They’re the best-selling artists of all time (not just biggest rock band) and responsible for every piece of music your friend likes or listens to today. They made some 215 songs in just 7 years (as a band) and changed everything. Their invention, innovation, experimentation, and influence can’t be overstated. He might not “get it” from 2 songs but he better learn 😎

They were the first band to record in tracks, "layer-caking". which changed engineering and production forever. Their songs include hundreds of standards. Frank f***ing Sinatra recorded one of their songs ("Something"). You guys really are philistines.

Yep - it's impossible for someone born today to understand the impact of the Beatles on the world, because they live in the world that the Beatles created. The only way to truly know the Beatles influence is to have been alive as it happened.

Yes, they wrote close to 300 songs in 7 and a half years, and a LOT of them are all-time classics. That's unheard of before or since

They experimented. They pushed boundaries, sometimes ignoring them. "I Am the Walrus".....insane!!! I'll admit that there are bands I think are as good (Yes; XTC) but you can't be better than the Beatles, anymore than you can break the speed of light barrier. And what makes them so exceptional is that they already had a VERY successful career of cranking out pop hits, but they wanted to do more, and they risked their fan-base to do it. When Sgt. Pepper came out, some dj's refused to plwy it. Us kids taught them a lesson.

To really understand why The Beatles are the best-selling artists of all-time and appreciate them you must listen to a lot of songs--as the variety of styles and THE NUMBER of great songs is truly amazing. There recording history was, also, only about 7 1/2 years!

In the 60s I was in a band that was signed to The Beatles management. It was great to know The Beatles and you only had to listen to their songs to understand the beauty of their melodies, lyrics, vocals and musicality.

Thanks for this . The Beatles outsold, both in Albums and Singles,the next TWO Worldwide Acts COMBINED(Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley). They performed 230 TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY different songs. between 1962-70. These 2 songs were only ONE YEAR apart(1965-1966). Before The Beatles, just solo Artists and they not only changed the face of music, worldwide but CHANGED THE WORLD. First Band to have ALL THE TOP 5 in THe USA Charts and 14 in THe Top 100 at the same time. The first band to play outdoors(55,000@ Shea Stadium) In Adelaide, Australia 500,000 greeted them from the Airport to their hotel. WORLD RECORD for over 3,000 other Artists recording "Yesterday". I could go on...lol

Great stats, and yes you could go on with enough stats to fill a book.....several have!! In the few short years they were together as a group, they took us through the 60's pop era to the late 60's - early 70's psychedelic, to the mid 70's and beyond rock and roll. It was one of those "you had to be there" things in life to believe the impact they had upon life!!

When it comes to bands and not single artists like Elvis and Michael Jackson Beatles has had the most nr1 hits but the nr 2 BAND are actually ABBA they have had almost as many hits on hit lists all over the world during he 1970s and in to the early 80s in probably more different countries then Beatles,who where uge in Germany UK Scandinavia and the US ABBA had top 10 hits in almost Every European country as well as Australia and US over a a period from 1973 to 82 The newer songs from the latest album reached the top ten lists in over 40 countries worldwide and that was over 40 years after their last album was released Björn and Benny was inspired by no other then the Beatles and they inspired Björn Ulveus to pick up and learn to play the guitar as a teenager and join a band and write lyrics as well it is amazing that a small country as Sweden can produce music on the same level as the Beatles

...and a few other things, too. They changed fashion; everybody imitated their hair and clothes, and when they changed it, so did everybody else. When they wrote about Indian spirituality, everybody listened. and when they started obviously taking acid, it just so happened that everybody else was, too. They released "Sgt. Ptter" and it hit exactly what was happening in American society. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds....*sigh*.....

The Beatles covered so much ground musically, that it's hard to have a favorite. A day in the life is one of my favorites but so is Yellow Submarine, I am the Walrus, Come together, Obladee Obladaa, so damn many. To be a young person when The Beatles first hit, was amazing. Michael never wrote the kind of music The Beatles wrote. Their songs are still sung. The Beatles are the best band ever!

I cannot lie.....Eleanor Rigby is probably my favourite Beatles song ever (I know there's a big choice!) I'm left wondering was she a spinster who died sad and alone. Haunting and beautiful it's pure class.

The whole body of music of The Beatles is what makes them great.

I first saw the Beatles at the Cavern club in Liverpool in 1962, just prior to their worldwide fame, fantastic memories. Their music still sounds amazing today!

I love that Bruce disguised progressive, critical commentary against war and the lack of social services in an upbeat-sounding, pro-USA song. t's always funny how right-wingers play that as a flag waver, as though no one has ever listened to the lyrics before.

Through the 60s, recording techniques were being discovered every year. Most by the Bealtes. With each recording you can hear them get more and more sophisticated and professional. Most acts have their most popular stuff on the first album. Their best stuff just kept coming. Michael Jackson was a popular "dancer", but never came close to the Beatles.

Jackson was a huge Beatles fan, he covered 'come together' and bought the rights to the Beatles catalog. Beatles are the greatest artist of all time because they shat out classic songs and timeless melodies.

In the autumn of 1969 I was in 7th grade. Waiting in line in the school cafeteria the mood was subdued. Noticed some of he older girls in small groups crying. My friend Cindy rushes in choking out the words "Paul is dead! Paul McCartney is dead!" It was an urban legend that ran rampant among the school girls of my generation. He had supposedly died in 1966 and been replaced by a look-alike to keep Beatlemania going. There were supposed to be clues on some of the songs and on LP covers. My older sister and I went through our albums trying to play songs backwards where the clues were supposed lurk and we scrutinized the cover photo of Abbey Road trying to make sense of it. We agreed it was probably just a rumor - but I had many friend who insisted on it.

Not only that, but in the early 1960s, they only used a limited number of cameras that were so big that they had to be mounted on wheels. The performers of the day had to remain in the one spot whilst it was the cameras that moved around them. The Beatles film, A Hard Days Night actually references this. So, even in this The Beatles tried to introduce something different and as the 60s progressed this would be another area in which their screen presence evolved.

I was born around the time that the Beatles got their start so I literally grew up listening to them. I can’t imagine a world without them (just like in the movie Yesterday.) Their music seriously helped me through some family tragedies when I was growing up….especially songs like Hey Jude, Let It Be, and The Long and Winding Road, just to name a few. On the rare instances when I have encountered someone who has never heard of the Beatles, I simply feel pity for them cuz they are missing out, big time. And on the even more rare occasion when I meet someone who doesn’t like the Beatles, well, let’s just say that I immediately know that that person and I will never be friends cuz we clearly perceive the world so differently that the chasm between us is simply too large to cross. Hurts my head that Gabe has heard so little of the Beatles but doesn't surprise me even amongst my peers (I'm 55) when I play all my favourite tracks they love the song but didn't know it was the Beatles, There will never be another band like the Beatles, their influence, creativity, impact not just on the world of music but the world itself there's something for everyone in their back catalogue, Last year I managed to get hold of a programme at auction when they played a concert in 1963 in my hometown (Guildford) and on the same night you could have watched the Rolling Stones playing at a local pub a couple of miles away! Think we need to put Gabe in isolation for a bit so he he can appreciate some of the music we couldn't have lived without! Nick, a few suggestions to show Gabe. The Beatles concert at Shea Stadium in 1965, You might find a complete song, or just the start of the concert with Ed Sullivan introducing them. This was the first major stadium concert, and was the largest concert crowd at the time (~55,000 people). I agree, he should ask them, "CAN YOU NAME A SONG BY THE BEATLES?" When someone asks ME what is my favorite Beatles' song, I tell them it's IMPOSSIBLE for me to do that, I CAN'T pick one, It changes depending on my mood any particular day. I love ALL their "periods" , I just LOVE ALL their music. I have all my original albums that I bought back in the '60s, plus ALL their SOLO albums, which were all on vinyl at the time. When all their albums were released on CD, I bought those too.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps is not an obscure Beatles song. And two songs are not enough to judge the Beatles. Both of those songs were from around 1965 and 1966. By 1966 through 1969 they hit their most creative peak. They were incredibly diverse in style. Helter Skelter was the first heavy metal song. They were the beginnings of prog rock. Many genres came from them.

The more I look back on the Beatles the more I appreciate them. Beatles were the first group to write their own music where most artists were backed by songwriting teams and with their sound engineer George Martin developed many recording techniques that shaped the future of music. They were the first stadium rock band when they performed in the Shea stadium in 1964 and were also fashion icons with their own self styled hair cut and suites a style copied by many bands throughout the 60's. In short no other bunch of musicians has influenced pop culture throughout the years like the Beatles and you can stil here their influence in bands such as Oasis, Tears for fears and many others.

The first Shea Stadium concert was in 1965 on Aug. 15th, they also had one there in 1966, but it was the 1965 concert that was filmed.

Try listening to "1". It has the 27 #1 hits, in order. Their progression is phenomenal. You can't possibly get their impact with only two songs. Oh, and those 27 were "singles". There are probably another 27 from albums where the songs weren't released as singles; Norwegian Wood for example.

The Beatles' massive shot to fame can't be attributed to one song, as different songs of theirs had blown up in different countries, generally several songs at a time. Early songs by The Beatles which had definitely made them international superstars are Love Me Do, P.S. I Love You, Please Please Me, She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand, I Saw Her Standing There, their cover of the Top Notes' Twist and Shout, their cover of Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven, Can't Buy Me Love, A Hard Day's Night, I Feel Fine, Eight Days a Week, Ticket to Ride, and their cover of Chuck Berry's Rock and Roll Music. Between 1962 and 1965, there hadn't been an artist who could've touched their shot to being the top band, and they'd become better and better for five years after. I'd hedge Twist and Shout being the most iconic early song by The Beatles, as well as one of the most iconic songs by The Beatles. Once they'd covered it, it had become the most well-known cover of arguably any song in history. Hearing it is what I imagine would make most people aware that they're listening to The Beatles. If the main aim is to impress with songs by The Beatles, five go-tos which I recommend for reactions are: The trilogy of Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, and The End Strawberry Fields Forever Revolution 1 Something We Can Work It Out While My Guitar Gently Weeps isn't an obscure song by The Beatles, to clarify. It's one of the three most popular songs by The Beatles which had been written and sung by George Harrison, and one of its guitar solos had been played by Eric Clapton. Obscure songs are most songs on early albums and soundtracks by The Beatles. Nearly every song from Rubber Soul to Let It Be on a studio album is well-loved and consistently praised. The rumor you referred to is “Paul is dead” that PUl had died and was replaced, they would leave clues on their albums. On Sgt. pepper they referred to their new singer, Billy Spears. The next voice was unrecognizable because it was the first song sung by Ringo

He's right about the conspiracy. It's about Paul. As mentioned by others, it's supposedly why he's barefoot on the Abbey Road album cover which was the first album after he "died". And if you check the car's license plate it says "28 IF" which is what he would be at the time if he hadn't died. This is the conspiracy, not me 😄. Haven't checked if the numbers adds up though. The song "a day in the life" is said to be Lennon writing about it. And, again supposedly, there's some hidden messages on the white album if you play it backwards.

At the end of "Strawberry Fields" when the music is being played backwards (those flute sounds), you hear John allegedly saying "I buried Paul". John denied saying that. He claims he said "Cranberry Sauce".

"A Day in the Life" is NOT Lennon writing about it. The lines John wrote were from ACTUAL ARTICLES from the NEWSPAPER. Tara Brown, the heir to the Guinness fortune, who was killed in a car crash, when he didn't observe the traffic light changing and he was also a fried of John's, That is the "he blew his mind out in a car" line. It had nothing to do with trying to give "clues" about Paul being dead. This was ALL started by a college kid in Ann Arbor Michigan back in '69. NONE Of it is TRUE, it's ALL nonsense and the Beatles had better things to do than to think up ways to put "clues" in their music or album covers. They CERTAINLY DIDN'T NEED to do something like that to promote themselves. There records sold JUST FINE without anything dumb like that.

Paul McCartney was the Deadman. Sergeant Pepper's cover is the funeral scene, Abbey road cover is the trip back from the graveyard to the studio to begin recording again. The first song is called come together It's about Paul's resurrection.

Years ago, when my daughter was 10 years old, I stopped into a music store and saw that they had the Beatles "Red" album (their hits from 1962-1966), and their "Blue" album (their hits from 1967-1970), on CDs. I bought them took them home, and played them for my daughter. After she heard the songs, she asked me if she could have the CDs. I gave them to her, and went back to the store and bought a second set of them for myself. Seeing my daughter really enjoy their music, really made me happy, because it showed me that their music was timeless. I'm sure that Gabe knows a lot of rap music, or what I call crap music, because it all sounds the same to me. What Gabe doesn't understand was that, back when this music came out, the Beatles type of music was the "IN thing", I mean, that's what was popular back then. If you played rap music back then, no one would have listened to it, so music preferences are a generational thing. In the 50's, there was Doo-Wap music, the 60's and 70's was rock and roll, the late 70's and 80's it was disco, now it's hip-hop and rap. What I have found over the years (I'm 70 years old), is that, all generations like rock and roll music. If a rock and roll song came on the radio today, a young person would move to the beat of the song, even though they probably wouldn't know who the artists were. Rock and roll was considered the devil's music by parents when it came out because it made young people want to get up and dance.

I would have not known the Beatles, or cared, if my older sister had not bought the red album and blue album and had them in the house. I ‘ discovered’ them at the age 16 in 1977. The Beatles were already over. But , man, I LOVED the music. None of my classmates were listening to them. But the Beatles became one of the most influential things in my life. I cannot imagine life without them. The movie “Yesterday” made so much sense to me.

I could go on Chrismeadows4216, but you get the point. Lennon & McCartney wrote The Stones first charting hit and gave it to them to record. Others including the Beatles also recorded "I Wanna Be Your Man". The Beatles considered the tune a throw away. The song convinced "The Glimmer Twins", (Keith & Mick), they could also write their own songs & music. I'd say they've proved their point over the last 55 years or so! Long Live Keith! @@davidjennings1771, I agree with the first six artists, though there's limited range of the rest, as awesome as songs are. I understand why songs of theirs which aren't general favorites aren't general favorites, whereas with the first six artists, it feels slighting if they aren't recognized for nearly every song which they've ever released. They're beyond being influential. All of their music is high quality, recognizable, and captures excellent dynamics. It's easy for nearly all of their songs to be general favorites, should they be experienced.

The big studios employed songwriters, and they matched recording artists with songs that the studios thought would suit them. The idea that the performers would write their own songs was frowned upon, and big artists were only allowed to play one or two of their own songs on an album as a way of keeping them happy. The Beatles began by doing covers of other songs, like every band of that era. The first two albums were a mix of their own material and covers, but their own material was the stuff that captured the imagination of fans. Their third album, A Hard Day's Night, was the first mainstream album ever to feature 100% their own songs. People today don't think twice about artists writing all their own material, but it was just another of the many things that were pioneered by the Beatles.

No, those videos were made for the UK and Europe, we never SAW them here, except when they showed up on bootleg video tapes, that were not great quality. The only videos that were shown on the Ed Sullivan show was for "RAIN" and "PAPERBACK WRITER" but not the earlier videos like "HELP!" Before "Rain" and "Paperback Writer" they appeared live on The Ed Sullivan Show Stage, last time was in September 1965

@@wpollock1 It was a rumour in London, briefly, and then it crossed the Atlantic and was presented as a joke, with all the 'clues', etc. Of course, some people took it seriously and once someone gets hooked on a conspiracy theory, it's very hard to unhook them. There are still people lurking on YT etc touting all sorts or flimsy and increasingly absurd 'proofs'... Not hard to dismantle if you have the time and energy. But what's the point? Believers want to believe and don't care about logic and facts.

Help!, from the album and movie of the same name, was recorded in April/May 1965. Eleanor Rigby was recorded for the album Revolver in April-June 1966. There was another album between those two, Rubber Soul.

And they came up with a Paul impersonator to replace him . In the song “ A Day In a Life “ they tell the story of a car crash & at the end of Strawberry Fields you’ll hear what many believed to be “ I buried Paul “ there’s more to it & you can read it on the internet .

In fairness, Thriller has sold nearly twice as many copies as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which is the best-selling album by The Beatles, and it's the best-selling album of all time.

@@chrismeadows4216 In the interests of complete fairness though, comparing the album sales of Thriller with Sgt Peppers is comparing apples with concrete. The 1960s and 1980s were worlds apart economically and technically. When "Beatlemania" was at its peak from 1963-65, the average person could not afford albums, and it was only about singles. Throughout the Beatles career their most popular songs weren't on the albums. They sold more than 1.6 billion singles, which was dominance like never seen before or since. Without acknowledging that, saying that Sgt Peppers (with no singles on it) "only" sold 35m copies compared with 70m for Thriller (which had three of MJ's most famous singles on it, Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller) is a meaningless comparison. It was the Beatles popularity that actually changed the way music was sold. Their 5th and 6th albums, Rubber Soul and Revolver, were the first albums to become mass market purchases (10m+ copies), simply because they were so good that people saved to buy them. When Sgt Peppers then sold the numbers it did (30m+), it was extraordinary for that era. Most people who bought Sgt Peppers were buying an album for the first time in their life. As a result of the Beatles success, studios and artists saw the commercial potential of albums, and they began their rise as the dominant format in place of singles, which eventually disappeared. And in the Beatles era understand that it was vinyl records and nothing else. Recorded music sales overall really only took off in the 1970s when cassettes became affordable, because for the first time people could take music out of the house, and even into their cars. Then in the early 1980s came CDs, which made music even more portable, and coincided with the launch of MTV. Michael Jackson was talented, and Thriller was a great album, but he was in the right place at the right time, with the videos being perfect for the start of the MTV era.

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Thriller had both been available on equal footing in an age of the world having a much larger population, and as newer generations have been able to trace classic albums back and buy them, Michael Jackson's Thriller sales have been exponentially more notable, likely more due to his death and public circumstances than due to it being more recently released than Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Forty years is a very long time ago, not much more than toward sixty years ago. The Beatles hadn't had much competition in their era, even of Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones. Michael Jackson had competition of David Bowie, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Queen, U2, Madonna, Prince, Phil Collins, and Janet Jackson, and had crushed everyone with Thriller. Thriller has everything on it which is essential listening in pop, r&b, soul, funk, and hard rock, including Paul McCartney. It isn't the greatest fairness that album sales aren't closer, but it's Thriller.

You say that The Beatles had no competition other than Elvis and The Stones, which conveniently omits - just in the year of Sgt Peppers alone - Hendrix, the Who, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, the Doors, Cream, the Supremes, Jefferson Airplane, the Monkees, Simon & Garfunkel, and countless others. It was actually a far more competitive era than the early 1980s. And you can't refute the point I made about singles being the popular form of record sale in the 1960s as compared with albums. The Beatles top 20 hits weren't even on their albums, they were only released as singles, and if you look at the total sales of everything, the Beatles sold more than 2 BILLION records of all types, way out in front of anyone else. The other thing I charitably didn't point out is that while Sgt Peppers was the Beatles top selling album, it wasn't that far in front of Revolver, Rubber Soul, the White Album and Abbey Road. If you look at any critical or fan list, you will find widespread differences of opinion on what the Beatles best album was (let alone the singles). MJ was more than a one-hit wonder, obviously, but he sure didn't have five or six other albums of similar stature to Thriller. You're comparing an artist who had a great career, with one standout album, to a band that revolutionized music, changed the way it was consumed, and defined a generation.

Anybody over the age of twenty who says they have never heard The Beatles, unless they have spent the vast majority of those years living under a rock I can guarantee they will have done, they just don't realize it yet.

Eleanor Rigby was a real person , she was a lonely old neighbour of Paul McCartney's who lived on her own & Paul would run errands for her to get her shopping etc and sit and chat with her to give her some company . when she died she had no family who attended her funeral .

Her’s was a name on a gravestone in a local cemetery. She was long dead by the time of the Beatles.

@@MrPercy112 , Yes she died before the beatles were formed , Paul knew her when he was a boy & he told the story and the inspiration to the song in a interview in 2021 to the New Yorker .

Sorry, but Eleanor Rigby dies in 1938, aged fourteen. She is buried in Wooton (?) cemetery, Liverpool. Poetic licence - McCartney transposed the name, and sentiment, between two different people. McCartney is on record, stating both origins.

I don't know if 'She Loves You' was literally the Beatles' first big hit, but it was certainly one of their biggest for a long time. The 'yeah, yeah, yeah' from the chorus was so stereotypically associated with them that in at least one European country, I believe, they were almost better known as the 'Yeah-Yeah-Yeahs', and I've seen comic book appearances they made at the time that feature them just randomly saying 'Yeah!' when they're not saying anything else. So in terms of an early 'defining' song for the Beatles, that's a pretty good candidate - later, maybe 'Hey Jude'.

"I Want to Hold Your Hand" was the first Beatle song to hit America. It was backed with the excellent "I Saw Her Standing There", which only whetted the appetites of American listeners for more Beatles songs. The second blockbuster released in the U.S. was "She Loves You" backed with "I'll Get You". But the Beatles had earlier hit songs in England, such as "P.S. I Love You" and "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me". These songs made their way over to America very shortly after "She Loves You." In a flash, the U.S. was flooded with Beatle music.

Actually "PLEASE PLEASE ME" was their FIRST NUMBER ONE song in the U.K. and Europe. and was only their SECOND single. "LOVE ME DO" was their FIRST single in the charts in the UK and it made it to number 17. This was in 1963 for both. In the U.S. "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND b/w "I SAW HER STANDING THERE" was their FIRST number 1. It was released in the U.S. the day after Christmas in 1963, that was when I first heard it on the radio, I was 16.

Paul was the one who was reputedly replaced. There was a statement that could be heard when the dead space at the end of an album was played backwards. It said “Paul is dead miss him miss him.” It was said his death was the reason Paul was barefoot on Abbey Road.

It was the "Paul is dead" rumor. And the Beatles met Elvis, literally sitting at his feet until he said, "I thought we were going to play together." And then they jammed. Play him "Let It Be," "Tomorrow Never Knows," and "Helter Skelter." Show him how much they could do.

How good were they? After the band broke up all four of them went on to have successful solo recording careers. This song was written by John who was really reaching out for HELP! he was having a difficult time with the level of fame they had achieved, loss of privacy, everyone wanting something from them.

I was alive (and very young) before they broke up and the best compliment i can give them is that although i loved their early stuff, in their later years i would hear their songs and liked them but didn't realize till later that it was them! It blew me away that they could change their sound and still be that good.
