In this video, Evan (Pro splicer) gives a detailed explanation of how to splice double braid rope, and Jess (Beginner splicer) try's to replicate his instructions.
Splicing Tips / Common Questions...

Where do I get double braid rope? - rightrope.com/...
The splicing technique in this video is for class 1 double braid rope. If you have a class 2 (core dependent) rope then you will need a different technique. If you have a 32 or 48 carrier rope, pull out 4 sets of strand when tapering the cover. If you have a 16 carrier rope, only pull out two sets of strands.
Don’t have a fid? You can find measurement tables online for fid lengths.
To pass the rope back through itself, you can use a small wire (like piano wire) but make sure to insert in the exit point, and out the entry point to pull through!

Some details about this rope...
Our double braid nylon rope is made in the USA from 100% high-tenacity nylon yarns. Double braid nylon is the right choice for any application where some stretch is required to mitigate the chances of rope failure or you need a very strong, durable rope with the elasticity to be able to withstand shock loading. Great for anchor / dock lines and towing.
These ropes are made by expert rope makers using modern braiding equipment and meets or exceeds the standards set by the Cordage Institute specifications for high-performance ropes.
Double-braid is typically the strongest construction of rope and has a braided inner core and a braided outer jacket. This rope construction is torque-free and will not hockle or kink, and can be easily spliced. Nylon has excellent abrasion resistance and ultraviolet degradation protection. Our premium double braid nylon ropes are also resistant to rot, mildew, marine growth, chemicals and petroleum products. These high-strength ropes are soft, flexible, and are easy to handle.
At #RightRope, all of our ropes are in stock and ready to go. We offer fast, same-day shipping on all of our products. When you shop RightRope, you can be sure you’re getting the right rope at the right price.

Great video...the teaching technique of showing us once, and then having a novice do the same thing, is very effective. Great job.

I’ve never successfully spliced double braided rope. Tomorrow I’m following your instruction on 10mm rope (no idea what that is in imperial measurement) which is thinner and I suspect a lot harder to do than your 12 or 18mm. It is definitely the best instructional video I have seen on splicing. Thanks so much. I’ll let you know how I go.

Nope. I just couldn’t get the core to slip back past the exit at the first spot where I pulled the core from. Two cores just will not fit. At the one time. Am I using the wrong braid? What is the trick?

Really great instruction and patience. The first time what you are doing doesn’t seem to make much sense but as you see the core and splice disappear you can see the results coming. I loved how precise she was being measuring fid lengths and tapering!😊

Just a realization that made it a whole lot easier for me to follow the process: MARK-letter is on the cover. MARK-number is on the core.

Passing the core back through the cover from A to past B a fid length ... you make it look so easy ... I used a bloody hammer and it was so tight the core came detached from the fid, leaving the core stuck and unworkable further !!! Had to abandon and cut off the half done splice. You must be using special easy rope. Would like some real world help without the jolly music !!

Easy on a thick rope like this but much harder, if at all possible on small sizes.

The part starting at 16 .25 is just imposssible. Putting the core throught he first empty part of the cover is OK, but once you get to the point where the rope is íntact -full core and cover - at 17:09 no measure of force or coercion or milking more cover from the end will get it a full fid length as in 17:39. There must be another way of doing it.

8:44 I use a seam ripper on smaller 12 strand ropes for the taper. Sometimes thread snips are needed to cut the strands but a good sharp seam ripper will usually cut right through. It’s just easier for me than scissors. I haven’t tried it with double braid yet but it looks like it would work fine.

Can I splice in an eye in a 5/8” thick COTTON rope? The core doesn’t slide easily…but I need a loop at the end…not for sailing;) Thanks!

I don't know what to call it, but there's a more traditional sailors way of splicing, where one is basically unravelling the rope and plaiting the two back together. The technique on this video is best suited to the slippery synthetic rope, particularly with an outer sheath. There's certain to be loads of tutorials here on KZfaq.

To use the technique in this video, it would have to be a double braid rope, which would be suprising for a cotton rope. If it is a different construction than double braid or 3-strand, it likely isn't spliceable.

omgash lol when does it ever take 3 entire seconds to pull out a core?? also when does the last step of milking the core back into the cover ever happen that easily. it would be nice to see real world splicing, good theory, but not practical as it doesn't address issues like taking hours just to pull the core out of the cover, then pulling the line to get the core to go back into the cover is almost always too big to actually fit back inside the hole, and the core bunches up as you pull, it's never as easy as these videos make it out to be.

It's easier to mark the cover but wait to cut ot out the strands after you run the cover through the core. We pull out every 5th pair to taper but whatever works for you I guess.

The lasting the woman does is incorrect at the end. The stitching goes through both sides. She did it between the two ropes. The instructor did it correctly.

Meaning the space is too thin to pass through a double core and a fid with tape on it. There has to be a technique for this but none of the experts on videos will explain it. Very strange

I have watched so many videos of this splice. Not ONE explains HOW to pass the fid and rope through. In reality it is impossible see 17mins on your video. Too thick by far. Rope comes off inside. It would set someone asside from the rest if they can only explain HOW to pass this fid through the space that is clearly too thin!

That's exactly the problem I have. At that point you have the core and cover and that has to fit in to a section that already has a core. That means you have 3 times the original inside the outer core. I just can't get it all in

Milk a bunch of cover towards that tight spot until the cover is slack there and it will go. What Evan doesn't mention is that used rope makes this splice difficult to almost impossible.... it is possible but you need to move the cover around alot to bring some slack into play

The key is to ensure you have the correct FID diameter. The last step of feeding the core is easier if you use a smaller diameter FID BUT ensure you use the lengths of the correct FID. It’s difficult but works well. Very hard the do the very last step of pulling everything back into the rope.
