I literally just watched it. It deserves the criticism. It’s an incompetent movie. Bad acting, writing, editing, score and is an absolute chore to watch. Off screen kills. Incredibly stupid ending.

I watched this to make sure i understood it correctly. The transcript part confused me but im pretty solid on the key gotcha. Although I'm still a bit confused how greenleaf came into possession of the key to the lock that columbo installed.

Bill McKinney??? Not a good actor??? Dude.... he was the KING of B-movies. He was in Deliverance, Cannonball, Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, First Blood, The Green Mile and countless dozens of TV appearances. We could all be so lucky as to be such a "poor" actor as Mr. McKinney.

The deputy commissioner was an administrator. He was not a seasoned detective. Tt is why the deputy commissioner made so many mistakes.😊

The Deputy commissioner was originally shown to be in a Bell Jetranger helicopter when flying over the city, but when it came time to jump out into the pool the helicopter had changed to a McDonnell Douglas MD 500.

Sgt. Wilson only showed up in one other episode, “Now You See Him,” again as a bumbler who followed every false clue, but with his knowledge of gadgets (in this case, a newer style of typewriter) bringing Columbo to a breakthrough that our hero probably never would’ve figured out on his own. I liked the character, and wished they’d one more with him - obviously not every episode, but maybe one appearance per season would’ve been nice. It was fun in his second appearance, when Jack Cassidy condescendingly called him “Dr. Watson,” but Wilson also got to be there to confront Cassidy at the end over the typewriter business.

It was clever how they could turn the Columbo format, in which we see the murder and the person who committed it, into a whodunnit with the twins gimmick. (And since this is a Columbo format, we all should’ve seen the answer coming a mile away.)

That clip of Cassavetes, Falk, and Gazzara on with Dick Cavett also reminded me of the infamous interview that Tom Snyder did with Kiss. Ace Frehley was drunk out of his mind for the whole interview, to which Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley just felt incredibly annoyed the whole time - but Snyder was clearly being entertained.

Interesting that Peter Falk told the Johnny Carson audience that they might not know Donald Pleasance, but he’s one of the best actors in England. Pleasance was in “The Great Escape,” “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” and “You Only Live Twice.” American audiences surely would’ve remembered him from at least those movies.

(1) The murderer, being a retired USMC officer and a seasoned man of the seas should have known how to ensure that the victim's body never surfaced. (2) Suzanne was so lovely.

NYPD's slogan is that they have "the finest police force on the planet". Based on the apartment recently rented by Columbo that's shown in this episode, LAPD's slogan might well be "the poorest police force in the galaxy".

Margaret provided an interesting contrast with Columbo. They both could tell that Leslie did it, seeing through the hoax she pulled on the FBI. But Margaret was a hothead going after Leslie (for all the obvious reasons of her character) and prone to sloppy mistakes that Leslie could handle, while Columbo knew this had to be done with finesse.

All the characters in this episode were so utterly ruthless and emotionally strung out, it didn’t even occur to me that Shirley was in some way weird or creepy. (Would ‘70s audiences have recognized a genuine coding that she had a crush on Vivica?)

What I loved about the moment where Columbo lost his cool with Mayfield: For a moment he’s dropping his whole pose of being disheveled and confused, but instead showing his adversary the totally serious and rational detective that he really is. It’s a special moment, to be done very sparingly.

What a fantastic review and analysis of one of my favorite Columbo episodes. A Friend in Deed is definitely one of the best in the series. Great call out of how Columbo puts his career on the line with grim determination. Bravo!

Great review of my favorite Columbo episode! When I first saw "Swan Song" I became an instant Cash fan, although l don't even like country music all that much 😉 However, I have to mention one thing: our perception of what qualifies as evil, has clearly changed since the 1970s - and frankly I cannot get worked up too much about the fact that Tommy Brown had sex with a 16 years old girl. Hey, that was what rock stars did back then, when the groupie phenomenon was in full swing. And these groupies were VERY persistent. I would not be surprised at all if Johnny Cash himself had enjoyed these girls now and then! He was no saint. The scene, when all these young girls try to storm Tommy Brown's dressing room, is quite realistic and I don't even think that bedding a 16 years old girl - if she was a willing participant - was a crime everywhere in the US at the time. In Germany, where I come from, such behavior may be frowned upon - rightfully so l might add - but it never was and still isn't a crime. If the teenager is younger than 16 it's a different story, and I think that the scriptwriters choose 16 as Mary-Ann's age in order to make Tommy not looking too bad. However, guess what's really pretty evil? Killing your teenage lover in cold blood! We may feel that Edna, the bible-spoutin' hypocrite, who used poor Mary-Ann for blackmailing her husband, got what she deserved. But killing Mary-Ann without the slightest sign of remorse and replacing her with another background singer one week BEFORE her death, makes Tommy Brown a pretty bad guy - at least in my book. Even the great Columbo himself neglects to investigate if Tommy had a motive for killing Mary-Ann. The scriptwriters just used her for showing off Columbo's musical prowess - and then everybody forgets about poor Mary-Ann, and nobody mourns her. Columbo must've been blinded by Tommy Brown's stardom, when he said his sentence about him being not bad through and through because he could sing so well! This last scene was really moving because of the great chemistry between Columbo and Tommy Brown. But the actual plot tells a different story: Tommy Brown was a bad guy, and there were no hints that he would've confessed any time soon, if Columbo hadn't caught him with that parachute!
