@michelesummers2437- Interesting you thought it was sublime. I would bet my home that you are not a regular golfer or you would see the fallacy in your statement. From the story standpoint I might agree. From a reality standpoint it is absolutely ludicrous and absurd! I played golf for over 30 years and I will tell you that NO ONE rides in a golf cart without a bag of clubs, extra tees, balls, towel, etc. The only golf played with one club is miniature golf! They really should have portrayed him as a real golfer, and not some hacker trying to use one club. Looks like his only club is a mid iron and you can't putt with a mid iron. Well, I suppose you could, but you would look more like one of The Three Stooges if you did. Disappointing scene in a great series! A wasted scene for a brilliant actor!

Your appreciation of Columbo is so fantastic. My sister and I have always felt like we're the youngest Columbo fans (I'm 29 and she's 24) after our dad got us hooked on it as it was one of his favorite shows. So I hadn't seen this one and when this review came up I stopped and jumped over to Peacock to watch the episode real quick. HOLY SHIT! I also love Robert Culp in Columbo and oh my god he was amazing here! That driving scene was incredible, I was legit mad when Columbo didn't get him. That gotcha as soon as the camera flash when Columbo catches him I said "Yeah! Got that little shit!"

As always, well done! Culp is on the Mount Rushmore of Columbo suspects! Here he builds to a slow burn, staring the detective down and handing out passive aggressive compliments. This turns to hostility and the "can't win 'em all" line--which is one of the best in the the entire show. Also: the end can be used as a filmmaking lesson. When Kepel asks to see the photo, you could insert any pic and hilarity would ensue! Columbo as mime? Dressed as clown? A Dracula costume? Cut back to Culp losing it. Proof of the power of the cut! Thanks for all of your work and bravo on the end montage. It was uh...killer! ;-)

@galloway8052 I agree with your choices and nominate Nimoy! We know from Spock that he could play intelligent and intense, but he was so arrogant and stylish in the part. And evil. I loved how he got under Columbo's skin and provoked that water pitcher slamming outburst! ;-)

As fun as this episode was, there are so many things that don't ring true. 1. I can't imagine someone like Culp's character would keep the calibration converter in his office and not get rid of it as it's the only possible hard evidence he could have been nailed with. 2. Why wouldn't any of the cops thought of the possibility of a calibration converter? 3. Columbo telling his photographer "I'm not searching, I'm looking" won't help him when the defense presents photos that sure look like he's searching. Plus the fact he used his badge to gain access to the office but with no warrant. 4. But why couldn't he have gotten a warrant based on the circumstantial stuff?
@ravenwilder4099
@ravenwilder4099 Жыл бұрын
While laws on this can be varied and complicated, so long as Columbo never claimed to have a warrant, just said "I'm a cop" and asked to go inside, then I don't think there would be a problem. You don't need a warrant if someone voluntarily lets you come inside.

Loved your review and loved this episode. The part at the golf course was great when columbo finally accused him of murder. But as with all columbos, the interaction between him and the murderer is always the best part. Culp was of course super and thats why they had him 3X. He was great as one of the murderers dad in Columbo goes to college. I would have loved to have seen him do maybe at least 1 more as the killer like they did with Patrick Mcgoohan in 1998.

One of my favorite scenes from this episode is when Columbo interviews Mrs. Norris. She gives him her whereabouts at the time of the crime and notes that she doesn’t have an “alibi.” Love how Columbo believes her using his wife’s no-head for crime as likely coming up with a better alibi than Mrs. Norris.

if i have a problem with columbo it's probably that the episodes don't feel as round because of columbo's finale gotcha! moment, because it often feels a bit out of context and has nothing to do with the whole building of the murder that we experienced at the beginning of that episode. But with "double exposure" it's different, because the killer is beaten with his own methods and every detail in the film spills over into the next! So one of my absolute favorite episodes.

I have noticed Robert Culp's plasticity and his deal in his given role. He's the murderer in my favorite episodes. But there is another "blackmailer" who bites the dust, and that is the nurse to Mr. Spock in "A Stitch in Crime" She knew about the dissolving suture... Which, in a roundabout way, lead to her death in the parking garage, due to her potential force of blackmail....Just like you mentioned about Ms. LeSanka. Thanks for your insight about the many lessons to be learned from Lieutenant Columbo.. You are totally right about this shit! Well... Maybe a little gray area, but thanks for keeping "The Leftenant" where he ought to be. ("Dagger of the Mind" another fav)

One of my favourite TV episodes ever in any genre. Phillip K Dick could have written the treatment for this story, it's in that arena of psychological /technological manipulation with a head-spinning payoff. Not only that it's also got some common themes with The Prisoner,(albeit a lot subtler) and shows us the common dramatic instincts that must have underpinned the Falk/McGoohan friendship. Both of these guys had the ability to place highly original and sometimes (like this episode) even subversive ideas smack in the middle of Primetime TV. There can be no greater praise for any artist in any medium .Thanks for this post!

Another brush with Columbo and golf. He tees off a beauty in DEATH LENDS AN HAND, then makes a point of reading a golf magazine in EXERCISE IN FATALITY, all the while concealing or obfuscating his obvious interest. I haven't seen this episode in a while - are there any additional hints that Columbo is a natural on the golf course course? Does he have, say, a telltale dexterity with the golf cart?

As good as this episode is, I just can't appreciate the gotcha. It's beyond contrived that Keppel would keep the caliber converter in his office when he had plenty of opportunities to sneak it out and dispose of it. With how meticulous the murder itself was, it makes no sense for the killer to get complacent when it comes to erasing the last piece of evidence that could tie him to the crime.

This episode was almost a masterpiece, but I personally feel that they tried to cram too much into a hour and fifteen minutes. Between the Subliminal Cut, the Calibration Converter, his alibi with the voice over and trying to frame Tanya Baker, and the two rolls of film, it’s almost overwhelming and I don’t feel they had time to explore those things as much as I would have liked. Still, a very good episode.
