My favorite background treatment is dot punch background. It is very efficent and also very beautiful. When done correctly it allows the engraver to quickly achieve a visually interesting and pleasing effect.

doing a very light brass punch on an old buzz box graver over the dot punch really pops. You should try it sometime. It's one of my favorite textures. But easy to over do. I'm talking VERY light circular passes to make the circles dance in the light from all angles and... It smooths any rough edges without the need to sand. I made a small pen shaped graver for use on a bike pump reciprocator, similar to the graver designs all over YT. It uses a small brass hammer of 3.2g and runs very light/fast. The impression it leaves is very shallow because the tool point is also brass. Run at high speed, it makes very fast and light taps so the coverage is super fast.
