A year of my life in 16 minutes! From hospital to recovery, this is about undergoing and recovering from my bilateral hip surgery. I've seen very little out there about this surgery from a patient's viewpoint, so I thought I would make a video about my experience of getting both hips replaced for anyone considering it.

Thank you Sir...for this extremely helpful video. It was the most hilarious one I have seen too !! I'm in need of the same bilateral operation, like ten years ago and did not know that both could be done at the same time !! Being all alone, I don't know how I will be able to handle it... Thank you so much for taking the time and effort 🙏🏼

Hi Jackie, thanks for the nice comments! Good luck with your surgery, you're about to become a member of an exclusive club 🙂 If I had one bit of advice to give, it would be to remember to do your physio exercises regularly and keep as mobile and active as possible, which will take a bit of willpower sometimes. You don't make good progress by just sitting around.

Hi Bob, very much enjoyed your video which was professional and covered most of my questions. I live in London Ontario and scheduled for a double hip replacement, soon I hope! There is a backlog of patients due to the pandemic, but all the problems you talked about pre-surgery are what I’m experiencing, so nice to have a real person like you review all the issues I can expect. So thanks - your sense of humour is just what I need!

Excellent video, very informative and you obviously have a great sense of humour. I had a bilateral hip replacement on 21 July 2021, and like yourself I decided to go private, the NHS was not an option to me due to the long waiting list. My surgeon was Winston Kim at the Spire hospital in south Manchester. Like your surgeon, he was excellent. I had the Mako robotic arm assisted hip surgery. I did not realise at the time a double hip replacement in one go was relatively rare, the nursing staff said that i needed to tick quite a few boxes to have the procedure. I have just turned 65 years of age and after 4 months feel so much better.

I have seen horror stories on here mainly about the excruciating pain others have suffered but you appear to have experienced the opposite. Due to work commitments I'm hoping to be back behind the wheel btw 4 to 6 weeks just hope that works out OK. I'm up in Yorkshire and hope my surgeon is has good as yours. Thank you very much for sharing your experience.

Thank you for your kind comment! It's odd how few videos there are of the patient experience, as opposed to surgeons (mainly American) advertising their hip surgery services. I reckon 4-6 weeks to be able to drive is about right if all goes well. My one big tip to anyone about to undergo this surgery is this: do the physio as advised after surgery, then do as much regular exercise as possible after. My personal favourite is doing spin classes at the gym. I also took course with a personal trainer to concentrate on stretching and strength exercises. Re pain: I can only describe my own experience which was that the pain management was excellent, and I can honestly say I had no pain at all, right from waking up after the operation through to full recovery months later. Good luck with your operation!

Thank you so much for making this vlog. I’m also in the south of England and, at 55, have been advised that I need both hips replaced soon due to long term effects of hip dysplasia. My surgeon does 2 bilaterals a month using a posterolateral approach and OPS system. He’s given me the choice of simultaneous replacements or staged 3 months apart. As I usually have up to 4 months off work over the winter I thought the simultaneous op would give me a better chance of getting back to work next summer (I have a very active outdoor job). Also, my "good" left hip has a habit of giving out on me so I'm not sure i would want to rely on it if I have the right one done first. There's just so little information out there to make the decision on though. So, again, thank you so much for this video and I hope you continue to go from strength to strength.
@BobOsola

Thanks for kind words! I would still do both together again if I had to go back in time. I have found that the more you get back into shape, the better you feel - exercise is key once you have finished physio, which only really gets you back to basics. It is a long road to full recovery though: you can walk and live very well after a few months, but it took me about year to feel 100% fit and confident to do strenuous activities - like mountain biking - and forget I ever had an operation.

Hi Bob - I really enjoyed your video as I had literal hip surgery (performed by Jeremy Latham) almost 4 years ago. What I will say is that it will get better and stronger as long as you stay active. I never now give my hips a thought. Last week I actually skied for the first time and it was amazing as there was no pain and the additional mobility meant that I was skiing better than before...even off-piste. I think Jeremy is posting a video I sent him.

@BobOsola Жыл бұрын
On the whole I'm pleased I had both done together but you do need more help/care in the first few weeks afterwards. The big appeal for me was only one operation to face. But some hospitals here won't even offer it due to the potential higher anaesthetic risk and the fact it takes up twice the operating theatre time and resources. So it's not a black and white decision, even assuming you are physically eligible for a bilateral surgery.

@BobOsola Жыл бұрын
@@michellewong513 Michell, I can honestly say my post-op pain was zero. I really mean totally zero. If you get any pain then your meds are not being managed correctly and you should speak up immediately. Re dislocation, you just have to avoid trips and falls. Wear grippy shoes and take no chances. Use shower mats, handrails etc. wherever you can. You soon get past that initial risky stage. Good luck!

Hi Bob.. just wanted to say thank you for sharing your experience of double hip replacement. I’m due for mine on 29 Jan 23. I’ve been in so much pain, I just can’t wait to have mine done. Which way did they go in with yours? I heard anterior was the best way? (What do I know!)… I got my lovely new loo seat and some crutches.. wonder should I get a Zimmer frame thing? Was that helpful? I’m (only) 62…lol and wasn’t expecting to need both hips done just yet… plus having to use all my savings :(… oh well, your health is your wealth so they say! Last question… do you know what caused your infection at all? I really want to try and avoid this if poss… thanks so much again. You have really helped me…Caroline
@BobOsola
@BobOsola Жыл бұрын
Hi Caroline, mine was posterior, but opinions on which is "better" seem to vary considerably among surgeons. I found I didn't need a Zimmer frame at all, but my hospital had one standing by for me just in case. Your hospital physio should assess your needs for the right support equipment before they send you home. Mine ensured I could walk OK and get up and down stairs on crutches before they released me. Re infection: the chances of getting one are incredibly low, usually well under 2% of surgeries. I just happened to be unlucky that day. Thanks for your kind comments and best of luck with your surgery!

@BobOsola
@BobOsola 9 ай бұрын
@@uklondon20231 Yes, my joint stiffness went away immediately after the operation, but it is quite a long recovery to full fitness, especially if you get both hips done at once. I had to do quite a lot of physio and gym work to get myself back to where I wanted to be. Just last week I did a 27 mile bike ride, so I feel that I am pretty much fully recovered, with no pain at all and good hip flexibility. But if you just sit around afterwards you won't make much progress. The only symptom I get now is that my hips are sometimes a bit stiff for a few minutes when I stand up after sitting down for a long period, but that may just be my age :-)

Depending on the patient I would consider MIS using the anterior approach to the hip. Scar is about 3 inches. You need to find a surgeon with a lot of successful relevant experience. It’s worth doing your research before major surgery.

I just had a THR on the right leg. I thought that I had planned out my recovery well in advance. Made my room into a hospital bed. Couple things to say. It hurts like nothing I’ve ever felt. I had a spinal anesthesia and general. Ask for it! It blocks all nerves from waist down. It’s weird to wake up feeling as though you’re paralyzed. It wore off slowly. Took some selfies while lying there. Fun fun. Then all the anesthetic meds stopped working. I spiked a fever in the hospital. Then did a selfie with a cold cloth on my 102 degree head. Not so much fun anymore. The pain is excruciating. I’ve had an intestinal blockage that didn’t hurt this much. I’m not tryna to turn folks away from arthroplasty. Just know that it is major surgery and terrifically jarring to the body. All that sawing and hammering involved in the procedure is taxing. Give yourself the time and space to heal from this. I’d be the one tryna push it at the gym on a stationary bike too. Aw man. ✌ and ❤
