@@HH-gv8mx Wow! That doesn’t make any sense. You should be able to decide on your own and it shouldn’t be held against you. To me, it really borders on discrimination, and I’m so sorry you had to deal with that. I work in People Services (HR) as a Senior Recruiter, and that is a “no-no”. We can’t judge or not hire anyone based on their appearance. It should be about your skillset because how you look isn’t going to get the job done. When I confirm my interviews, I just say dress appropriately. I say that because that looks different for everyone. We need to go back to just viewing the person and what’s inside. You can be pretty on the outside and ugly on the inside. SMH! It’s ridiculous! I don’t even know how to apply makeup and don’t own any. I wear MAC clear lipglass and have a few tubes of lipstick that I don’t wear, but if my job ever told me to wear makeup, I would look at them like they were crazy. I did have a female manager say to me once, you are so pretty why don’t you wear makeup? My response was, well if I’m so pretty, why do I need it? She never mentioned it again. If you don’t like makeup, I say don’t wear it. There isn’t anything wrong with wearing it, but it’s a persons personal preference and not their job.

The old Asian lady that ran it of course and true old lady fashion did say LOL "this is beauty store you no look beautiful" at the time it was a mixture of funny and infuriating but looking back and thinking about this conversation as well it's true. Especially since I have been a trainer for 14 years in some industries it is very important that you look the part of the industry and that you work. You don't want to go to Sephora and see people with no makeup and you similarly wouldn't want to see a trainer who is obese. So on the one hand while it is a horrible double standard I can see both sides of it

I would really appreciate if they had discussed more here about how potentially Whoppi’s status in fame etc is affording her to be respected and well received enough to be able to appear on television as a woman without glam. They barely scratched the surface of this really important conversation. Would any of the other women at the table even be there if they didn’t have glam? They all (except for Whoppi) giggled and joked about how they’d “scare” people if they didn’t have it. To me seems like that’s the problem there- the way we all have internalized accepted and bent our lives around our appearance in public as women just to be able to be included “at the table”
@chachabunny123ut3 ай бұрын
Exactly! The woman interviewing for the vice president position was most likely criticized because the company she interviewed for has an appearance to uphold that includes media, photos, large meetings, etc. it is possible that she doesn’t have the seniority, recognizability, etc to be able to present without makeup. She may have looked washed out and not put together. A lot of those bigger positions are public facing and require media training and appearance. Also, I doubt any of the other women at the table besides Whoopi would be there without a signature look

You need a checkmark ✅ on all three of those things to get hired. Again, this has no bearing on gender.

Makeup should not be part of dressing for the job you want though -- that can be accomplished through a tidy appearance (ie bathing and brushing your hair) and appropriate attire. The fact that women feel so pressured to mask their natural features is appalling. I only wear mascara, simply because I'm very fair and blonde and so you can't see my lashes otherwise. I look great with a bare face and no one is going to convince me that putting clown makeup on is doing anyone a favor.

Does makeup make some ladies more attractive?? Yes but what if you feel more comfortable without it. A good character is all we need on the job .

I am a very attractive woman, and I actually look better without make up on. And I’m lucky that I don’t have to wear it. But I will never forget my first job when I moved here to South Florida working for Resort&spa in Palm Beach, my boss came up to me and told me to go put make up on. I instantly miss living on the West Coast. But now everyone is so fake anyway with their fake eyelashes and fake hair. Yes I think it’s a standard for women. And they are expected to have a certain to get ahead and to get hired.

As a guy, you have to make sure you are shaved and trimmed. Also locks are viewed as "unprofessional" for some reason
@rahelkamber48393 ай бұрын
the reason is internalized racism. there is nothing unprofessional about locks. but there is a lot that's unprofessional about white people.
@javiruiz83653 ай бұрын
Exactly!!! It’s kinda the same! I had a YT coworker with long hair and was asked to cut his hair! Locks do look unprofessional depending on the job and maintenance
@kansasgoldilocks3 ай бұрын
I guess it depends on your industry. I've worked in higher education, non-profit, and a zoological facility. No one has ever cared about things like whether a guy is shaved or if a woman is wearing makeup.

When talking about make up, the same could be said for jewellery and hair styling. The woman in the video said she got a blow out but didn't wear any makeup. Alternatively she could have worn a little make up (concealer, mascara and lipstick) and put her hair in a ponytail. Did she wear jewellery of none? The point is, dress for the role you want, that includes grooming. Once you have the job then you can phase out hair, make up, and or jewellery. Make no effort? That sends a bad sign.

Actually, Whoopi we r used to, she has improved in her way of dressing coming to work. I can say a face is easier to look at when it looks like you have put a bit of effort. She says she has no time, a little bit of powder and some color on her none existent eyebrows, doesn’t take no time.

I don’t know what professional place of work would require anyone wearing makeup to work unless you’re a sex worker or wannabe actress. I do agree with Sonny that hair, particularly black hair that is a problem in work settings. Racism

I do view the photograph of Joy's younger self in this video as a passable,great,style. What we, the general public,feels is OK and what the powers that be that are the bonifide rulers of the 'Job Market' see is OK is two different things.

Whoopi you go girl… I’m many decades old and I have not worn makeup about 3 decades. I feel some people need it more (for whatever reason). As for me except me for who I am or you go about your business.

I saw that video last night! It didn't seem right, but I wasn't surprised. I think everyone should stop wearing makeup and learn to love themselves the way they are. I think the world would be a better place. I wore a little makeup my entire working life, but as soon as I retired, I quit spending $240 dollars for my hair every 6 weeks; and I quit wearing make up. I was aging and I needed to get used to my real self. I'm not self conscience anymore. It's a great feeling to feel good in your own skin. The people around me are used to my real self. It's a life changer for the better. To all the plastic women out there, do yourself a favor and stop.

I'm not sure it's a double-standard. Studies show that for both men and women, sometimes the person deemed attractive has a leg up in a job search. It could also be things like make-up, hair style, style of suit, type of shave or facial hair, especially a front-facing role or one where you might have to go out an represent the company. This is probably a special case because it's about make-up specifically. I'm not sure how often this happens at the average job. One other thing I will say is, a lot of these jobs turn down people who would perfectly fit the role for really no good reason

2nd attempt at this comment: It does make a difference. Make up makes the wearer feel mors calmly professional at work. It creates the uniformity amongst females that says the Company and Employees all make an effort. It creates that quiet contemplation time pre work when you focus on putting your best self into the role and it is also a nice way to download away from work upon arriving home, similar to taking off a uniform. 👄 Theresa 🙋♀️☯️
