higher capacity than these far older ones, so the battery life should be like new, if a bit lower.
@brianscomputerretreat6485
@brianscomputerretreat6485 2 жыл бұрын
I still haven't gotten around to re-celling the battery pack, but it sounds like these smaller cells should be fine. And the 17670 cells seem to be nearly impossible to find these days. Good luck with your recell, and please let me know how it goes!

Love the video..I was watching it while mine was being shipped in excitement haha. Question for you tho. Alot of my dos games are later release that were on cd, when I transfer them over from another windows install using pcmcia compact flash it asks me to put in the CD, which I clearly can't. By any chance would you know any walk around to this??

I couldn’t get this 2:55 CF to IDE adapter to work. I blinks red power light and does not even start the boot sequence. I tried two separate adapters. Looks like some sort of electric issue or BIOS? Works fine with PATA SSD.

For the video stuttering issue, you might try a decoder card like the Margi DVD-to-Go which has hardware decoding for MPEG 1 and 2. The Libretto 110ct supports the "Zoom Video" pass-through those cards require built into the card slots. Do you happen to have a link for the CF to IDE adapter? My drive in a 100CT is sometimes going whirr-click-whirr-click when just sitting at the desktop, so I might need one soon and I've heard of issues with other 2.5" to CF adapters with Librettos in the past.

Thanks for the note about the stuttering video! I generally am okay with the occasional stutters, but if I ever see a DVD-to-Go card I may pick it up. I used this CF adapter, and it works, but I had to disassemble the case a bit because it was a tiny bit thicker than the drive slot. It looks like the Libretto 50CT started out at $1999 in 1997, but was quickly discounted in the US. According to CNet, it was down to only $699 in May of 1998. I think they were much more popular in Japan and likely didn't drop in price as dramatically, but they really didn't take off here in the states.

This was NOT a palmtop. Never was advertised as one. Palmtops were limited, this was a full functional computer. Palmtops ran Windows CE at the time this computer came out. Apples Newton was dead by this time as well. Just saying, i worked in the industry when this computer came out and we did not sell the Libretto as a palmtop. ;-) Nice video tho, i owned a 166mhz version of this, but i always had a mouse with me. :-)

I love/hate this laptop. The battery doesn't hold - naturally, so your corded while using - the screen has a limited viewing angle, hence you need to be constantly looking with your back and eyes on the same position, straining your body. Lack of USB makes me nuts. The keys are crammed together: the world has evolved to a minimum of a netbook-tablet-sized keyb which far comfortable to this. I only think about gutting this thing out, screw history and put in an rpi, better keyb, better screen.
