Have you seen the double-ended colored pencils? I recently purchased a few brands to try them out. Watch my colored pencil comparison of the “Crayola Dual-Ended Colored Pencils”, “Faber-Castell Bi-Color Pencils”, and the “Chameleon Color Tones Colored Pencils.”
In this video I swatch and blend each of these pencils to see how they perform, and how the overall concept of the pairing of the colors works. Do they make a good set? Should you buy them? Are double-ended pencils a good value compared to full-length pencils like Prismacolor Premier colored pencils?

I think the USP of double-ended pencils is the space saving aspect. Kids have limited pencil case space in their school bag and these give them 36 colours in the footprint of 18 pencils
@ColoringBliss

Agreed on that for sure. Plus I think kids would enjoy the novelty of double ended pencils. And how often do kids actually use up a full set of their school pencils?!

I own the Chameleon pencils and like them, they blend well, are creamy and the color selection is ok. I purchased them to put in my coloring grab and take bag (for emergency trips to hospital waiting rooms, or Doctor offices). They work out very well because of space. I have two sets of markers, gel pens and colored pencils. A couple of books, board to color on and all the necessary items needed, all in one planner bag! Thanks for the review!

The company that owns Cretacolor also owns another Austrian colored pencil company, Jolly, that also makes a double-ended colored pencil. Jolly is a brand that focuses on kids (they claim their pencils/leads are nearly indestructible). I actually really love their pencils, but I know that not everyone would. Their pencils are called Supersticks, and they have a 3.8 core and a large 8mm barrel. They are very pigmented and very easily blendable, BUT they aren’t exactly ‘creamy’. They aren’t scratchy either. It’s more of a dry feeling, which I actually prefer. I enjoy the tactile friction feeling of a pencil on a good toothed paper over the slick ‘mushy’ feeling of a Prismacolor. I feel like I have more control and can do tiny details more easily. But that’s just my personal preference, lol. Anyway, I enjoy their double-ended pencils. Most of the are light/dark tone pairings.

I know this was a year ago, don't know how I missed seeing it! I am glad you gave a positive report about the Chameleon pencils, as some other colorists have been very negative about them, which surprised me, as I bought them two years ago through a mail order catalogue that I subscribe to, and loved them from the minute I opened the box. Everything about them appealed to me, and when I used them, I loved them even more🙂 Yep, pros and cons, half the length of standard pencils, as well as the others you listed, but that is the choice you make when you buy them.

When you showed where the color names are on the pencils I thought of my color blind grandson. He likes to color, but in order to color independently he needs the color name. Most pencils for children don't have a color name, or it will be quickly sharpened away. Thinking about this as a set for children, they usually aren't taught about shading and blending, that is a more advanced skill. I think if I were color blind having disparate colors in one pencil would facilitate choosing which end to use.

@Coloring Bliss This video was right on time for me. I just got a set of the Chameleons. I really like them so far, they are creamy with vibrant colors. The configuration in which they come make it even better. It's so portable, I can bring them wherever I go and it gives me a kind of board to color on. I saw a similar set of pencils by Jolly supersticks premium double ended pencils. This was a great video but I was hoping to see how they compare to the Chameleons, and have been curious about their pencils in general. If I ever run out of pencils, maybe I can replace them with those.

Well, you did your public service for the day!! I've had an eye on the Chameleon pencils - not as a "need to" but just as a "want to" - for ages. However, the price has always kept them out of range as additions to the "toy box" - generally, I tend to save my lunch money for working-type goodies like the new Luminance, you know? But at $20, I couldn't resist - that's half the MSRP! Thanks to you, I snapped them up before the price could go back up - and thanks to your review, with decent confidence in the product! 100 plus marks on your Lifetime Good Deeds chart - and many, many thanks!

There was another pencil set that was doubled. Peta Hewitt reviewed them. I think they were called Colleen or something like that. They solved the half a pencil issue by being chunky and having a thicker lead than normal. Not sure if they are still out there but Peta seemed to think they were pretty decent. I do think that there IS a method to Faber Castelle's combinations. I think that they assume that you would use one end of the pencil and would want to keep it up while you use another color so as not to lose track. So instead of having to flip the pencil you just put it down, grab another color and color with it and then switch. Or because they are student grade they are pairing a more and less popular color so that everyone gets a chance? Anyway, thank you for the review. I really miss the live broadcasts.

I haven't tried the double ones, but I wasn't impressed with the red box Faber Castell pencils. They're made in Brazil, Crayolas are made in Brazil by Faber, so I thought they'd be identical (this is why the sharpener was F-C). I actually think the Crayola ones are a little better. The set of 100 is easy to find cheaper than the double ended ones, and the 120 is just a little more.

There is one point I disagree. There is no "forced pairing". No one would watch you that you blend the two ends. You can still choose an other pencil to blend together instead of flipping. I have double ended pencils (red and blue office pencils) and there is one huge downside: when it gets shorter the other end is hurting your hand while sharpening. And for kids there is always the accident-factor (sharp pencil vs eye). But when the pairing is like Faber-Castell, you can give one set to more kids at the same time (less arguing because there are more yellow/green/red/etc available) but adult supervision is recommended. (I had to use a double ended pencil for school in 1st grade, it was mandatory and my parents hated it, so they switched it with individual blue and red as soon as they found the required brand)

I have the chameleon colour tones, they colour and blend and layer very nicely. I mostly use for travel, but some are getting smaller and the other colour on other end sticks into my hand. I’m going to saw in half and use my extenders, then not really practical then for travel. If they sold the 50 colours in a full size pencil set I’d buy that. But won’t buy this set again.

Um... I think it's only the Chameleon's that are marketed as "blending pairs". The original selling point for the double-ended colored pencils back in the day was compactness-- and the novelty factor-- not perfectly selected color values in a single pencil. It's not really fair to ding the manufacturer for not doing something they don't claim to. Just sayin', not hatin'. For my purposes, neither the double-ended feature nor the blending pairs add much value to a colored pencil. I color for my own pleasure, and my own color sense is adequate for that. Sometimes I'm not pleased with how a color combination works, but I consider that a learning experience. Again, just sayin'. YMMV.

@@ColoringBliss The only reason I would buy these would be for travel for my granddaughters. The thing is that they are 8 and 5 and are very good artist. I used to be. My daughter is a wonderful artist and designer. They really took after their mom. I am absolutely amazed at their drawings and colorings with their colored pencils and gell pens. They would tell me their are not enough colors. They already have a few hundred color pencils and at least 4 sets of Gel pens. They now use grandmas also but they really know how to appreciate the pens and pencils and not to damage them. They are so proud of their art work. My oldest granddaughter has her art teacher for her classroom teacher and she tells me what an amazing artist she is. Even my 5 year old amazes me. I tell them wow you can draw better than grandma now. When I was their age I drew charcoal art and did watercolor paintings and entered them in art contest and got first and 2nd places. It was a blast. Their mother could have been a designer and was accepted to a prestigious designer school that is very hard to get into just off her sketches she drew in a history class we were taking at the college when she was in high-school. We met a designer who told us that my daughter was an amazing artist and that it was a big deal to be excepted like she was. But, she decided to get married and have children instead. She said she is not sorry. She loves her kids. Maybe someday.
