I'm invesigating seated playing due to health problems, the tips around leg position were really useful! Being 6ft 2 I often wondered where to put my right knee so I don't catch it on a downbow!

I’m a jazz and blues player who uses a sitting posture exclusively. For years I used the standard 31 inch barstool and then one day I spaced out and left it at home when going to a rehearsal. The rehearsal studio had a 24 inch stool that turned out to be a vast improvement. I feel much more stable and grounded. I use a Roc n Soc tool that is marketed to drummers and percussionists and it’s so comfortable that I don’t mind that it doesn’t break down for transport. What I loved about this instructional video was the discussion about not impinging the movement of the back of the bass. I kept that in mind in my practice sessions and it does make a difference, I feel. Thanks so much, Discover Double Bass!

I also have used a stool from the early school days to the present time as well orchestral as jazz or pop gigs to recording sessions no matter I have to carry the stool I never forget to have one in the Van Truck, another at home and some more in the studio. I think the abilities to play are way much better sitting than standing. Thanks for the lesson BTW.

I agree with putting the knee on the back of the bass severely reducing the resonance however, I have a horrific wolf tone on all A's and found that it was the easiest way to eliminate this issue. With this said I do reposition to kneeing outside the bass when I normally play.

I really wish I could sit on such a high stool to get better access to the bass - Joseph's so tall he even *looks* like he's playing the cello! I'm short and have tiny hands, and I'm sure my posture isn't great as I'm leaning down over the shoulders to play. I should contact one of the surprising number of petite professional bassist ladies for a lesson or two.

It can be tricky. One bit of advice is to aim to bend at the waist to keep your back straight. We get a lot of questions on this topic and will be sure to cover it in future featuring bassists of all sizes.

I started standing but since playng in an Orchestra i've moved to sitting. i prefer to sit but maybe with a bent endpin standing would be better for me, RobPin sounds interesting but certainly for the moment im content sitting. i also use a guitar footstool for my left leg to get some height on it but move it further out from my body rather than use a chair rung but some good tips here Geoff, Thanks.

Ive never been able to play a full rehearsal seated. Stand up guy right here. My back would murder me, with Beethoven and other big hard pieces. Im currently trying to play seated. But I always feel like im trying to prove I can play a giant cello thats in FRONT of me instead of tucked in my abdomen and groin.

@@DiscoverDoubleBass First of all, thank you for your awesome DB content! Ill try and find the perfect stool and height. There are a lot of pros for seated players in the vídeo. The decreased strain in the lombar region is the reason I felt the need to change a few months ago.

idk how much the knee really stops the bass. I think the endpin would make a bigger difference--a rubber stopper on stage, vs. the spike in direct contact to resonate with the stage. Wonder if that's ever been tested?

I've heard a lot of players discuss this and I'm sure how you use of end pin does have an effect, especially when comparing a rubber stop vs spike into a wooden surface. My old teacher used to use a sheet of plywood for this and as well as being very practical at keeping the bass stable, the spike directly into the wood did sound different (in his opinion).

I'm not sure, but it seems Joseph didn't talk about the endpin's height when sitting. I myself use a very low endpin, like 3 or 4 inches outside, but some bassists seem not to use anything at all. How much does Joseph extend his double bass' endpin?

I'm not sure about Joe, but I will look to see if we have any photos which show the end pin to work it out. The main thing is that it will be different for everyone due to the different height of the player and stool. From memory Joe's end pin was the usual couple of inches out.

What about German bow players? I'd love to play seated, but I haven't found a way to fully access the E string without rotating the bass outward. My right leg is in the way when trying to play the low string at the tip of the bow. I suppose you could go "full cello" and have the bass entirely in front of you, but that makes it difficult to reach the higher strings.

My suggestion is that you have to be flexible and change your posture in the same way as when you're playing standing up. The bass has to be more open (forward-facing) to access the E string than when playing on the G string but it's only a small adjustment. IMO it's a better approach than trying to find a static position which can be less comfortable over time. It really is the same as when standing, you don't balance/position the bass in the same way playing the G compared to the E strings. These are only small adjustments, but crucial.

I play the double bass in orchestra. I bought a stool for playing. But must be sitting wrong cause after a while its gets uncomfy. Looking at more comfable sitting poistions. My bass is so solid and heavy its uncomfy to support it.

One quick tip is to change your position regularly to stop you getting uncomfortable. You don’t need to keep your legs anchored in the same position all the time, especially on a long session.

@@DiscoverDoubleBass ah thank you 🙏 did a 7 hour session in dingwall and at the end was murder aha even the violin players were shacking there hands was good though next time I'm bringing a pillow lol. All us bass players at end was walking like we have a full nappy 🤣 will definitely change my sitting position though thank you

Here a question how do you keep the strings clean from rasin from the bow? I do wipe them but feel they need maybe abit more of a clean

I've always just used a cloth, but you can buy string cleaner. You need to be sparing and make sure it's completely off the strings so the rosin sticks next time you use it.

The very best ones I've tried are from the German companies K&M (affordable and stable) and Kolberg (more expensive but very portable)
