Today’s video is an epic, so sit back and enjoy 7 minutes’ worth of Castle thrash! GWR Castle classes 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and 7029 Clun Castle were hauling the doubly named 'Castle Centenarian' and 'Welsh Marches Express' tour from Tyseley on a circular tour to Hereford via Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and the Welsh Marches, then returning via Newport, Gloucester and the Lickey Incline! This tour has seen many alterations done to its route and strikes so it was good to finally see it go ahead. It’s 100 years since the design of these awesome locomotives, and 5043 is my favourite so this was a highly enjoyable day. This run was also historically significant as it's 5043's first assault of the Lickey.
I started out at 07:50 from my local, grabbing a TfW service out of Birmingham up to Wolverhampton, and cycling up to Codsall. I set up there, unfortunately some people further down the platform obscured the view, a 196 rolled in and drowned out the sound, and the sun bleached the quality, so this really wasn't what it could have been despite the Castles' great performance. The Castles were also looking absolutely beautiful. I then caught a service over to Shifnal and set up there, once again the sun was causing me a lot of hassle. Although I got a good shot, the Castles seemed to be taking it easy and I also missed my Birmingham bound service because they were 14 late.
After this I headed back to Birmingham, changing and heading into Barnt Green, from where I cycled out to Vigo Bridge on the Lickey Incline, the steepest gradient on the mainline in Britain, a sustained 2 miles of 1/37 rise. I arrived there at 1pm, with nearly 5 hours' wait in store I did some work and enjoyed the company of ‪@harnettyrailways‬, ‪@blackcountrysteamvideos8021‬, ‪@WestCountrySteamVideos‬, ‪@LiamsLocos‬, ‪@LukeAlfordUKsteam‬, ‪@FlatCapJack52‬ and @jamieleestransporthub! The castles came thrashing up, I could hear them as far away as Stoke Works Jn and passing through Bromsgrove!! Thankfully the 47 was doing nothing, and with a recently wetted railhead, the castles' job was by no means easy, an equivalent load of 14 coaches!! They handled it very well, with 5043 appearing to be doing the lion's share of their assault on the 1 in 37 incline. This was amazing and I'll never forget the incredible noise of the Castle bark but soon after we were drenched in a thunderstorm lol.
The weather was strange today, up to 28* recorded with clear blue skies the whole day, although it became stormy a couple of hours before the castles' arrival. Thanks to Vintage trains, NR, everyone I met and to the drivers of the trains for putting up with our antics as we waited. Thanks particularly to the Castles and their crew, today won't have been easy! Also a massive thanks to whoever decided not to use the 47 - good decision!
I hope you enjoy as I did!

I think 7029 was doing her share; the colour of the exhaust is a matter of when fresh coal was added, and perhaps 5043 had added more recently. Anyway, super video; a castle won't let you down, steady as she goes but she will get there

I was on the train. We were disappointed to see the diesel attached to the back at New St. This had not been in the original plan but mandated by Network Rail because the lineside fire risk had been increased to Amber status. I spoke to one of the drivers at Hereford who was hoping to clear the Lickey at 40mph with the diesel as dead weight. This, he explained, assumed a dry run at the foot and on the climb. In the event we went through torrential rain and only managed to get to 54mph at the foot of the Bank. The castles cleared the top at 18.5mph we were told which was a bit sweaty. The diesel did not work at all on the bank or just before (I do not know whether the diesel worked earlier in the journey as I was 2 coaches behind the engines). The potential killer was the really wet track - but they managed it. It was a great trip.

I hope you enjoyed your trip, it looked like an amazing one! I too was disappointed to see the 47 in the consist but I had heard the reason for it. I imagine in good weather that the crew's estimate would have been more than attainable, but I think given the wet conditions, the dead weight of the 47 and the slow run at the bank, the two Castles put on an absolutely incredible performance. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip and the video! Regards, Dan

I've always wondered about a certain thing during this video. So these 2 are castle classes from the GWR. Both identical locomotives. So if both of them are working hard up the Lickey Incline, why do their exhaust beats fall out of sync with each other? I can't detect any slippage from the video. So why would this happen?
@crunchynutsteamfilms5043
@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 2 ай бұрын
Probably showing a lot of ignorance here but I must confess I don't know lol. I assume that their exhaust beats being closer/further away from the camera would have an effect, as well as the fact that Clun Castle wasn't providing as much power as 5043 but there will be a reason. I'm sure a crew member would be able to clarify. Regards, Dan

Up the Lickey with three locos including a 2,500hp diesel, and two Castles with roughly 1500hp each. Totally pointless. That power would have been more useful for a high speed run on the level at 100mph plus !!!! Also rather dangerous having a 120ton diesel swinging along on the rear (when not powering) as this weight will try & derail the much lighter coaches in the curves. Which is why it was banned in BR days !!! Would I a Railway Engineer buy a ticket for such a dangerous day out ? Not on your life !
@crunchynutsteamfilms5043
@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I'm sure that any railway engineer would know that rigorous risk assessments are carried out for this type of thing, and I do have to question the physics of your assessment as I'm afraid I have yet to have heard any incidence of a diesel swinging and derailing coaches, especially as this tour performed a 250 mile round trip without fault, and railtours are often run in this format. This practice was not banned in BR service as it rarely happened, and similar activities (like running up the Lickey banked by 4 94xx panniers, a combined weight of 224 tonnes) were also not banned and you can still find videos of that occurring. I also think that a 100mph run with two castles would be significantly more dangerous than anything which is shown here. I personally have bought many such tickets as I very much enjoy travelling on railtours like these and I shall continue to do so - I, like most others, consider these tours far less risky to life than many other things, especially given that the number of fatal railtour accidents in preservation amounts to 0. I do hope you enjoyed the video. Regards, Dan

@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 "Rigorous risk assessments" as you call it, by the Post BR farcical "Franchise network", is of course one of the ridiculous issues of this method of trying to run a national network Otherwise why did these idiots (Civil Servants) BIN the British Railways rule book, which was written in over 100 years of Blood. (Virtually every rule was a result of train crashes resulting in deaths). The idiot Franchise method results in gross stupidity, for the simple reason that this "Franchise" system had no choice but to also abolish "Railway Vertical integration". In other words, the current methods are a fractured multi headed chicken. Hence the "Politically inspired" pseudo safety methods currently used. It also means Britain has virtually the most expensive ticketing in the World, & worse allows European Nationalised Railways (DB - Deutsch Bundesbahn being the best example), who's profits go back into the German network, at the expense of the British Taxpayer !!!! If you put a heavy load at the rear of a train, of lighter intermediate vehicles (coaches in this case). Which was banned in BR days due to the laws of Physics. Which clearly indicate that in a curve, the extraordinary weight at the rear (if not powering), will try and shorten the curve by derailing lighter vehicles in between. Indeed this problem also prevented BR from having canted track of more than 6 inches, although on the Continent 9 inches is the maximum !!!! I began my railway career back in the 1970's as the RH&DR Shed Master, in charge of their fleet of steam locos. I have since worked for a number of railways around the World, including the New Zealand Government Railways & three Japanese Railways in addition to BR. In numerous departments including Railway Safety, mechanical engineering, signalling, Accountancy, & even Corporate Economics. Indeed I have just retired as the CME in charge of an overseas railway Museums fleet !!!
